HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 27 December 2015 15:31 (eight years ago) link

that paragraph DOES clearly appear in a list of things mentioned in the lyrics and it almost seems like you'd have to be willfully taking it out of context to make it look "weird." and it's an excerpt from an already published book so any critique of it doesn't really need to be laid at pitchfork's feet itt anyway.

i got a really big steen, and they need some really big zings (some dude), Monday, 28 December 2015 00:51 (eight years ago) link

true, maybe this is the wrong thread - saw the book recommended but was a bit disappointed after reading this excerpt, quoted part sounds like a faux naive rapgenius annotation to me, but probably I just don't share the author's humour

still, what's with the 1-13 list at the end?

niels, Monday, 28 December 2015 08:38 (eight years ago) link

i'm disproportionately annoyed that this post about covering D'Angelo doesn't mention that "She's Always in My Hair" is a Prince song, making it a cover of a cover.

Animal Collective
Painting With
Domino

WHAT WE KNOW: Painting With is AnCo’s first record since 2012’s Centipede Hz, and their first that wasn’t worked out in concert. It was recorded without Josh "Deakin" Gibbs, and is heavily influenced by early Beatles, early Ramones, and dinosaurs.

WHEN IT’S OUT: February 19

WHY WE’RE PSYCHED: What site are you on right now? The Economist? Nah, bro: Pitchfork. Of course we’re psyched about new AnCo.

marcos, Tuesday, 12 January 2016 16:39 (eight years ago) link

did Deakin go back to Mali or something

Very selfish, and very ironic (DJP), Tuesday, 12 January 2016 18:05 (eight years ago) link

If not, we should Kickstarter that and make it happen ASAP. Think about the children!

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 12 January 2016 18:12 (eight years ago) link

But apparently they're not psyched about Radiohead anymore.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 12 January 2016 18:21 (eight years ago) link

the idea of AnCo being able to play early Ramones or Beatles songs is hilarious imo

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 January 2016 18:22 (eight years ago) link

I mean do they even know how a rhythm section works

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 January 2016 18:23 (eight years ago) link

dvsn

WHAT WE KNOW: We know the producer Nineteen85, who worked with Drake on "Too Much," "Hold On, We’re Coming Home," and "Hotline Bling," is behind boards. We know they are based in Toronto. We know that the as-yet-unnamed lead vocalist has one hell of a heartbreaking voice.

WHEN IT’S OUT: We dunno!

WHY WE’RE PSYCHED: Look, there are a lot of new R&B acts right now, and every year brings more promising ones, but songs as devastating as "The Line"? Those are hard to write, and even harder to perform. There’s a reason we don’t hear those that often.

http://exclaim.ca/music/article/8203not_yours_to_play_with_why_viet_congs_name_offends-hooded_fangs_april_aliermo_on_community_racism_appropriation_of_neighbours_culture

In a Guardian piece, they explained that their name came from a moment when their bass player was holding his instrument like a weapon. One of them remarked, "All you need is a rice paddy hat and it would be so Viet Cong." The band have claimed "There are zero political connotations… we just honestly thought it sounded good and that it gives some imagery that matches our music in terms of it being explosive and dark." In an interview with Impose Magazine, the band talk about how, in old movies, the Viet Cong were so "bad ass."

billstevejim, Friday, 15 January 2016 21:39 (eight years ago) link

The decadence of the '00s was at an end. It was a time of conservation, of the profit principle, of high anxiety, of major label betrayals, of group therapy and raised voices, of cold, stony pursed lips on poker faces disguising a contagious terror that trickled down from managers and executives quivering in their boots. Free downloads threatened to take away yachts. The end of art was nigh, I could feel it.

i think everyone kinda knew they were wrong about "GOOD Fridays is back" even though they kept writing those completely unconfirmed words so many times throughout the past week as if it they could just make it true by writing them over and over again.

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Saturday, 16 January 2016 22:56 (eight years ago) link

Of course, there’s a long tradition of rock musicians using heroin to inspire their best music—think Lou Reed, Neil Young, Keith Richards—but Smith found no truth in such myths. “You can’t write music when you’re high,” he says plainly. “You can’t do much of anything productive.”

I suppose the generous reading here is that Neil Young used *the subject* of heroin but still wtf editors

could've substituted any number of less ambiguous figures (Cobain as already mentioned in the article, Sonic Boom etc)
