i forgot about "nullus," that's probably the lamest variant of this whole trend

Yeah, I've never even heard of Complex magazine, wtf.

really?? it started appearing in my mailbox one day! no idea wtf i'd bought online or signed up for that caused them to send it to me. netflix maybe?

goole, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 19:39 (fifteen years ago) link

they heard you'd like to see tracy morgan and mclovin come together

Shawty Lo Collier (some dude), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 19:41 (fifteen years ago) link

what's the origin of nullus? i always read it on byron's site and knew what it meant but just chalked it up to "lol byron crawford"

yeah i think it's just another lame gag (pause) that he pounded into (pause) his readership's brains until other people started saying it.

lil wayne was doing the top 10 whatevers on letterman and one of them was about how cute the jonas bros were, and he said "pause" right after...i think the audience laughed because they assumed he was reading a direction from the cue cards, and had someone not told me what it meant i would have assumed the same.

but apparently this thread is about "rap bloggers," whoever they are?

Wow and I thought saying "quote unquote" was lame and shit.

none of them to be found on this board, that's for sure

one month passes...

haha at this thread

eight months pass...

ugh the worst example ever of this is in the new freshmen 10 xxl -- i guess every issue they do this thing where on the staff page, members of the ed staff answer a question and they put the answer next to their name or whatever -- and so the question this month is "which of the freshmen 10 are you most excited about?" and for one dude (the photo editor or something) it reads "Donnis, he seems like the most charismatic of the bunch (pause)" -- if you have to pause for praising someone for having charisma i think i'm getting out of the talking about rap game before it gets any worse

that was a good post jordan (pause)

but actually it is impossible to have a penis on the body of a mermaid (dyao), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:25 (fourteen years ago) link

i really didn't have a huge problem with no homo/nullus/pause thing when it was confined to people like byron crawford, noz, ilm and of course pitchfork reviews of dispet albums, but i think it's pretty disconcerting and depressing to see writers & editors bringing it into supposedly "professional" print magazines

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:27 (fourteen years ago) link

like, how close are we from the magazine being officially renamed "XXL (pause)"

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:29 (fourteen years ago) link

but hip hop writers use rap slang all the time - what's wrong using (pause) too. (pause)

but actually it is impossible to have a penis on the body of a mermaid (dyao), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:31 (fourteen years ago) link

you gonna tell em to stop using "heads" or "in a minute" too

but actually it is impossible to have a penis on the body of a mermaid (dyao), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:32 (fourteen years ago) link

i have a problem with rap writers co-opting the homophobic rap slang "(pause)" in the same way that i would have a problem if xxl changed their editorial policy to state that every female subject in the magazine be referred to as a "bitch" or a "ho"

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:33 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah but that's not really the policy right now is it? you're kinda reading a lot into one guy's offhand comment on a staff comment page, a page where naturally the responses are going to be more casual/reflective of street use

but actually it is impossible to have a penis on the body of a mermaid (dyao), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:36 (fourteen years ago) link

i love the dichotomy of that cover featuring complex's never ending desire to use trendy rap slang & said slang being meticulously copy edited

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:40 (fourteen years ago) link

but that is a pretty flaming cover

but actually it is impossible to have a penis on the body of a mermaid (dyao), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:41 (fourteen years ago) link

& dyao i'm sure if i read rap magazines more often than once every few months when i skim through them i would be able to find more examples of this

hitler runoff (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:41 (fourteen years ago) link

eh I just dunno why you're singling out this particular aspect of rap to be offended about

but actually it is impossible to have a penis on the body of a mermaid (dyao), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:44 (fourteen years ago) link

it has much more to do with journalism than it has to do with rap
