ahh i sometimes hate picking on writers. i'm not a very good writer and i could never do it for my career. i don't know matthew schnipper and otherwise his blurb was fine, i feel like a dick

marcos, Monday, 14 December 2015 21:34 (eight years ago) link

i do not know him but i'm like, matthew, come on, man

i am hungover so "veritable buffet of social garbage" actually really describes me rn

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 14 December 2015 21:37 (eight years ago) link

i almost never care about anything i read online anymore, but this sentence i read today on Pitchfork needs help:

"It will sound as good the day you get fired and get day-drunk at a TGI Fridays as the day you hire a party bus to celebrate your promotion."

scott seward, Monday, 14 December 2015 21:40 (eight years ago) link

i just want to help!

scott seward, Monday, 14 December 2015 21:40 (eight years ago) link

i don't actually know how to help though. i want to help in theory...

scott seward, Monday, 14 December 2015 21:43 (eight years ago) link

that's like the working man's version of "witnessing the stillborn birth of a child while simultaneously having the opportunity to see her play in the afterlife on Imax."

poorzingis (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 December 2015 21:43 (eight years ago) link

lol that line is classic

imo comparing that review to other reviews is like comparing an aquarium to blue construction paper

white ppl should be banned from writing about kendrick lamar, is how i feel about the schnipper blurb, and white ppl trying to earnestly and poetically demonstrate that they get him might be worse than white ppl who don't get him

it was def a weird trend when white people were calling it like an "unapologetically black album" as shorthand for a lot of things

poorzingis (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 15 December 2015 00:39 (eight years ago) link

xp "Overwhelming blackness" was written by a black writer fwiw - Clover Hope. That was the article Carl Wilson was quoting.

i found the whole authenticity & integrity angle on the year in quotes feature really disgusting

flappy bird, Tuesday, 15 December 2015 18:32 (eight years ago) link

Pharrell's original quote was "unapologetically black" and the synonyms kind of proceeded from there with "overwhelming blackness" being Clover Hope's line.

I can see how a "memorable punch lines 2015" might kind of work if some effort was put into making it either v extensive or cohesive, this just seems.. lazy/unfinished

also not a good balance between pics><lyrics

this is kinda weird
http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/936-the-rap-year-book-tupacs-california-love/

Bomb-ass hemp: "Bomb ass" is slang for "very good," and "hemp" is slang for "marijuana." I remember reading this thing about how when you want to add a new word to your vocabulary, you have to use it two times out loud, so I’d recommend that here for you so that you can get comfortable saying this. For example, if your friend’s mother passes away, you might try consoling him or her by commenting on the high quality of the event: "Susan, hi, I just want to say real quick that this is a bomb-ass funeral. Your mother, also bomb-ass, would’ve been pleased."

something wrong with the formatting too or are those endnotes?

that paragraph DOES clearly appear in a list of things mentioned in the lyrics and it almost seems like you'd have to be willfully taking it out of context to make it look "weird." and it's an excerpt from an already published book so any critique of it doesn't really need to be laid at pitchfork's feet itt anyway.

i got a really big steen, and they need some really big zings (some dude), Monday, 28 December 2015 00:51 (eight years ago) link

true, maybe this is the wrong thread - saw the book recommended but was a bit disappointed after reading this excerpt, quoted part sounds like a faux naive rapgenius annotation to me, but probably I just don't share the author's humour

still, what's with the 1-13 list at the end?

niels, Monday, 28 December 2015 08:38 (eight years ago) link

i'm disproportionately annoyed that this post about covering D'Angelo doesn't mention that "She's Always in My Hair" is a Prince song, making it a cover of a cover.

Animal Collective
Painting With
Domino

WHAT WE KNOW: Painting With is AnCo’s first record since 2012’s Centipede Hz, and their first that wasn’t worked out in concert. It was recorded without Josh "Deakin" Gibbs, and is heavily influenced by early Beatles, early Ramones, and dinosaurs.

WHEN IT’S OUT: February 19

WHY WE’RE PSYCHED: What site are you on right now? The Economist? Nah, bro: Pitchfork. Of course we’re psyched about new AnCo.

marcos, Tuesday, 12 January 2016 16:39 (eight years ago) link

did Deakin go back to Mali or something
