Acclaimed Music Top 40 Songs from 1994 poll

"Interstate Love Song" because I heard it for the first time last week. great song

at the time I liked literally all of these except Zombie. would rather never hear the Oasis songs ever again by now, of course

Regulate is probably the right answer but I assume it will get plenty of love already so might vote No Good, Inner City Life or Connection

voted juicy for the time i was walking down the street and the intro to juicy wafted from a car radio and the driver immediately changed the station and i did a shocked, reflexive full-body spin to stare at the person who turned off juicy. obviously you're just sick of stuff sometimes but it was still a very de gustibus moment.

Sabotage, which still sounds fresh every time.

Interstate Love Song kind of feels like the perfect mainstream alternative rock song though. A recognizable riff that anyone can play, but an interesting chromatic progression in the verse and then a jammy bridge on top of it.

Pavement will win this

Also, unlike a lot of its competitors, Interstate Love Song is not drawn out into a pointlessly long 5+ minute death march. (See: Every Pearl Jam hit)

I went for Regulate in the end because I think it's the only one I'd be happy to hear under literally any circumstances.

"Inner City Life" is amazing but I only heard it for the first time this year and don't trust myself to vote for it over songs I've known for a decade or two.

Yeah, I'm finding this list way more of a chore to get through than the others. I hate Green Day, Weezer, and Oasis, and the last time I tried to listen to The Downward Spiral again, I couldn't get through it. I never got the cult of Jeff Buckley, and Blur were always really hit and miss for me. I like "Regulate" well enough, but I kind of get where clemenza is coming from with the "camp" comment (I actually prefer "N.Y. State of Mind").

Will let the playlist play through in the off-chance it has any surprises in store for me (I'm at "Seether" as I type), but I suspect I'll probably just end up voting for "Connection."

There are probably five songs on Crooked Rain Crooked Rain that would have topped this list for me, but "Cut Your Hair" and "Gold Soundz" are not among them, so I voted for "Undone" -- such a weird thing to be popular (more crooked in some ways than Pavement themselves) and it never ceases to sound strange to me all these years later. "Sabotage" will win I guess and has a good case.

"Hallelujah" probably never needs to be covered again. I quite happily enjoyed the Buckley version for years (a cover of a cover), but every rendition after his makes me run screaming. It can be so plodding and maudlin. It's like when people play "Where Did You Sleep Last Night," but by copying the Nirvana Unplugged version precisely. Shouldn't be attempted.

I had the "Regulate" cassingle. it was just the same song on both sides so I kept playing it over and over again.

also didn't know anything about street lyrics and thought "regulators" at the beginning was referring to the sneakers (of which I had a pair)

prolly would've voted "Last Goodbye" but would have strongly considered "Sabotage" "Juicy" or "Black Hole Sun."

I shared an apartment with frat nerds for a couple of years; one was an Irish fiddler and the other would have been all over that top three. I also sang with a frat nerd in college who probably would have swapped Pavement with Warren G.
