"That faith was repaid when the next album, You Can Tune A Piano, But You Can’t Tuna Fish, hit the Top 30 in 1978. Who the hell came up with that title?"

KEVIN CRONIN- I’ll take the credit [laughs]. We were at a party in our hometown, Champaign, Illinois. There were all kinds of nefarious activities going on. And when I woke up the next day, somehow that phrase – You Can Tune A Piano, But You Can’t Tuna Fish – was in my mind. No one is sure who uttered the phrase first, but I was the guy that said: “That’s a pretty cool title for the album.” Everybody thought I was crazy. But Joe Walsh had called his record The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get. So the stage was set for wacky album titles.

Loving this recent burst of no-name pub acts who had their own album to do.

I love how so many of these album covers seemed to have been the result of this conversation:

The Artist:"Man taking that album cover picture today! You think I should get dressed up?"

The Manager: "Nah, you look fine"

A: "Take a shower?"

M: "C'mon time is money! Oh, that should be the name of the record!"

Wow. For a second I read that as being by The Association and was trying to imagine what kind of unlikely career developments might have brought them to that point.

Doctor Casino, important war pigeon (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 23 December 2015 16:52 (eight years ago) link

Yes, Karl-Heinz Wiberny ending up in The Association is just too far-fetched.

Anyway, it's not a three, it's a yogh. (Tom D.), Wednesday, 23 December 2015 16:55 (eight years ago) link

till yesterday was only familiar with 'bend it', but watched some of their beat club performances which are surprisingly heavy ('loos of england' aside)... great fuzz bass. tempted to investigate further now.

i unabashedly love a lot of these titles and covers tbh

Yeah they were kind of like a twee version of the early Move stuff, some great basslines and a few really killer tunes.

Also check "Zabadak!" "Hold Tight" and their goofy chart-topper "The Legend of Xanadu." This 1967 EP release also seems thread-relatable:

I went and looked up the album that kicked off the whole thing - I've Got My Own Album To Do - and found the closing track was called Crotch Music. I had a listen and it's not what I expected at all, more like someone put the 70's in a blender, of if Battles collaborated with Edgar Winter.

Incidentally I heard Ronnie Wood was in an old man pub in Kildare with some hangers-on a couple of years ago and someone handed him a guitar and asked for a tune. He started singing and the barman came over and told him there was no singing allowed. "That's Ronnie Wood from the Rolling Stones, you can't tell him to shut up". "I don't care if he's Daniel O'Donnell, he can't sing in here".
