think this is the first time i have more followers than following B-)

tho theyre roughly the same so i kinda look like a #teamfollow back "fuckboi"

I started off with a joke account, just C&P'ing random non sequiturs and never letting on who I was on the other end.

Then I started feeling left out and started using an account with my own name. It's a bit scary - I don't even go by my name on here - but hey, I only have 100 followers so what the hell.

My boss got on early and has a two-letter handle.

I can't remember why I don't! I think maybe I only tried my default and it was taken so I just gave up

approaching nine years on twitter in a few days (!)

i'd love to see what twitter was like pre-2009 when no one was on it

it was really just programmers at conferences tweeting about how they were at a conference I think, you could just look at everybody's tweets on one page, it crashed all the time, etc.

I've been on 8 years and 8 months. I honestly don't remember it early on, it really took me several years to go into it.

Get into it.

twitter is cool in that it took my previous need to overshare on ilx and provided another and more instantaneous way of satisfying it probably why i don't post as much to ilx anymore

spending some time away from ilx and then coming back makes you realize how repetitive a lot of ilx is idk

not to say twitter isn't

tumblr is th eonly good platform left if all u care about are memes like me, the mem carer

i think those perspectives mainly focus on the business end of twitter. i personally don't see it dying soon but it really shifted in 2012-2013 from a kind of cool and fascinating thing where ppl were really funny and i felt less alone (lol) to a site of unbelievable anxiety, which has gotten way worse in the past two years, even as i followed as few ppl as possible

the professionalisation of twitter is obv the worst thing to have happened to it but there's also a...flattening of discussion, something that's the antithesis of how conversations used to happen in web 2.0 or whatever

a slightly more minor twitter bugbear has to be when people RT 10 tweets in a row from someone who's gone on a rant (or doesn't bother attempting concision)

it might be a very on-point sequence of tweets but you can point me towards it in ONE of your own, stop clogging my already-clogged TL

yeah sometimes i will RT two or three in a row that work without the rest or might make a follower curious to see the rest but 10 us a lot

More than 3 RT's in a row gets a permamute of whoever you're RT'ing. Just tell me to go check out their TL if it's that important.

ive been on twitter roughly as long as ive been on ilx and i dont think twitter was ever as good as ilx was at creating conversation. i mean a good ilx thread is communal, collaborative in a way tweets arent meant to be. most of the funniest and smartest stuff on ilx relies on its larger context to be fully read.

the recent nes-era video games poll was at least enjoyable (and lol @ twitter adding polls) but ive only recently started ilxing regularly again so i dont know what was poppin in 2015. im not that interested in think piece culture or tv shows so maybe those threads are legit and im just missing out

i was thinking abt this as i was walking to work and i think what i like(d) abt ilx and sort of web 1.5 generally was the directedness of it. like if i have some ideas abt joan didion its sort of comforting to post them in a space dedicated to discussion of her, rather than trying to format my thoughts abt joan didion in a way thats coherent w/ my larger social media brand for twitter or tumblr or w/e

anyway my next day off i think ill do a younow stream of me unpacking and organizing my books

YEah ilx has always been best for niche interests unfortunately my interests are almost too niche now nad nobody really wants to talk about sinosphere film or theres not much too say and the stuff that does generate discussion is by and large p lmae

it's cool to watch a tv show with ilx and also some good movies like gravity but then for example the mad max fury road thread was a dud

this is exactly what i feel!

and also in terms of interaction - i don't have a single mode of interaction with everyone i know and talk to, and web 1.5 hived everything off to an extent. twitter increasingly enforces a very 1d and rigid social media brand

1d and rigid about what to talk about, how to talk about it etc etc

a lot of the great posters of yore would slowly stop posting on ilx until they only posted on their favorite sports subboard and i feel that

twitter display names are undoubtedly the worst thing about twitter, they are all so bad

ilx ones are worse

all of the lame variations on "trill" or other decade+ old southern rap meme puns fill me with despair and make me long for the display name era of ilx

agree. so many cringe puns on "bae" too

i like combining cool rap-related slang with references to nerd culture of the 90s or terms beloved of urban youth to academic subjects

my interests are almost too niche now and nobody really wants to talk about [stuff i want to talk about]

feel this although admittedly working long-ass finance guy hours i have fewer interests in general than i used to. really i wish that ppl on ilx were still interested in the sort of sociological trend-watching that i am. or books.

huh, never used it but i didn't know tumblr was dead. guess that boat has sailed. the slow death of ilx makes me sad, i agree with lex and Lamp that you can't really have the same discussions on twitter as on ilx. but i still love twitter and don't get a vibe of "anxiety" from it. twitter is both its own self contained thing but also has a dual role as like, scaffolding erected (lol) above an underlying web 2.0 structure; a lot of tweets are "here is a link to a blog post i wrote in response to @twitteruser bt.ly/420" where twitter is like the edges connecting the nodes of stuff that more closely resembles ilx, plus stray off the cuff commentary. another big functional difference is the temporal dimension, like you can come home at the end of the day and say "let's see what me ilxor chums got up to today" and just read the threads that got bumped thoughout the day. you can't really do that on twitter, like you can't go back

think all the tweens have moved on to snapchat

i think the ppl for whom tweeting is a professional obligation have a sort of frantic sensibility to their tweeting. its not really anxious its more the sympathetic exhaustion you get from watching someone who is always on, always performing, selling themselves. this long commercial for something your pretty sure no ones buying. it kinda ties in to ppl who use twitter as a way of connecting the various web-based platforms although tbh that stuff just feels more effective on facebook.

maybe im the only one but i love back-reading some weirdos twitter just seeing what they had to say like two years ago the state of the union.

back when i was first addicted to twitter (as a consumer and not a content creator) i would obsessively read my timeline and read all of it and never miss like get up in the morning and read all the tweets from last night

probably why i burned out on it and didn't start again until recently

i used to do the same with irc chats

now i'm pretty chill about it like you log on and read what's happening and then you log off and it's cool don't have to read everything

i like twitter because it reminds me of irc actually like the stream is always on there's always content but the asymmetricalities are kinda cool

also it's probably the closest i've come to a high school lunch table environ like if you thought ILX was cliquey then

example of someone we follow who is like this? this descrip made me think of miserable humanities phd students i used to follow who i guess are trying to position themselves for placement in hip departments that would take kind of stuff into consideration? like, the new inquiry people? they are the worst people on our internet though IMHO. but i don't get this as a general overarching vibe

the dopamine hit from having a tweet go viral or even from just having the people who follow you fav a good tweet of yours ensures that a lot of narcissists make twitter their primary home
