"wrote a thing"

lag∞n, Friday, 20 November 2015 16:11 (eight years ago) link

excited to announce is def one of the primo depressing phrases online

lag∞n, Friday, 20 November 2015 16:12 (eight years ago) link

feel like twitter gives me insight into how baked lag∞n is any particular moment, so ✓

mookieproof, Friday, 20 November 2015 16:12 (eight years ago) link

lmao ✌

I realized Something Was Up with Twitter when the committee for my college reunion started collecting everyone's Twitter handles to put on a list and mine was the only one not geared towards promoting my brand/professional work. At first I was embarrassed but it quickly became hilarious as I watched white paper link after appointment announcement after newspaper article scroll by punctuated with me joking with ilxors about some terrible band/politician

yeah a few years ago i started a new job and on my first day my boss was like "follow me on twitter" - until then i had mostly used twitter as a kind of secret tool for stuff i'd never put on facebook, i mean nothing illegal or whatever but given it was my first day of a new job i had to go and delete a load of things and blandify my account. as it turned out my boss wouldn't have cared but i didn't know that then.

put my career there for the first time recently, i guess because i am a contractor and it might get me work, and also cos i am proud of it for a change.

how long before moments becomes the default tab

lag∞n, Friday, 20 November 2015 16:16 (eight years ago) link

it's nice when ppl compliment their friends but i am getting fed up with 'the god @user wrote' and 'the dude @user has thoughts'

it is a peeve

mookieproof, Friday, 20 November 2015 16:21 (eight years ago) link

LG: why didn't you make a separate Twitter account for business associates? Too much hassle to switch between them?

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Friday, 20 November 2015 16:21 (eight years ago) link

I had a brief period where I was more into using twitter for professional ideas and then some ppl followed me and I ended up posting lots of swearing and bad tweets and they went away

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 20 November 2015 16:23 (eight years ago) link

i guess i have a decent amount of followers for my account as it is, so i decided to keep it to one. tho tbh i churn a lot because i post about 20 diff things obsessively for an hour at a time. my personal brand is highly fragmented

xpost

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Friday, 20 November 2015 16:24 (eight years ago) link

i mean like, i could be posting about any one of those 20 things for an hour, rather than all 20 all at once.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Friday, 20 November 2015 16:24 (eight years ago) link

I occasionally use my Twitter for work-related stuff, esp. if I'm at a conference or event, or for brownie points with my SVP by RT-ing the company feed, but mostly I talk about Star Wars or tell Newt Gingrich and James Woods to fuck off.

Resting Bushface (Phil D.), Friday, 20 November 2015 16:26 (eight years ago) link

i talk abt industry related things sometimes but in a v unprofessional manner

lag∞n, Friday, 20 November 2015 16:29 (eight years ago) link

lol Phil, I caught you going after James Woods

one of my most popular recent Tweets was going after Ben Carson so game recognize game

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Friday, 20 November 2015 16:32 (eight years ago) link

ned is a good amplifier for all personal brands. most big numbers i've got have started with support from ned.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Friday, 20 November 2015 16:33 (eight years ago) link

want numbers? simply call ned and ask him to leverage his assets in your favour.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Friday, 20 November 2015 16:34 (eight years ago) link

Who can help me create a bot to respond to every single James Woods tweet with a screencap of him cleaning the Quik-E-Mart microwave on "The Simpsons?"

Resting Bushface (Phil D.), Friday, 20 November 2015 16:37 (eight years ago) link

watch out, he might sue you

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 20 November 2015 16:39 (eight years ago) link

just unfollowed (almost) all non individual human accounts: publications brands businesses and it felt so good

lag∞n, Friday, 20 November 2015 19:01 (eight years ago) link

was abt a quarter of the total

lag∞n, Friday, 20 November 2015 19:01 (eight years ago) link

i followed so many like digital agencies and accounts for front end frameworks lol smh

lag∞n, Friday, 20 November 2015 19:02 (eight years ago) link

think this is the first time i have more followers than following B-)

lag∞n, Friday, 20 November 2015 19:04 (eight years ago) link

tho theyre roughly the same so i kinda look like a #teamfollow back "fuckboi"

lag∞n, Friday, 20 November 2015 19:05 (eight years ago) link

I started off with a joke account, just C&P'ing random non sequiturs and never letting on who I was on the other end.

Then I started feeling left out and started using an account with my own name. It's a bit scary - I don't even go by my name on here - but hey, I only have 100 followers so what the hell.

My boss got on early and has a two-letter handle.

pplains, Saturday, 21 November 2015 03:19 (eight years ago) link

I can't remember why I don't! I think maybe I only tried my default and it was taken so I just gave up

μpright mammal (mh), Saturday, 21 November 2015 03:30 (eight years ago) link

approaching nine years on twitter in a few days (!)

μpright mammal (mh), Saturday, 21 November 2015 03:31 (eight years ago) link

i'd love to see what twitter was like pre-2009 when no one was on it

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 November 2015 03:34 (eight years ago) link

it was really just programmers at conferences tweeting about how they were at a conference I think, you could just look at everybody's tweets on one page, it crashed all the time, etc.

pizza rolls are a food that exists (silby), Saturday, 21 November 2015 07:03 (eight years ago) link

I've been on 8 years and 8 months. I honestly don't remember it early on, it really took me several years to go into it.

Jeff, Saturday, 21 November 2015 11:21 (eight years ago) link

Get into it.

Jeff, Saturday, 21 November 2015 11:22 (eight years ago) link

twitter is cool in that it took my previous need to overshare on ilx and provided another and more instantaneous way of satisfying it probably why i don't post as much to ilx anymore

, Saturday, 21 November 2015 12:24 (eight years ago) link

spending some time away from ilx and then coming back makes you realize how repetitive a lot of ilx is idk

, Saturday, 21 November 2015 12:26 (eight years ago) link

not to say twitter isn't

tumblr is th eonly good platform left if all u care about are memes like me, the mem carer

, Saturday, 21 November 2015 12:26 (eight years ago) link

i think those perspectives mainly focus on the business end of twitter. i personally don't see it dying soon but it really shifted in 2012-2013 from a kind of cool and fascinating thing where ppl were really funny and i felt less alone (lol) to a site of unbelievable anxiety, which has gotten way worse in the past two years, even as i followed as few ppl as possible

really feel this

the professionalisation of twitter is obv the worst thing to have happened to it but there's also a...flattening of discussion, something that's the antithesis of how conversations used to happen in web 2.0 or whatever

lex pretend, Saturday, 21 November 2015 12:53 (eight years ago) link

a slightly more minor twitter bugbear has to be when people RT 10 tweets in a row from someone who's gone on a rant (or doesn't bother attempting concision)

it might be a very on-point sequence of tweets but you can point me towards it in ONE of your own, stop clogging my already-clogged TL

lex pretend, Saturday, 21 November 2015 12:56 (eight years ago) link

yeah sometimes i will RT two or three in a row that work without the rest or might make a follower curious to see the rest but 10 us a lot

The Cuddling Of The American Mind (some dude), Saturday, 21 November 2015 13:09 (eight years ago) link

More than 3 RT's in a row gets a permamute of whoever you're RT'ing. Just tell me to go check out their TL if it's that important.

Jeff, Saturday, 21 November 2015 13:19 (eight years ago) link

ive been on twitter roughly as long as ive been on ilx and i dont think twitter was ever as good as ilx was at creating conversation. i mean a good ilx thread is communal, collaborative in a way tweets arent meant to be. most of the funniest and smartest stuff on ilx relies on its larger context to be fully read.

i kindof dont really know what im supposed to be using twitter for in 2015 tbrr

LEGIT (Lamp), Saturday, 21 November 2015 14:09 (eight years ago) link

One big wish I have is for Twitter names to be longer my display name potential is capped severely on Twitter

, Saturday, 21 November 2015 14:15 (eight years ago) link

Agree w that but when was the last really good n funny ilx thread

, Saturday, 21 November 2015 14:16 (eight years ago) link

the recent nes-era video games poll was at least enjoyable (and lol @ twitter adding polls) but ive only recently started ilxing regularly again so i dont know what was poppin in 2015. im not that interested in think piece culture or tv shows so maybe those threads are legit and im just missing out

i was thinking abt this as i was walking to work and i think what i like(d) abt ilx and sort of web 1.5 generally was the directedness of it. like if i have some ideas abt joan didion its sort of comforting to post them in a space dedicated to discussion of her, rather than trying to format my thoughts abt joan didion in a way thats coherent w/ my larger social media brand for twitter or tumblr or w/e

anyway my next day off i think ill do a younow stream of me unpacking and organizing my books

LEGIT (Lamp), Saturday, 21 November 2015 15:03 (eight years ago) link

YEah ilx has always been best for niche interests unfortunately my interests are almost too niche now nad nobody really wants to talk about sinosphere film or theres not much too say and the stuff that does generate discussion is by and large p lmae

, Saturday, 21 November 2015 15:12 (eight years ago) link

it's cool to watch a tv show with ilx and also some good movies like gravity but then for example the mad max fury road thread was a dud

, Saturday, 21 November 2015 15:13 (eight years ago) link

wld cld talk abt twitter haha

lag∞n, Saturday, 21 November 2015 15:14 (eight years ago) link

this is exactly what i feel!

and also in terms of interaction - i don't have a single mode of interaction with everyone i know and talk to, and web 1.5 hived everything off to an extent. twitter increasingly enforces a very 1d and rigid social media brand

lex pretend, Saturday, 21 November 2015 15:17 (eight years ago) link

1d and rigid about what to talk about, how to talk about it etc etc

lex pretend, Saturday, 21 November 2015 15:18 (eight years ago) link

a lot of the great posters of yore would slowly stop posting on ilx until they only posted on their favorite sports subboard and i feel that

, Saturday, 21 November 2015 15:39 (eight years ago) link

i been too busy to post on ILH tho >_<

, Saturday, 21 November 2015 15:39 (eight years ago) link

We welcome u back w open arms bro
