Al Jardine, because he's not a cunt like Mike Love is.

I'd be hard-pressed to pick out Al's finest moment as a Beach Boy. Like, what is his biggest accomplishment, getting Brian to arrange and record a cover of "Sloop John B"?

'Lookin' At Tomorrow'?

Turrican, Thursday, 12 November 2015 20:17 (eight years ago) link

hunangarage, Thursday, 12 November 2015 20:19 (eight years ago) link

i like his lead vocal on help me rhonda

polyphonic, Thursday, 12 November 2015 20:22 (eight years ago) link

Al's highlights imo are Help me Rhonda, I Know There's an Answer, and that one part of the California Saga. But Al's contributions go unnoticed mostly because he blends with Carl and Brian so well in the stack.. i don't thing the vocals would be the same without him

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 12 November 2015 20:24 (eight years ago) link

Also he was a vital part of the live group, singing most of the leads on the pet sounds and smile stuff.

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 12 November 2015 20:26 (eight years ago) link

But still the dude is a bore.

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 12 November 2015 20:33 (eight years ago) link

Oh, Blondie in a heartbeat! I'm always torn because, while I love non-Blondie Beach Boys a great deal, his are among my favorite Beach Boys songs but are also generally pretty unrepresentative of the band on the whole.

I never hear anyone talking about this one:

He's a dick but.... Mike Love. His bass provided an interesting contrast with the rest of the family vocals and he sang lead on some of their biggest songs. No Mike, no Beach Boys.

skip, Thursday, 12 November 2015 20:58 (eight years ago) link

oh shit Al wrote and sings lead on Wake The World.

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 12 November 2015 21:02 (eight years ago) link

Mike. No contest.

No Mike, no Beach Boys.

More importantly, surely, no Mike, no Can we be shown weirdos + Mike Love?

Caput Johannis in Disco (Tom D.), Thursday, 12 November 2015 21:09 (eight years ago) link

im p sure there would be lots of really good music w/o mike love but hey thats just me.

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 12 November 2015 21:15 (eight years ago) link

when i saw the beach boys live i was a little amused that mike love changed the lyrics of "help me rhonda" from "she was gonna be my wife and i was gonna be her man" to "she was gonna be my woman..."

that lyric change is the exact type of thing mike takes tons of pride in.

I wish the Beach Boys with Blondie and Ricky had been a justly-feted proper side project rather than just an anomalous blip in Beach Boys history that unfortunately occurred when people were paying relatively little attention to the band.
