when an alarm is snoozing, the lock screen will show how much time until the alarm goes off again. you can swipe left on the countdown to cancel the snooze

I need someone to show me the right way to use Reminders. I keep getting like 10 week-plus old reminders on my lock screen and half the time I can't properly set one up unless I use Siri.

The only way i can figure out how to make a Reminder go away is to mark it completed, then tap "Show Completed" then tap it again after it turns into "Hide Completed"

For such a simple app it's a little wack

My feeling is that Apple is really good at product design and hardware and not really good at apps or the Internet

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 20:48 (eight years ago) link

It makes sense, b/c product design is the purview of about a dozen people, and yet you need large and politically competitive software development orgs to make all this software.

pizza rolls are a food that exists (silby), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 20:54 (eight years ago) link

that's a good point, and as long as they're making bank on the beautiful products, there's probably not that much added benefit for them to try to up their app game to the level of a google compared to how much it would cost, especially since they don't want to go the data-mining route

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 21:00 (eight years ago) link

basically they need most of their apps to work well enough not to be embarrassing (maps!), a few flagships to dazzle (garage band?), and everything to be easy enough to use for the crowd that's minimally savvy and isn't going to download a lot of other apps (old people)

Comics better on air, you're not occasionally pinching and zooming to read dialog.

i just realized there must be a good joke format somehow where you manipulate someone wearing an apple watch into explaining how the pedometer works and at a certain point they explain there is an accelerometer and you say "ok so basically that thing detects jerks" and they answer in the affirmative and then you take it from there.

People with an iPhone 6 or 6s who go caseless: Why caseless? Are there cons to going caseless? Do you ever put your phone down on a surface camera facing downward despite the fact that the thing sticks out? Might it fuck up the camera to have it in direct contact with whatever surface you’re putting the phone down on?

Please tell me about the caseless experience. (I use a case and have been for the majority of the time I’ve had my phone. I have an Apple Leather Case or whatever it’s called in black on there right now.)

markers, Thursday, 7 January 2016 20:56 (eight years ago) link

caseless on a 6+ seems legit insane

Spottie, Thursday, 7 January 2016 21:01 (eight years ago) link

i dropped one in the toilet and a case did not save it. it had one job!
life is fine without a case. the camera nub is pretty durable. rest it on rocks, gravel, salt quarries whatever.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 7 January 2016 21:08 (eight years ago) link

Main con to me about going caseless is getting the back scratched. Really hate when that happens

Nhex, Thursday, 7 January 2016 21:55 (eight years ago) link

i am caseless (on a 6). i am not a dropper.

i put it down camera-down all the time. the camera lens cover is made of sapphire and is basically unscratchable iirc.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 7 January 2016 22:00 (eight years ago) link

The camera lens is sapphire glass, nothing ia going to happen to it.

The 6 is the first phone I've considered using a case on because it is just too damn slippery. iPhone 5 was the perfect form factor as far as I'm concerned. Thinking of getting the 7+ this fall because the 6 is already unusable with one hand so why not.

Your Favorite Album in the Cutout Bin, Thursday, 7 January 2016 22:03 (eight years ago) link

seems like the 5s form factor might get an update in a month or two? http://www.macrumors.com/2015/12/29/iphone-6c-larger-battery-vs-iphone-5s/

how many times has that been claimed? seems semi-credible, but it seemed semi-semi-credible last year

can't believe they dropped the headphone jack two years ago!!

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 7 January 2016 22:14 (eight years ago) link

it's not a secret that apple's definitely testing smaller form factors. when/if they ever get released though...

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 7 January 2016 22:23 (eight years ago) link

I dropped my 6S and fractured the camera lens (which I didn't realize until I wondered about light smear in photos.)

baah using the lightening port for a headphone jack seems like such a shitty idea, just keep the goddamned jack you don't need to invent an new kind of headphone cable you fucks

marcos, Friday, 8 January 2016 03:47 (eight years ago) link

Lightning* port obv

marcos, Friday, 8 January 2016 03:47 (eight years ago) link

So sick of carting adapters around. It's bad enough with laptops -- by the time you have all those you need, the laptop is even bulkier and less wieldy than it would have been if they'd just included the damn ports. Lightning for audio-out is the worst yet: the number of unanticipated places it's useful to be able to plug straight in is huge, so I'll end up toting the adapter everywhere.

What does it get them anyway, except more MFI cash? They can make it thinner if they like - the iPhone still isn't as thin as the iPod Touch -- and they can make it waterproof too. Fuckers.

stet, Friday, 8 January 2016 11:41 (eight years ago) link

I remember when Nokias didn't have standard headphone port either, and that was shit. Didn't Nintendo try to have proprietary audio-out on a DS once? That didn't last.

stet, Friday, 8 January 2016 11:42 (eight years ago) link

Oh yeah - I had a Sony Ericsson that you needed a dongle adaptor to use regular headphones with. Crazy times.

When do we think new Mac Minis are coming? Does Apple care any more?

I'd lose these so quick.

I love the idea of wireless headphones, but recently switched back to wired from some bluetooth ones. It was just annoying to keep them charged

Jeff, Friday, 8 January 2016 20:45 (eight years ago) link

Just when the current earpod line is actually sounding good, Apple has to turn them into walkie talkies. Fuck.

For serious iOS development, which one of these versions of Xcode do I want? The beta one? The regular one? Which one do most developers use?

https://developer.apple.com/xcode/download/

markers, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 21:08 (eight years ago) link

You don't need to use a beta unless you are an established developer trying to be ready with new OS compatibility and features for a commercial product on day 1 of general availability.

petulant dick master (silby), Wednesday, 27 January 2016 21:35 (eight years ago) link

grab regular unless you're developing stuff specifically with unreleased features, like a future version of mac/ios

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 10 February 2016 23:14 (eight years ago) link

To actually set the date back that far manually is quite laborious, requiring lots of scrolling, saving the time and then re-entering the time and date settings to scroll some more. Users are not likely to do it by accident, although pranksters have taken to bricking Apple Store demo units.

But there is a possibility that a malicious attacker could trick an iOS device connected to a network set to automatically adjusting its time settings into setting the date to 1 January 1970 by pretending to be a time server. A hacker could brick every 64-bit iPhone connected to a public Wi-Fi network, for instance.

Users curious about the bug have reportedly bricked their devices trying to disprove the reports on Reddit, ending up having to have the iOS devices replaced by Apple. The Guardian suggests that you do not try it.
