Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

good to see raking an organization over the coals actually having what appears to be a net-positive outcome

It sounds like the Level Up people weren't told that the Save Point people were going to be there.

jmm, Friday, 30 October 2015 19:54 (eight years ago) link

i'm not so sure about that.

The summit will include Randi Harper, Katherine Cross and Caroline Sinders from “Level Up: Overcoming Harassment in Games,” as well as Perry Jones, Mercedes Carrera, and Lynn Walsh from “SavePoint: A Discussion on the Gaming Community.” We are working with both groups to develop the most productive focus for their appearances.

what i'm seeing is that the first three speakers were not told that their (cancelled) event was being reinstated in a combined format with the latter three, who, let's be frank, hate them.

xp

goole, Friday, 30 October 2015 19:57 (eight years ago) link

so the timeline is (as far as i understand it)

anti-harassment people propose panel about design, their proposal is mobbed on line, but succeeds
gg people holler at sxsw to give them a panel too, which it does (i think w/o the same proposal process!)
after a shitload of hate mail (from everyone, afaict) sxsw cancels *both* panels
media aghast, vox and buzzfeed threaten boycott at cancellations
sxsw cooks up replacement panel -- throwing 'both sides' into the same room for a whole day

I’m the Founder of and Editor for the Open Gaming Society. I’ve played games since the age of 6 and hope to someday make a career of making them. I love this industry with all my heart and want to see it move on to a better place. You can almost always find me buried in some game whether it be The Witcher, GTA, League of Legends, or The Elder Scrolls – I’m always playing something.

It's amazing how often I see this pattern: see weird outlier asshole comment on game/SF content (not even related to harassment, feminism whatever) from someone with a Twitter handle that would have seemed edgy in 1992. Dig into their tweets - GG. The aggrieved minority thing they're doing is some paranoid style in American politics shit.

EXCLUSIVE: Amy Pascal’s Pascal Pictures has won a bidding battle for Crash Override: How To Save The Internet From Itself, a memoir by game designer Zoe Quinn that sold to Touchstone/Simon & Schuster and will be published September, 2016. The property was bid on by several studios and TV outlets, and several actresses are circling, with interest from Scarlett Johansson said to be keenest.

The movie deal was based on a proposal titled Control Alt Delete, and tells the story of how Quinn, creator of the hip interactive game Depression Quest, was targeted by a digital mob bent on upending her life when a blog post by her ex-boyfriend went viral. It sparked the widely-discussed Gamergate controversy and took a surprising turn when instead of running, she decided to fight back. It is a very inside look at gaming and nerd culture and what happens when one gets caught in the gears of that machine.

Kind of insane they will make a movie about this. It seems like every public event even slightly related to the topic gets death threats. Not sure GG would tone down the violent rhetoric in the event of a mainstream film release.

i can see it working well as a paranoia thriller - you've got a protagonist who no longer feels safe in their own home but, when they go out, every stranger on the street could be a gamergate maniac with ill intentions.

On Thursday, the organization revealed its nominees for this year's awards, which will be streamed online on a variety of platforms Dec. 3. Along with nominations for titles like "Fallout 4" and "Super Mario Maker" came a bit of detail about the panel of judges who helped select them: A roster of the 32 people on the jury appears to list only one woman.

#ethicsingamingjournalism question

http://kotaku.com/a-price-of-games-journalism-1743526293

I dont know what to think about this Kotaku article bitching about losing access from Bioware and Ubisoft? I feel like they should explain more about how they made their money being third party PR departments for these companies for years before they lost their sweet sweet access to news and info.

carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 19 November 2015 23:17 (eight years ago) link

lol they're being blacklisted for leaking the existence of a video game and some early screenshots. oh and the exciting news that 2 assassin's creed games are coming out in the fall. obv they're still the PR department for these companies, they're just doing it without publisher oversight and the publishers are mad.

Mordy, Thursday, 19 November 2015 23:28 (eight years ago) link

Totilo has generally seemed pretty straight-up to me, leaning to his side on this one. Surprising that Kotaku even does the the kind of non-flattering industry stories mentioned, we usually have to wait until a company dies before we hear these things

i get what kotaku is trying to be but this idea that it's personal is kinda funny. like, of course they cut them off, and virtually anyone who says bad shit about them, because the literally DOZENS of dollars they were spending keeping places like kotaku on board are better spent on annoying youtube stars now. might as well give review copies to dorks with 4 mill subscribers whose reviews are easy to parse on a smartphone.
