Wow I really like these. Reminds me of Nat Geo photo collages.

i feel like i should be able to do something more interesting with 174 tediously isolated tiger layers, but whatever

NICE. That gif contains multitudes.

two weeks pass...

starting to mess around with projecting images onto real objects. this is just a real messy one but it was the first one where i kind of completed a lo-fi proof of concept. there are really crisp and precise ways to do it that involve 3d modeling but i think i'm fine with just approximating the effect and making minor adjustments at the end to match the image onto the object.

is that yours?! either way it's cool. and yeah, i know he's a household name but i didn't know anything about Tony Oursler

which made me want to look into that kind of stuff, possibly combine some sensor action too

Karl Malone, Saturday, 5 December 2015 03:02 (eight years ago) link

No, no, no that's not mine. Hell, I was going to post one of those Haunted Mansion singing busts, but couldn't find a gif sweet enough.

that oursler stuff looks awesome!

those gifs just above didn't come out the way i thought it would, but it might be a neat process to apply to something else. in photoshop you can "tween" 2 animation frames so that it creates a new frame (or frames) that's a hybrid of the two surrounding it, in terms of positioning of elements and opacity. the one on the top left is the original, and then i started creating tweened frames and deleting the originals. as you go lower, you're seeing tweens of tweens, and then tweens of the tweened tweens, then tweens of the tweened tweened tweens, etc. i know that doesn't make any sense but it's fun to type, and i do think it would potentially create a cool effect if applied to a more interesting image.

in other news i'm trying to get better at cinema 4D. a friend directed me toward it because apparently you can use it to make rough computer models of real life spaces so that you can project videos/gifs/images onto IRL oblong objects without it spilling onto other surfaces. i made a rookie attempt at doing something like that recently with ted cruz faces on amazon boxes (see here but doing it via cinema 4D would let me be way more precise and allow for more flexibility too. ANYWAY (this my bl0g) when i started messing around with cinema 4D i realized it's a really easy-to-use application with tons of animation capabilities as well. i have a feeling that it's what people like DVDP use to make their gifs.

Karl Malone, Monday, 28 December 2015 21:45 (eight years ago) link

despite all of that i've really been in a depressing rut recently. all i can think about are cyborg politico faces

just in case anyone's interested (*crickets*), i'm thinking of doing a little twitch stream of my gifmaking adventures tonight, probably starting around 7:30 or 8:00pm EST. i figured it might be kind of interesting - i know i'd love to watch in on people working on stuff and flailing away and making tons of mistakes, rather than watching streamlined tutorials which pretend like everything is so straightforward. it might be inspiring in a way, too, since you can see 1) how simple it really is and 2) how much i manage to fuck it up at every juncture all the same.

anyway, i'll post the link here later tonight if anyone's interested. i usually just start with zero idea of wtf to do, but this time i'm planning on doing a trump of many faces because it's a familiar process and finding the source images will be rather easy. plus i'm always on a quest to create a viral trump that will make him look foolish and/or satanic.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 3 March 2016 22:53 (eight years ago) link

I might be interested in that. Kind of stopped making gifs myself (kind of stopped doing anything tbh) but maybe it'd rekindle the flame.gif

Trying to watch along but the stream is super-fractured. ;_;

emil.y, Friday, 4 March 2016 01:04 (eight years ago) link

shit! yeah i just glanced over to the stream on my ipad and it's 5 or 6 minutes delay! at least! i'll try to fix it. refreshing may temporarily help as well.

Karl Malone, Friday, 4 March 2016 01:12 (eight years ago) link

making adjustments and restarting in just a sec.

Karl Malone, Friday, 4 March 2016 01:14 (eight years ago) link

ok, i'm back in action. i'm also going to try to wrap this up by 9pm or so because i forgot the debate is on.

Karl Malone, Friday, 4 March 2016 01:18 (eight years ago) link

Can you do a feedback loop by holding up your ipad to stream the stream streaming streeeeeeaaaaaaam?

emil.y, Friday, 4 March 2016 01:20 (eight years ago) link

Trying to watch, but it's mostly buffer-spin.

WilliamC, Friday, 4 March 2016 01:40 (eight years ago) link

Ugh, I'm sorry. The lag is awful. I'll fix this before attempting. Ugh.

Karl Malone, Friday, 4 March 2016 01:43 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, it's still really lagging. I got all excited at the prospect of twitch inception and then it buffered for a ridiculous amount of time before you went "oh no actually, I can't". Such an anticlimax.

I am actually enjoying watching the gif-making process when it's working, though. I once tried to teach my friend how I make gifs, I think he thought it was going to be sparkly and fun and magic but it is in fact mostly fiddly and painstaking.

emil.y, Friday, 4 March 2016 01:47 (eight years ago) link

thanks for that, emil.y! also after some messing around with the settings i think i finally hit a combo that is decent quality and doesn't lag too much, and the audio/video still stays in sync. sorry i didn't have it working well earlier!
