Good to see such a healthy competition for this honor. An embarrassment of poverty, so to speak.

fisher and fox where they aren't "bad" but have been passed by.

who on this list is an indisputably great coach?

belichick, harbaugh, pete carroll ... anyone else? tomlin?

you can sort the rest into various categories but i feel like those 3 are the only ones who are up and down great w/ no caveats

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 6 October 2015 03:06 (eight years ago) link

Andy Reid, Rex Ryan

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 03:10 (eight years ago) link

Bruce Arians, too.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 03:10 (eight years ago) link

gtfo w/ rex
andy reid kinda sorta? he's at least in the vicinity but he never won anything
arians looks good so far but too early

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 03:13 (eight years ago) link

this is how i break it down to an extent

great coaches

Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll, John Harbaugh

probably good but slightly less trustworthy than the big 3

Rex Ryan, Ron Rivera, Mike McCarthy, Sean Payton, Andy Reid, Tom Coughlin, Marvin Lewis, Jason Garrett, Mike Tomlin

flashes of potential but ultimately unproven

Bruce Arians, Mike McCoy, Chip Kelly

flashes of potential but with team for <2 seasons

Dan Quinn, Mike Zimmer

literally have no idea what you do

Chuck Pagano

boring retread hires: the decent

John Fox, Gary Kubiak, Jack Del Rio, Ken Whisenhunt

boring retread hires: the bad

Jeff Fisher, Lovie Smith, Jim Caldwell

situations too horrible to judge: probably good

Bill O'Brien, Gus Bradley

situations too horrible to judge: probably bad

Jay Gruden, Mike Pettine

too soon to judge

Todd Bowles, Jim Tomsula

interim head coach of the miami dolphins

Dan Campbell

the real question is which of these guys can retire, go on a network pregame show and be called 'coach' for the rest of their lives

mookieproof, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 03:23 (eight years ago) link

john fox underrated there, better than some of the guys in that 2nd tier imo. horrible game manager but as good a defensive coach as anyone.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 03:24 (eight years ago) link

tomlin's in-game decisions get wacky but the dude's had pretty patchwork teams for a while and has them in the playoffs or in playoff contention in week 17 every year

but that's more in the andy reid class

yeah fox went to the super bowl w/ delhomme he's prob underrated

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 6 October 2015 03:24 (eight years ago) link

xp i mean sure but one of the qualifications of being a great coach is being a great in-game coach.

tomlin though, i don't think he even schemes anything, he seems like a cool boss who lets you do whatever you want while trusting you to be a good employee.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 03:27 (eight years ago) link

fox was an excellent coach, i think he's just old now

bill o brien seems fun to play for......

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 October 2015 16:28 (eight years ago) link

does anyone aside from pats fans or burned out jets fans objectively think rex ryan is a genuinely terrible coach?

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 16:37 (eight years ago) link

not terrible, but closer to mediocre than most people think

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 16:50 (eight years ago) link

it's tempting to say "it would be great to see rex coach a team with a competent offense" but at this point it seems like incompetent offense is part of the rex package

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 October 2015 16:58 (eight years ago) link

as is the undisciplined play, as is the constant talking, as is the three-year shelf life.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 17:04 (eight years ago) link

he prob shouldve stayed a DC for sure. (the shit-talking makes him an immensely enjoyable presence, tho.)

was expecting at least one ken whisenhunt vote but i suppose he has a past to fall back on and its not like he's had anything to work with in tennessee

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 17:09 (eight years ago) link

whisenhunts reign there is v weird. each season began w a fairly impressive road win........and otherwise he has one single victory over jax at home O_o

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 17:51 (eight years ago) link

I've been big on Rex for a while but watching a Fitzpatrick-led Jets team go to 4-1 while the Bills struggle mightily is changing my mind. Buffalo sure seems like a better team on paper.

frogbs, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 18:07 (eight years ago) link

honestly i like the jets personnel on defense a lot more than the bills. bills are maybe a little ahead on offense but not much.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 19:06 (eight years ago) link

Bills have lost to better teams.

earlnash, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 19:09 (eight years ago) link

jets got alot better elsewhere in the offseason iirc, hell tbh fitzpatrick over geno is an upgrade too
