Hey, Elvis Costello can still write a decent tune, and he puts on a mean live show these days peppered with all the good shit over his entire career. You must be crazy.

How about Yo La Tengo?

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Thursday, 6 July 2006 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

yo la tengo have some good songs and one or two classy albums even but to say that you "love" them suggests that your sum experience with the emotion consists of having made out with your hand a few times when you were 12

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 19:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm going to forgo discussion of my hand and revert to the Talking Heads. Who doesn't like 'em?

PEOPLE WITH TASTE

man i'm mainly kidding but come on, you can't offer up something like that seriously

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:02 (seventeen years ago) link

aside from the fact she can't sing or play an instrument

She learned to play guitar! Sorta! That counts for something...maybe not. I love Madonna.

Talking Heads I like ok, but I could take 'em or leave 'em really.

Elvis Costello had some great moments in his early years (77-83, '86 at a push) but the past fifteen or so years is one long stream of suckitude.

I nominate JIMMY CLIFF.

Arial Pink (account), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:22 (seventeen years ago) link

if that's supposed to be aimed at me (is it?), it's just kinda stupid to keep going on this because clearly the answer is "no," and so what's left is a bunch of dudes pointlessly announcing "hey, i like this band!" "hey! i like a different band!" ad nauseum. it's another lame list thread, except the listed items have nothing to do with each other. i mean, unless you actually think that EVERYONE loves elvis costello, which of course you don't!

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

lotsa coffee = needlessly combative, btw

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh please. You're enjoying this thread as much as the next guy. It's just a kid's game, and it's not gonna end until everyone picks up their marbles and leaves. Plus, you (not you specifically) can't help but WANT there to be some elusive artist that's universally loved.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm more mystified that people keep bringing up bands (Yo La Tengo, EC, Talking Heads, etc.) who have already been unceremoniously drummed out of the running... however yes, obviously the answer is "no" there is no band that everyone loves because there's always someone like Geir with a weird politico-aesthetic agenda who will refuse to see any value in a given canonical performer. With Geir its James Brown, with dance-lovin indie haterz its probably the Velvets or something...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:47 (seventeen years ago) link

has anyone tried ESG? they are very loveable.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 6 July 2006 21:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Of course (Shakey). And weird politico-aesthetic agendas aside, James Brown is still probably the closest any musical demi-god will ever come to being universally loved here.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Thursday, 6 July 2006 21:03 (seventeen years ago) link

yep

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 July 2006 21:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Deee-Lite, obviously.

On the basis that everyone can only remember one song by them, and everyone likes it, I'd go along with this.

I am pretty sure that everyone here like at least some of The Beatles' output. Doesn't mean they all love them though.

I don't like the Beatles.

I'm not sure whether I could say I love bands that I've never heard of, let alone heard.

But that doesn't mean they're automatically disqualified. What you need to do is listen to these bands and then say you don't love them.

Just before someone suggests Justin Timberlake, I'll come up with a big nooooooooooo from me. Even though "It's Gotta Be Me" and possibly even "Cry Me a River" were OK.

Is it possible for anyone to really really not enjoy anything about Queens Of The Stone Age?

(there's a brand new song playing on their site as of today, by the way - http://www.qotsa.com )

Does just one track count? I mean, I think I'd even be able to find single tracks by James Brown that I kind of enjoy.
