Οὖτις, Saturday, 26 September 2015 23:53 (eight years ago) link

its kinda amusing that extreme metal will be going up at the same time as hair metal. Will there be any overlap in voters?

and is it extreme metal songs or albums?

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 26 September 2015 23:56 (eight years ago) link

They arent happening at the same time afaict

Οὖτις, Sunday, 27 September 2015 00:18 (eight years ago) link

The two polls are gonna fight each other in the mall parking lot.

Frobisher, Sunday, 27 September 2015 00:40 (eight years ago) link

It will be albums, perhaps you might want to help me come up with a good description of what is extreme and what is not, CS?

Frobisher, Sunday, 27 September 2015 00:41 (eight years ago) link

hmmmm im no good at describing things but will try

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 27 September 2015 00:50 (eight years ago) link

that's ok... its up and running here:
EXTREME METAL Albums Poll - Nominations Round

I'm doing a nominations round first.

Frobisher, Sunday, 27 September 2015 01:28 (eight years ago) link

that's for the poodle metal poll!

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 27 September 2015 15:05 (eight years ago) link

pity the poor bands that will miss out on being allowed in both polls like priest, maiden..

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 27 September 2015 18:02 (eight years ago) link

black alnum and beyond metallica will be allowed in a hard rock/hair metal poll right? Will grunge acts be barred?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 27 September 2015 18:59 (eight years ago) link

put me down for a grunge poll I guess in 2018

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 27 September 2015 19:01 (eight years ago) link

Im hoping that regulars of the ballot poll thread who partake in most polls will try and take part in frobishers poll.

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 28 September 2015 18:52 (eight years ago) link

jf you can nominate and vote for your fave thrash

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 28 September 2015 19:04 (eight years ago) link

Nah, I'll pass.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 28 September 2015 19:12 (eight years ago) link

The metal poll seems to have stalled. Shall we move onto the next one?

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 22:05 (eight years ago) link

How many of these a month, two? So anything towards the bottom of the list is two+ years away?

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 23:27 (eight years ago) link

They happen so randomly now it's hard to predict, but yeah...AT LEAST two years.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 23:30 (eight years ago) link

you guys are so impatient

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 23:32 (eight years ago) link

rip polls

Exit, pursued by Yogi Berra (WilliamC), Wednesday, 7 October 2015 23:40 (eight years ago) link

I know, I know, #getalife, but I'm kind of sad an "ILM - 2010-2014 Tracks/Albums" rollout isn't happening this year.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Sunday, 18 October 2015 22:15 (eight years ago) link

Gotta see what my new job situation is like (I don't even know yet if I'll have internet access). We may get to that poll after all, though.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 18 October 2015 22:58 (eight years ago) link

not seen frobisher online much the past few weeks but I think he has problems with how to tabulate etc

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 18 October 2015 23:36 (eight years ago) link

Theres an excel template for that

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 October 2015 01:04 (eight years ago) link

What's up with the metal poll? Can we go to the next one?

kornrulez6969, Monday, 19 October 2015 12:59 (eight years ago) link

I feel like the queue was necessary and helpful when the poll craze first started taking off but now that things have mellowed out we could probably do a free-for-all, or pick a month and make that a free-for-all just to see if things get to crowded or if things would work out fine that way.

some dude, Monday, 19 October 2015 13:21 (eight years ago) link

in a free for all would people still have dibs on particular artists/genres? like, if someone was on the queue to do a Level 42 ballot poll but weren't able/inclined to run the poll any time soon would it be cool for someone else to start their own Level 42 ballot poll for example?

soref, Monday, 19 October 2015 15:27 (eight years ago) link

if the metal poll(s) is/are failing than Stephen Merritt is next obviously

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 October 2015 16:46 (eight years ago) link

by 'free-for-all' i meant that that people who called dibs on running a particular poll would still get to do that when they want to (or voluntarily hand it off to someone else)

some dude, Monday, 19 October 2015 16:51 (eight years ago) link

like, if that idea would result in a landgrab where people are like "hey this poll you were all prepared to do in 6 months, you should do it NOW NOW NOW or i will do it" then maybe forget i said anything

some dude, Monday, 19 October 2015 17:00 (eight years ago) link

i'm actually kinda open to this new idea though it should be probably be aired for a while in the interest of fairness. setting aside the issue of a long queue - which i think is just kinda, "that's the way it goes" even in the best case of no delays between polls (cause the polls themselves need to be a certain length of time to be fun) - - - the quarter-on-the-table system only works right if everybody really is queued up and ready, and has reasonable certainty of when their time comes up.

it might be that some version of open volunteering might work better, by placing the emphasis on who's ready to do their poll at a given time. like basically i think most of the delays come in just because at that particular moment, the person's busy at work, or moving, or traveling or whatever, so at best they could do the poll, but not well... but at the exact same moment it would have been the perfect time for somebody way down the list. of course, it would suck if it just became a form of queue-jumping for the people nearest the bottom, over people in the middle who feel like they've been following the rules and waiting their turn.

Gorefest Frump (Doctor Casino), Monday, 19 October 2015 17:10 (eight years ago) link

Is the hair metal poll not due up next? Surely that is something that might inspire frobisher to do the extreme metal poll.
Maybe he fears that none of you will vote in it and has cold feet incase it gets noone voting?

Usually people use these polls to learn about artists they arent familiar with so bone up on them and vote. Nobody doing that with extreme metal?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 19 October 2015 17:19 (eight years ago) link

it might be that some version of open volunteering might work better, by placing the emphasis on who's ready to do their poll at a given time.

I think this is otm and the way to work it going forward. Now that the doldrums have set in, the key to these things is enough enthusiasm and energy on the part of the pollrunner to goose the voters a bit.

Exit, pursued by Yogi Berra (WilliamC), Monday, 19 October 2015 17:23 (eight years ago) link

like, my biggest ILX fear is that my poll turn comes up at the wrong time in my life and becomes work rather than fun.

Gorefest Frump (Doctor Casino), Monday, 19 October 2015 18:01 (eight years ago) link

yeah...i did the classic rock poll at the exact time that i could plunge a bunch of time and effort into it but the entire year before or after that month would've been a total hassle

some dude, Monday, 19 October 2015 18:06 (eight years ago) link

when i do the Hendrix poll or any other future polls it'll feel like a breeze compared to what an undertaking the classic rock one was, though

some dude, Monday, 19 October 2015 18:07 (eight years ago) link

the classic rock poll was a high point of ILX though, thanks again

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 19 October 2015 18:43 (eight years ago) link

:)

some dude, Monday, 19 October 2015 18:51 (eight years ago) link

Can we just start a new poll? The metal one hasn't even started voting, they're still nominating.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 19 October 2015 19:13 (eight years ago) link

Nominations are closed, it's just that Frobisher's gone off to live his life like some sort of fvlse.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 19 October 2015 19:26 (eight years ago) link

maybe someone can tabulate for him?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 19 October 2015 20:11 (eight years ago) link

here's the spreadsheet for tabulating results:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wtyvbozifqfrtvn/ballot%20poll.xlsx?dl=0

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 October 2015 20:13 (eight years ago) link

i mean a person's poll is their poll, let frobisher come back whenever and start something else in the meantime.

Gorefest Frump (Doctor Casino), Monday, 19 October 2015 21:00 (eight years ago) link

seems like it should be one of these:

Stephin Merritt - Gukbe
Fairport Convention et al (R Thompson, S Denny) - Billy Dods
Nirvana - Gavin, Leeds
Can - Z S
Tom Petty - rogermexico
Jimi Hendrix - some dude

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 October 2015 21:07 (eight years ago) link

I vote Can.

:wq (Leee), Monday, 19 October 2015 21:11 (eight years ago) link

this is clearly all being driven by the level of enthusiasm of the poll runners, so it kinda doesn't matter what anyone "votes" if the poll runner isn't available/doesn't want to do it.

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 October 2015 21:13 (eight years ago) link

I want to do it! Thank you so much for posting that spreadsheet. Do you know where I find web form that thing people use for people to mail in their ballot?

Frobisher, Monday, 19 October 2015 21:47 (eight years ago) link

it must be in google docs somewhere?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 19 October 2015 21:49 (eight years ago) link

not sure what you're talking about

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 October 2015 21:50 (eight years ago) link

No webform to my knowledge, people just email you with whatever they think is the correct format/whatever format.
