You are talking to a dude who generally thinks 140 characters is plenty!

well, 1000 times 140 characters if you're being honest

I feel like all the bad press in this thread is only helping p4k get more hits

The Once-ler, Thursday, 24 September 2015 20:52 (eight years ago) link

...ILM could compile a better music review site than p4k and I hate our polls (and hive mind results)

The Once-ler, Thursday, 24 September 2015 20:55 (eight years ago) link

(a monkey with a typewriter could make a better music site so the standards aren't very high)

The Once-ler, Thursday, 24 September 2015 20:58 (eight years ago) link

nah i think pitchfork all in all has actually gotten pretty good, the site as a whole has improved dramatically over the years, it doesn't even feel like the same site that it did 5 let alone 10 years ago

marcos, Thursday, 24 September 2015 21:11 (eight years ago) link

I have axes to grind with it but it definitely is not the shitshow it was 10 years ago

Οὖτις, Thursday, 24 September 2015 21:12 (eight years ago) link

Its a circle jerk and their music taste is of a shitty p4k hive-mind

The Once-ler, Thursday, 24 September 2015 21:34 (eight years ago) link

idk if anything they have gotten broader in their coverage over th years, idk what is p4k's "music taste" in 2015? obv there is a bunch of stuff they don't touch at all but idg how it's a circle jerk nowadays lol

marcos, Thursday, 24 September 2015 21:57 (eight years ago) link

i mean i don't even listen to much if any current indie and I find enough stuff to read there

marcos, Thursday, 24 September 2015 22:01 (eight years ago) link

Pitchfork started to improve when Stylus colleagues joined.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 24 September 2015 22:05 (eight years ago) link

I mean I don't know I have my problems with P4K but at the same time it's ridiculous to say that they haven't made a concerted effort to do a better job of covering more non-indie genres like rap, metal, pop, dance music etc compared to when it was like 12 Rods and The Wrens worship

Ma$e-en-scène (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 24 September 2015 22:11 (eight years ago) link

the circle jerks have just gotten more inclusive. all are welcome.

tylerw, Thursday, 24 September 2015 22:12 (eight years ago) link

it's a big circle

Οὖτις, Thursday, 24 September 2015 22:14 (eight years ago) link

do we seriously have a 'novelty twitter account' style ilx poster who just posts spoonerisms? jesus that's depressing

some dude, Thursday, 24 September 2015 22:30 (eight years ago) link

I think the point of the FJM covers, at least in part, is that how we receive lyrics and lyrical meaning is strongly determined by performative context: TS's lyrics sound like LR lyrics once they're performed in a voice approximating his and all rambly and off-meter. Which is one aspect of why such radically transformative cover versions are often dickmoves (this is the purpose of him saying he's paying tribute to RA rather than TS herself).

The notion that the best way to introduce a streaming music service to women is to present it as an emotional dildo is confounding.

http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/905-op-ed-women-dont-need-a-man-to-make-their-mixtapes/

Interesting turn of phrase there.

That's way too long of a critique for what i assume is a stupid commercial

The Once-ler, Friday, 25 September 2015 00:29 (eight years ago) link

I guess it wouldn't be pitchfork if it wasn't longwinded.

The Once-ler, Friday, 25 September 2015 00:31 (eight years ago) link

some dudes been doing that for years with his usernames

okay, i just noticed this pairing on tiny mix tapes. bravo.

He's from Paterson, N.J., a place we would almost certainly not be talking about were it not for Fetty Wap

the "we" in that statement doesn't talk about poetry so the sentence is technically correct

(not in reference to this thread, per se, but the uptick in critics throwing around phrases like 'SJWs' in reference to articles they don't like is kind of startling and disconcerting)

TheFatSJW (D-40), Wednesday, 30 September 2015 19:41 (eight years ago) link

I def want to start a new thread about this because I think we've def crossed over into an era where "social justice" in music writing is being over-run by straight white men screeching I'M SO ENLIGHTENED at female writers' twitter accounts

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 19:44 (eight years ago) link

"era"

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 19:45 (eight years ago) link

so many eras of social justice in music writing, just can't keep track of them all

Why because she True and Interesting (President Keyes), Wednesday, 30 September 2015 19:57 (eight years ago) link

also in this era: the gopherguts practice of calling any post one disagrees with "SJW clickbait" (meanwhile, breitbart is A-OK and not trolling for clicks at all) without engaging with the content

marcos, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 20:27 (eight years ago) link

idgaf about the pitchfork piece i really have no idea what it is talking about but i think the term "SJW" is pretty gross and dismissive and i wouldn't use it myself

marcos, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 20:31 (eight years ago) link

even if i am kind of mildly annoyed by some things one might call "SJW clickbait"

marcos, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 20:32 (eight years ago) link

I mean sure I wish some pieces were a little longer on the substance but this sort of thing is a hop, skip and a jump from doxing someone for their opinions on fucking drake

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Wednesday, 30 September 2015 20:43 (eight years ago) link

yeah well "SJW clickbait" is ridiculous because it implies that social justice topics are things that bring people to music sites as opposed to loss-leaders for the greater good
