While Mottram was still playing professionally, he became known for his right-wing views. He expressed support for the National Front, supported the policies of Enoch Powell,[1] and applied, unsuccessfully, for the Conservative parliamentary candidacy in several constituencies.[1] He subsequently formed a songwriting partnership with the black entertainer Kenny Lynch writing the song Average Man.[2]

In November 2008, he was expelled from the UK Independence Party (UKIP) after attempting to broker an electoral pact with the British National Party. UKIP leader Nigel Farage called Mottram's offer "astonishing", declaring the party to be non-racist.[3]

sometimes I think about a sort of spinoff/cousin thread of jazz records whose titles are bad puns on the artists' names. Would be a long thread.

In my experience, this is because jazz artists tend not to give a rat's ass about anything other than the music itself -- song titles, cover art, etc. It's almost an entirely different motivation.

In the flash-forward category, 90s/00s pop-punk might be kinda shooting fish in a barrel, but even by those standards, I really have to give it up to the horribly-named Bowling For Soup, who have twelve studio albums (as many as the Beatles!) plus comps and EPs and basically it is just a beautiful parade:

1994 Bowling for Soup
1996 Cell Mates
1997 Rock on Honorable Ones!!
1998 Tell Me When to Whoa
2000 Let's Do It for Johnny!!
2002 Drunk Enough to Dance
2004 A Hangover You Don't Deserve
2005 Bowling for Soup Goes to the Movies
2005 On Your Mark, Get Set...Smoke a Cigarette (EP)
2006 The Great Burrito Extortion Case
2008 Bowling for Soup: Live and Very Attractive
2009 Sorry for Partyin'
2009 Merry Flippin' Christmas Volume 1
2009 My Wena (EP)
2010 Jaret & Erik 2010 UK Acoustic Tour Limited Edition CD
2011 Playlist: The Very Best of Bowling for Soup
2011 Fishin' for Woos
2011 Merry Flippin' Christmas Volumes 1 and 2
2011 The Dollyrots vs. Bowling for Soup
2012 One Big Happy (w/ The Dollyrots & Patent Pending)
2013 Lunch. Drunk. Love.
2014 Songs People Actually Liked – Volume 1 – The First 10 Years (1994–2003)

I used to own that Stray Dog album, I remember not a thing about it. I think the guitarist went on to do the theme music for Thirtysomething.

(there is a hole cut out of the outer sleeve exposing that photo which is printed on the inner sleeve, so you've got that going on as well as the shirts/sleeve wordplay)

It's kind of funny to interpret this as "strung in reverse." It's not like strings have a nut end and a tuner end.

They're doing a public service. You see anyone depicted on the cover of this album, run the opposite direction and you have a good chance to avoid contracting any uncomfortable diseases.

like 'black out' obviously, but is there another level to this that I'm missing? I can't help but feel there's some appalling joke that is going over my head. is he wearing a butchers apron? is that significant? this is a really good prog album btw

soref, Sunday, 4 October 2015 16:50 (eight years ago) link

well "brown outs" are also a thing in themselves. but i admit i was hoping it was a reference to a member named Brown who had been kicked out of the band.

Gorefest Frump (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 4 October 2015 16:53 (eight years ago) link

I hadn't heard of 'brown outs'! wikipedia has cleared this up anyway:

Morgan had signed a two-album deal with RCA, and in 1973 embarked on the recording of their second (and ultimately final) album, originally titled "Brown Out." The name of the album was later changed when it became apparent that the band intended to include an insert of the themselves mooning the casual record buyer.[1] Thus "Brown Out" became The Sleeper Wakes.

soref, Sunday, 4 October 2015 16:59 (eight years ago) link

wiki also notes that the singer went on to make models for the Thomas the Tank Engine TV series

soref, Sunday, 4 October 2015 17:01 (eight years ago) link

oh man original "brown out" cover concept is clearly one of the lost horrible masterpieces of this genre
