Actually it was merely a reference to the fact that Pursey is from Hersham, but the plot thickens:

He was a regular attender at the local disco, the 'Walton Hop' at the Playhouse theatre, where he met Jonathan King.

bit of sham triv: did you know the 'harry' of hurry up harry was actually cliff richard?

feargal czukay (NickB), Thursday, 10 September 2015 10:32 (eight years ago) link

When King was first convicted, Pursey appeared on Newsnight to talk about going to the Walton Hop and encountering King there (don't think he alleged that he'd been abused by King - more that it was the kind of place where all sorts of unsavoury activities occured)

Yeah, remember that one.

Mark G, Thursday, 10 September 2015 10:54 (eight years ago) link

I thought it was a reference to Jimmy Pursey being done for indecent assault himself tbh.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 10 September 2015 10:57 (eight years ago) link

Blimey, it's all coming out now.

Fields of Fat Henry (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 September 2015 10:58 (eight years ago) link

No, I think Colonel Poo is saying that he thought your previous comment implied Pursey had been 'done' for indecent assault. He hasn't been.

This piece by Jon Ronson on King includes comments from Pursey:

Errr, I'm not sure about that, the Colonel would have to answer for himself.

Fields of Fat Henry (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 September 2015 11:12 (eight years ago) link

No, I was referring to Jimmy Pursey being cautioned for indecent assault.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 10 September 2015 11:17 (eight years ago) link

When was that?

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 10 September 2015 11:17 (eight years ago) link

2002

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 10 September 2015 11:18 (eight years ago) link

Apologies for the misinterpretation

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 10 September 2015 11:19 (eight years ago) link

Well, I wasn't sure myself till I did a bit of googling.

Fields of Fat Henry (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 September 2015 11:21 (eight years ago) link

I think the Walton Hop itself is interesting because it's become one of those 'dark places' that seems to regularly reoccur within British society - Dolphin Square, Stoke Mandeville, Cromwell Road, Rillington Place etc

This book leapt out at me at work this morning:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51C-ZwClV-L._SX332_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Best described as a sort of freewheeling account of how Our Jim's deep Christian faith affects his approach to life, the opening sentences of the chapter, "How Do I Cope With Sex" caught my attention:

The word 'sex' is like the word 'love'. It means differing things to different people. Sex at its worst is corruption, as when young people might be corrupted to provide sex

Still available on Amazon, folks!

it's quoted from in several places in dan davies' savile bio in plain sight - the extracts were all creepy as fuck iirc

Interesting piece behind the FT paywall on the growing number of people over the age of 60 in prison, partly due to the prosecution of historical offences, and the impact it's having on prison life:

In 2015, the number of over-60s in jail topped 4,000 for the first time on record, more than double the figure 10 years ago. It is the fastest-growing age group in custody.

Two former members of 1960s band The Tremeloes have been accused of historical indecent assault.
Richard Westwood, 72, from Surrey, and Leonard Hawkes, 69, from Berkshire, have been summonsed to Chester Magistrates on 2 December, police said.
They will both face one count each of indecent assault relating to an incident in Chester in 1968.

Fred Talbot jailed for four years for sex offences on school trips to Scotland

Ian Brown gave testimony. Funnily enough, the ex-Fall drummer Simon Wolstencroft mentioned going on that same camping trip that the case was based around, but doesn't mention Fred or anything relating to what happened.

As an American I had only the vaguest sense who jimmy saville was and what he did, decided to correct that last year by reading In Plain Sight and I can't say I'm 'glad' I did, but he definitely fills a unique niche in the historical beast cabinet

A company has brought out a card game called ‘British Nonces’ similar to Top Trumps where you compete using cards with well known perverts, paedophiles and killers as the subject. The roster of 52 includes the likes of Jimmy Savile, Gary Glitter, Rolf Harris and late MP Cyril Smith. Categories for the game are as follows: physical threat, slipperiness, cockiness, offences, remorse and ‘nonceoriety’.
