"the only thing that's changed is that you can press harder and it does something different" didn't have the right ring apparently

tbh that feature works really well on my newer laptop, it's just that the OS does very little with it

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:02 (eight years ago) link

it's basically force touch, the same crap the macbook pro has. i disabled it

xp

F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:04 (eight years ago) link

lol how do you know the diff between it being enabled and disabled? I don't think you can completely disable it, as the trackpad does not at all click now. so if you click at all, you're using force touch

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:05 (eight years ago) link

mh oh you most certainly can. i actually really hate that feature

it's all in your trackpad settings i believe.

trust me. it's off!

F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:07 (eight years ago) link

turn off the laptop completely, then push on the trackpad
then turn it on, and click as normal

you will realize... you have been using force touch

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:08 (eight years ago) link

sorry man they made it so you can't not

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:08 (eight years ago) link

no, force touch meaning the more dynamic use. not the regular features that mimic a mouse with a left and right button

F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:08 (eight years ago) link

lol, one republic
this is what happens when you burn out U2

xp

F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:09 (eight years ago) link

oh, so you disabled the deep click part

it's still using the exact same vibration part, just on weaker mode

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:11 (eight years ago) link

you just angrily ripped the third button off your mouse

calstars, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:13 (eight years ago) link

mh

i recommend you go a week with it "disabled" (or turned off, like i say) and then compare how different it is

F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:13 (eight years ago) link

I like the new OS updates I don't have to pay for, they seem chill

also the only mention of OS X revision's release date was in an on-screen sample email, lol

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:13 (eight years ago) link

Probably requires handing in your old phone every year though

I could see iPad Pro as a truly great music production device.

yo infinity guy I never really use it anyway, since only safari seems to support it, and I have accidentally "force touched" a sum total of zero times

maybe you just click really hard?

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:14 (eight years ago) link

iPad pro seems... really big

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:15 (eight years ago) link

i think you've missed the many things you can do with it, bro

I think what irritates me most about all of these devices is the gradual move over the last couple decades toward a replace-every-few-years model for nearly everything, to the point that I almost feel like a tech subscriber rather than buyer. I also find the rapidity of the tech change itself less tolerable as I age.

the separate environment tvOS is really counterintuitive to me, can anyone suggest why they're doing that

what do you mean? It's a different kind of interaction so they need a different UX. It's all just forks of OS X under the hood.

go hang a salami I'm a canal, adam (silby), Thursday, 10 September 2015 00:17 (eight years ago) link

The diff "OSes" mostly refer to the different GUIs and availability of special APIs on each. Most of the programming interfaces are shared, it's just a different project target. I'd imagine most games wouldn't take a whole lot of changes outside of controls.

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 00:24 (eight years ago) link

but i don't WANT to be under the hood

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 10 September 2015 01:00 (eight years ago) link

new ipad mini seems like... maybe i finally take the plunge?

where the sterls have no name (s.clover), Thursday, 10 September 2015 01:37 (eight years ago) link

then why do you care they're different? xp

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 02:45 (eight years ago) link

Just imagine they are all the same, but there are a handful of components, which we'll call: A B C D E F
Watch OS uses AB and F
iOS uses ABCD, although D only works on iPads (something like multitasking view)
tvOS uses ABDE

So if I'm a developer and I have a library for other developers, it might apply to everything like AB does
If I want to extend an application I wrote, I can use common code for some bits, write a different GUI, and it now works on both iOS and tvOS
Otherwise you end up with stopgaps like the pixel doubling mode that lets you view phone apps on an iPad -- it works because the iPad has the right capabilities for the most part, but it's clunky.

Apple TV already has a stopgap mode, which is the AirPlay mirroring -- you just use it as a display for another iOS device. So basically multiple OSes make it so things work correctly, reduce errors and support needs, and gives you proper testing channels and verification -- they can run automated tools on app store submissions to make sure the API calls are the right ones

Android apps, mostly on rooted devices (which you could probably do on Apple devices, too) can run on other platforms they weren't meant for but it's hacky and a nightmare for developers getting crash logs from random shit they never wanted to support in the first place. I can understand someone wanting to, for example, play a game on Fire TV that is meant for an Android phone but encouraging the path of just shoving the same executable on every device is actually a lot more work than making a native version

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 02:58 (eight years ago) link

too long, do not read unless you are a developer, really

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 02:58 (eight years ago) link

short version: when you design an OS for all devices, whether it's touchscreen tablets or desktops, you get Windows 8

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 03:02 (eight years ago) link

mh, i was riffing on

It's all just forks of OS X under the hood.

but thanks for the full breakdown that's a lot clearer

also, i just played a little metal gear and i heard this post in the voice of the guy on my comms and processed it about as much.
