covers seems like a complicated nomination process which might not run well alongside the big 2000-2014 poll? but I dunno. obv maximizing fun is the point

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:21 (eight years ago) link

I'm not into the 2000-2014 poll idea but that's just me

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:24 (eight years ago) link

I'm into whatever will generate fun and/or interesting discussion & I think a retrospective poll will do that

I mean, we can talk about pitchfork's polls, or our own. the latter seems way more fun to me

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:26 (eight years ago) link

I'll wait untill the 15 year poll is done.

Covers will be relatively simple: any version of a song that's been previously released on record. So Elvis Presely singing Lieber and Stoller's Jailhouse Rock doesn't count, but Hound Dog would because that had been previously done by Big Mama Thornton.

I'd probably eliminate jazz and classical because that would get really complex, especially since technically classical recording is a cover.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:33 (eight years ago) link

also the demo version of Beethoven's 5th is unfuckwithable

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:36 (eight years ago) link

obv maximizing fun is the point

That's the main reason I left it to debate as to whether or not we do 2010-14 or 2000-14, because if nobody wants to do a 15 year retrospective then it won't be much fun. We (me, seandalai and gr80) are cool with going either way.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:57 (eight years ago) link

I'd vote for the 21st century poll instead of the last 5 years, which have kinda sucked for rockists like me

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 17:21 (eight years ago) link

15 years makes more sense to me as a sort of 'faves of the century so far' sort of deal. I think it would have more scope and possibly more variety. I reckon putting the focus on too narrow and recent a time span would mean that the poll would be dominated by stuff that people absolutely love right now that they will have forgotten in a year or two. There's always the EOY polls for that kind for thing.

ILM Top 100 2000-2004: ALBUMS
ILM Top 100 2000-2004: TRACKS
ILM Top 100 2005-2009: ALBUMS
ILM Top 100 2005-2009: TRACKS

I figure there's pushback on a retrospective poll since we already have an established practice of doing 5-year polls, and also because people don't want to slog through 15 years of music to put together a ballot. I'm split on it myself, even. But whichever way we end up going, it will probably look different than the results of the EOY polls.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 17:27 (eight years ago) link

we need to poll it

my ballot
1. 2000-14
2. 2010-14

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 17:40 (eight years ago) link

You'll probably end up including them anyway. >_>

:wq (Leee), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 20:17 (eight years ago) link

Happy for Fairport Convention to jump ahead - it's probably going to be a month or so before I've got the time free for the Nirvana poll.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 20:49 (eight years ago) link

I don't really believe we'll get much out of a last-five-year poll that isn't already in the EOY polls for those years. I'd even prefer a 2000-2009 poll over that.

List of people who are ready for woe and how we know this (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 23:00 (eight years ago) link

The "event" cache the EOY polls in the last five years have taken on is, I think, greater and more of a gathering for discussion than they were all through the 00s (that's no shade on how musically ran them, but I think we just like to talk a lot more at length about the results now than in the past). That's the reason I don't think a 2010-14 poll would offer as much as the 2000-04 and 2005-09 polls did, because we've talked the results of the last five years to death.

At the same time, I get how combing through 15 years of music is overwhelming. I have my own mixed feelings about taking that on, partly because it's just a lot of time and effort, but partly because I might realize I don't like something as much as I did eleven years ago and that'll be a disappointment. But whatever. There's probably at least as much that I'd like now that I didn't really get or appreciate at the time it was new.

Even though it would be harder to vote in, I'd still throw my hat in with people who want to do the 2000-14 retrospective poll. If the 2010-14 poll is what more people want to do, I'd get behind that too. I'd rather it be a good experience for everyone who votes than any kind of formal obligation.

I'm rooting for C Grisso to jump in and say "hey let's do Bacharach"

I just want something. The polls are always a good time so let's get going.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 26 August 2015 14:56 (eight years ago) link

I'd happily participate in either a 2000-2014 or 2010-2014 poll, but I'd prefer the latter.

Not yet! Having a rough month at the moment, a byproduct of which is me not getting started on my research (I know stuff, but want to know more...) before getting this one off the blocks. I'm excited to dive in!

Love, Wilco (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 26 August 2015 23:42 (eight years ago) link

Fairport Convention next?

i'd be happy to get Queen underway soon, given that the results might actually coincide with me having a stretch of free time.

yes

hardcore dilettante, Saturday, 5 September 2015 03:59 (eight years ago) link

The half-decade/decade=and-a-half poll is on indefinite hiatus because a) there's no agreement on which it should be and b) my life is too weird and unpredictable right now to run a major poll.

That being the case, the path is clear for whoever wants to run whatever.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 5 September 2015 04:18 (eight years ago) link

Cool. I'll get the Metallica one going this weekend.
