I know of about a dozen or so people with Apple watches in my IT department. Out of 200 people.

xpost Yeah, ugh, I know two tech guys with Apple watches, but I think most of the people I've seen wearing them looked liked JE Bush, i.e. someone just taught them to use the internet within the past year or so.

I will say, not long before the introduction of the Apple watch I started wearing my real watch again, and that really did the trick. It's amazing how often I was taking out my phone to check the time.

I was actually predicting it to be a success and my mind got sort of changed over a very small point that was made in a video review I saw (maybe the WSJ's or the Times' review?), which is that in order to use effectively it you have to look at your watch a lot, and looking at your watch a lot comes off as rude. Suddenly the whole concept seemed incredibly annoying to me, and also it meant that the watch doesn't really save you from the annoyance of pulling out your phone all the time, it actually replaces it with a new annoyance.

Nonetheless, still feel like subsequent generations of the watch could become more compelling

I think the watch will make many billions of dollars over the next decade or so, probably market will grow for a couple years and plateau like iPad sales have, and the Watch's long-term strategic importance to Apple will be:

- China (Tim Cook's favorite place)
- still more supply chain and fabrication refinement learning (Tim Cook's favorite activity)
- product line helping to pay for R&D on low-power, high-density SOCs and tiny high-density batteries (super important)

yeah im just not seeing what the must have usecase is, and the screen will never be big enough to replace yr phone, having yr phone in yr pocket is good too, ppl dont aprecite the value in putting something away, same as with google glass

lag∞n, Friday, 24 July 2015 02:08 (eight years ago) link

like a lot of what the watch does is tell u to look at yr phone lol

Tim Cook for all that he's the white male CEO of the most profitable company on earth probably isn't fucking around when he says he thinks Apple can make stuff that makes the world a better place, probably more honest abt this than SJ was.

I don't know Apple's market share/penetration in the Global South but when ppl who never had PCs will increasingly be having smartphones or smart-next-things Apple won't ignore that opportunity forever just to maintain their high avg selling price

it's a cute tiny screen, when I poked one at the apple store I was pleased by touching it, also the display tech is OLED (unadvertised) which again plays into the "hey we can experiment with this stuff for future products and make a bundle selling gold ones to Russian oligarchs" cashflow plan

Apple won't ignore that opportunity forever just to maintain their high avg selling price

There's a rather long record of Apple actually doing just that--current strategy of lowering the price of lower tech (previous versions of iDevices) to serve the non-high average selling price. And winning big in China over the past year isn't going to dampen Apple's enthusiasm for a strategy that has made them a top 5 company by market cap. In fact there is significant shareholder demand to continue keeping the average selling price up. Apple is an aspirational brand and it continues to dominate its rivals (Android in the platform, Samsung in hardware) and increase marketshare. Hard to change corporate direction with that kind of momentum.

all good points, really. I know that the pundit demands for a "cheap iPhone" were ludicrous in their context at the time but otoh, y'know, barring global socioeconomic regression triggered by climate disaster, folks in Lagos are gonna be after iPhones too and they might be missing an opportunity by not meeting that market in the middle? IDK I'm fucking around I know terrifyingly and inexcusably little about Africa

i have thus far seen a single person wearing an apple watch. he said his parents bought it for him and it was "okay (he) guess(ed)".

idk remember when the mp3 player market was all clunky and diverse, creative nomads that looked like a discman but weighed twice as much, iPod came along and was still a wrapper over a moving disk hard drive (back before sudden motion sensors even, ugh) and suddenly ppl were like, hey, I guess there is maybe something to this

Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 24 July 2015 13:58 (eight years ago) link

but is the apple watch actually better than all the other smartwatches that have been out for the last couple of years?

Nhex, Friday, 24 July 2015 14:29 (eight years ago) link

I have only owned three such devices so I can't speak definitively

Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 24 July 2015 14:34 (eight years ago) link

my coworker with an android-based watch he no longer uses was explaining much integration was possible but very manual. believe it was a high end one of the recent generation

Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 24 July 2015 14:36 (eight years ago) link

I would still bet that Apple's smartwatch is the best and most user-friendly

five six and (man alive), Friday, 24 July 2015 14:38 (eight years ago) link

I am not quite to an "it's good" endorsement

Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 24 July 2015 14:41 (eight years ago) link

If you're already heavily invested into the apple ecosystem, then yes, it's going to be the best.

Jeff, Friday, 24 July 2015 14:44 (eight years ago) link

I just love the cycle of bigger smartphones that keep growing until they maximize practical screen size and then introducing a tiny little screen for your wrist that accesses your now giant cell phone. Eventually phones will grow to the size of computers, the watch will grow to the size of current phones, and they'll have to introduce something small to access your watch and phone and computer.

funny thing about the watch is it's such a limited, semi-sealed system right now. there are a bunch of applications that use it, but I haven't seen many that are introducing brave new interaction schemes or anything

so websites are writing doofy articles like "whoa did you know the side button can do all these things"

tbh the best part of it is you can ignore it 99% of the time and it's there passively monitoring and reacting

Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 24 July 2015 19:22 (eight years ago) link

if you could (can?) use it for public transit passes it would be nice since I don't want to have my phone super easily accessible on the metro etc, and I've had my card pickpocketed before too

otoh I could just get pants with a pocket zipper

I hate watches

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 24 July 2015 19:27 (eight years ago) link

yeah the payment/card stuff is super easy, double-click the button and hold it up and away you go

brb going to go buy a soda that way

Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 24 July 2015 19:30 (eight years ago) link

best argument against it is prob how joyfully ppl gave up their regular watches once they acquired a cell phone

decent amount of speculation that there will be an update to the 5/5S form factor. that's what i'm hoping for.

it's true though, no one wants to use a stylus for all interaction, but having no native stylus option for all the shit you need one for is less than optimal

maybe they'll do this voice search thing better than Amazon but it was pretty useless on the Fire TV
