the Wyatt Cenac episode is great so far, but his recounting of his family stuff is exactly the same as on The Champs (which, of course). he's still a hero to me in a 'cutting people completely out of your life' way.

lil urbane (Jordan), Friday, 24 July 2015 13:49 (eight years ago) link

yeah, the first half is very similar to his Champs interview, but the second half is why there are hundreds of articles about him online today.

Most Scientifically Beautiful Face (President Keyes), Friday, 24 July 2015 13:55 (eight years ago) link

kind of crazy that this came out on the same day the Daily Show had the actual Chuck Schumer on to play a stereotype, and TNC (who gets weirdly disappeared at the end of the show)

Most Scientifically Beautiful Face (President Keyes), Friday, 24 July 2015 14:18 (eight years ago) link

lol, i guess i should listen to the rest then.

lil urbane (Jordan), Friday, 24 July 2015 14:23 (eight years ago) link

Finally getting to the Wyatt Cenac episode, and it's great and kind of heartbreaking to hear about the stuff with his dad and mom. And Jon Stewart.

Sinbad episode is one of the worst ever, what a total punisher

let no-one live rent free in your butt (sic), Friday, 31 July 2015 09:11 (eight years ago) link

Ouch. I might have to listen just to see how long I can hang.

a poetic ODE to FORNICATION (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 31 July 2015 09:15 (eight years ago) link

an hour and a half of breathless run-on monologuing about he was the funniest guy ever, and famous people telling him how funny he was, and how much smarter he was than everyone, except for some people telling him to tone it down occasionally because not everything is all about him, because they were JEALOUS FOOLS with HUGE EGOS, and he was the funniest thing ever on that stage or show or movie or that other guy's career

and Maron getting swept up and affirming him, once every 12 minutes, when he could get a syllable in

let no-one live rent free in your butt (sic), Friday, 31 July 2015 09:16 (eight years ago) link

all without ever saying one thing funny in the whole interview iirc

Wow.

a poetic ODE to FORNICATION (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 31 July 2015 09:18 (eight years ago) link

it was kind of a standard issue 90s rapper interview on Combat Jack

Why because she True and Interesting (President Keyes), Friday, 31 July 2015 13:44 (eight years ago) link

I actually felt bad for Wyatt Cenac's Mom listening to that episode - it seemed like a lot of what she was doing that bothered her son was a reaction to losing her ex so tragically. What a sad story.

Your Ribs are My Ladder, Saturday, 1 August 2015 09:53 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, I kind of agree. also it seemed she has been making bungled attempts to reach out to him, but he isn't interested in meeting her even half-way anymore. I'm not in his shoes of course, so what do I know. It's sad all over.

Harmony Korine interview was nice. He mentioned being sick of Americana denim-and-banjos.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 00:05 (eight years ago) link

xp I've learned not to project my own experience onto people who talk about less than perfect relationships with parents. My family might as well be the Cleavers, but I know that's not true for everyone. If Wyatt says he wants his mom out of his life, he has his reasons.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 00:14 (eight years ago) link

xpost yeah that Americana diss was more evidence that HK is a dumbass

Why because she True and Interesting (President Keyes), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 10:42 (eight years ago) link

If I had to choose between beards, denim and banjos or Harmony Korine I think I'd just walk away and find better things to do.

a poetic ODE to FORNICATION (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 11:05 (eight years ago) link

I think Harmony has some compelling idea and Marc not getting him at all was hilarious

rip van wanko, Friday, 7 August 2015 17:59 (eight years ago) link

finally listened to the Cenac interview, the Stewart stuff was interesting, esp Maron gently counselling *him* to release a little of the resentment & go to the finale.
lot of deep stuff tied up in that one
it was interesting

Got the Attempting Normal audiobook from the library - kind of shocking how many stories are repeated on 'This Has To Be Funny,' 'Thinky Pain,' the book and his TV show - the book fleshes them out and has some other stories, but big chunks are verbatim from his albums and/or show. Still funny but it might be time to work on new material.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 11 August 2015 22:25 (eight years ago) link

he has material?

some dude, Tuesday, 11 August 2015 22:27 (eight years ago) link

He focused more on "material" back in the old days (Not Sold Out is one of my favorite sets ever to be released as an album), but in the years since—after doing radio and then a podcast—it feels like his standup is just an extension of (or a brainstorming session for) how he wants to write his autobiography.

i love harmony korine so much

gr8080, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 15:00 (eight years ago) link

I've enjoyed the run of Maron as kind of an amiably decent show without huge ambitions, but the two-part season finale (particularly the final episode) was kind of great. The storyline diverts from the semi-autobiographical tone of episodes past into a tale of Maron getting hooked on oxycontin in the lead-up to filming a talk show pilot. Hilarious and a little harrowing. It's nice to see Maron's comedic chops outside of just saying stuff that Maron would say. Written by Jerry Stahl, definite Permanent Midnight vibes.

the WTF archives are now on a $3.99/month subscription.

Only for new subscribers, not previous WTF subscribers, and it includes everything else on Howl Premium and Howl Originals tbf (two new Lapkus shows would be exciting if With hadn't been so spotty.)

so many lol Maron-isms in today's episode--

great one from the Bogdanovich episode: being startled and aghast to learn that Orson Welles did not have a decades-long career of Hollywood hits. "What?!"

from his blog today about his Dublin visit - "I did spend some time in the black neighborhood. It’s basically a statue of Phil Lynott downtown." That's the first time I've heard Grafton Street being described as a black neighborhood.
