Thread has generally been great lately but "Tromboneliness" is one for the ages. I can only imagine it's a whole album of sad-trombone.

I have an Amy Schumer-esque "I can't decide if she's hot" internal dialogue going every time I see old pics of Bette Midler

If hot means that guy from Twisted Sister, then yes.

was going to mention that the cover of 'Wringing Applause' = the only picture of B.A. Robertson I've ever seen where he looks sort of hot

Bizarrely this was released on Ardent Records, and seems to have been at least partly recorded at Ardent Studios, hence the involvement of Terry Manning... yet it was produced by Georg Kajanus, later frontman of Sailor! I want to hear it now!

BA Robertson's career always seems little incomprehensible but imo it's just that he was a good networker. He seemed to be able to surround himself with super-session men - Herbie Flowers, Davy Graham, the guys from AWB, Billy Livsey, Steve Harley's band and so on. The connection with George Kajanus is that he and Robertson shared the same music publisher, Steve Morris Music. Seems like there is a lot of cross-pollination between a pretty lacklustre roster of artists - Robertson, Kajanus, Stephen Bishop, Yvonne Elliman (who also recorded at Ardent). They recorded each others songs, did a duet or two etc. eg. Robertson did a heinous vocal cover of ABBA's Arrival with Frida on the same album that Stephen Morris wrote a song or two.

It's a little embarrassing that I know even vague details of all this btw.

it's actually quite good... if you like solo trombone improv! think mangelsdorff has a few titles that wouldn't be out of place here.

Possibly Fingers (Tom D.), Sunday, 26 July 2015 22:16 (eight years ago) link

I did a search before posting and couldn't find it, but it does looks sort of familiar, so maybe? we really need a masterlist of horrible 70s album titles so we can avoid this kind of confusion

Lol, when I first saw that I was pretty sure it must be your doing. Perhaps you can catch up by posting a Clem Cattini solo effort, if such a thing exists.

We have definitely had that one (xp) Once you've seen that sleeve it's hard to get it out of your head.

I did this today! My friend wants me to contribute to something he's writing, and after agreeing he told me to "get on it then", to which I replied with Mr. Wood's words.

I found one last weekend but it is from '82, which should be ok as there are a few 80s LPs on here.

Todd Rundgren - The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect

Steppenwolf "For Ladies Only" and "Steppenwolf At Your Birthday Party" are a bit odd. The Euro cover on "For Ladies Only" definitely fits in with some of these on the thread.

I'd love to watch a cartoon based around characters in this band who go around in a van playing shows and solving mysteries.

oh god, "For Ladies Only" is horrrrrid

Gorefest Frump (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 15 August 2015 00:32 (eight years ago) link

Incidentally, now that it's catching on as an expression - - - in what tone do we imagine Wood expressing this sentiment? I've never taken it as indignant (though it works beautifully for that) but rather more of a "wellp, I guess it's my turn, here we go!" Really it should have been a Ringo Starr title, he has the right "oh, good ol' Ringo" quality about him.
