This guy sounds like an unbelievable tool.

Really? I'm enjoying the voice. A nice surprise, since I mainly remembered him as the guy who blurbed "The Fragile" in their best of '99 issue, describing it as "the hard bulletin."

geoffreyess, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:09 (eight years ago) link

His 1989 book is very good. Not so crazy about these tweets.

CHAPTER SEVEN

After a couple days we head back downtown. The subways are running again. GWB has told us that we need to shop for America. The planes still aren't flying and I have to rebook my flight back to France. First I reschedule my Spin meeting. Breaking up is hard. I schedule the meeting for a week later and then rebook my ticket home.

I feel like the oddity of having flown into NYC on a caprice a day before 9/11 means I am probably a terrorist. This feeling will last for weeks, months. Its a time of paranoia. I miss four days of running, first time in a dozen years. When I start running again along the East River I keep seeing planes diving toward me from the corner of my eye & panic. Can't stop thinking about the air toxicity which is a real thing but also a figure for the ambient fear gripping people. I visit the memorials in union square above the closed zone but i dont find them moving, just disturbing.

Its a historical genre, right? The periods when the line blurs between the missing and the dead. i think about Chile. People start to attack Muslims, possible Muslims taxi drivers shopkeepers people in turbans. Seriously, fuck the human spirit. Some days at least. Fiends go back to getting together, little dates, everything feels furtive, drinking starts at noon.

It is a lost time. But the CDs come out, delayed a week. Tori, The Blueprint. But The Coup has its own special delay. Because The Coup original cover shows them blowing up the WTC. That's what they sent me back in June. So the review is on the street saying The Coup and I want you to throw a brick through the window of Spin offices. But the CD is nowhere to be found because they are having to print new covers and now finally it is time. It is time for me to go into the offices I have suggested get bricked & walk into the managing editor's office and quit.

you can kinda see why he didn't just plop this on wordpress

rip to his exercise routine, never forget

nomar, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:25 (eight years ago) link

i mean, as far as a memoir using 9/11 as a backdrop about the time you quit a music critic goes, it's not bad. but i can see why he chose a more dramatic medium.

da croupier, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:26 (eight years ago) link

a music critic gig, rather

idk jeet heer can flying leap but i love shit like this

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 20 July 2015 17:28 (eight years ago) link

also if this all winds up being part of a larger memoir - Call Me Jane, perhaps - it'll be easier to suggest its built off viral heat

nb i own the mayor emannuel book so i'm a sucker

hey, anytime someone gets melodramatic about the Rock Crit Life my narcissism of small differences perks up. i'm certainly not sad he wrote it.

Hope this contract he's going on about didn't include a NDA. Could Spin even afford to hire a lawyer at this point?

Position Position, Monday, 20 July 2015 18:52 (eight years ago) link

Spin dissolved and formed a new company, really doubting any NDA from ca. 2001 would hold

lil dork (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 July 2015 18:57 (eight years ago) link

the talk of spin threatening billing him for 16k in chapter ten would probably be scarier if i didn't know he'd live to tell the tale

da croupier, Monday, 20 July 2015 19:10 (eight years ago) link

should've added a frame story

I'm not really buying tweets 171-174 where he says he's being punished to the tune of 16k for a tossed off line in a Coup review.

lil dork (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 02:54 (eight years ago) link

That's not the end. Here's the whole thing:

https://twitter.com/bookofriot Haven't talked to him in a while but congenial etc also a really good poet

dow, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 13:39 (eight years ago) link

I'm saying I'm not really buying the narrative that SPIN pursued the $16k out of some sense of malice for what he said in that review, as opposed to like, the many other reasons a company might pursue money from someone

lil dork (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 15:01 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, somebody else might (may) tell it quite differently, and even in his version, looks like everything turned out okay (oops spoiler).
