Love this album. Love his "Louie, Louie," used to good effect (iirc) in "Blood Simple."

Swag OTM on the greatest hits things. I didn't even know it was a comp until many years later. And I have fond memories of singing along to "Sailin' On" with my college roommate in our dorm one night.

The fact this is a comp makes me wonder why a few more great Maytals songs weren't included — "Sweet and Dandy," "54-46," "Monkey Man," "Bla Bla Bla," etc. I'm guessing this was intended as an intro into the U.S. market in the wake of "The Harder they Come" movie.

I should go deeper with the Maytalls. I like all the songs of theirs that I know, and 'Funky Kingston' itself is amazing.

Not big on reggae but this is probably my favorite album in that genre - title track is outstanding

I have my dad's copy of the 1975 version, and years back I actually thought it looked pretty boring and almost put it up for sale, but figured I should give it a quick spin - it's been in rotation since

This always struck me as much of an R&B/soul album as reggae, which is probably why its appeal is so universal. And Toots is one of my favorite singers ever, in any genre.
