I got the impression that he's alone or in the other room or wahtever. The song works because it summons the anticipation of a possible fuck and evokes the bliss state of the next morning. Not many songs do both.

Remember the explicit version, you guys

yeah the best thing about that song and miguel in general - and what the remix got so disastrously wrong - is that he gets why fucking is amazing, and also why the non-fucking bits of the night or the relationship are amazing as well

Since when is "We talk street art and sarcasm/ crass humor and high fashion/ bubble bath, truth or dare/ and would you rather / a cold flame, the thrill of no shame/ drugs, sex, and polaroids" a good lyric? These people are scum.

this is how conversations that may lead to sex usually go?

only skimmed through this new album so could be totally wrong of course but as with the last album, miguel is one of my favourite singers of anyone right now, but lyric-wise, he is often just ridiculous/moronic/vacuous/just plain nonsensical and confused. that pitchfork interview also left me no wiser. i cant tell if he occasionally likes to make himself sound more bro-like than he actually is, or maybe he really just is, which is maybe worse (its also just an awkward fit with his free spirit sort of image). but what a singer. might be alone in this but the way he projects his voice makes me think of jeff buckley a lot (use me from the last album was also very jeff buckley to me).

ah well, insert this between gunplay and annie:

are "Adorn," "Arch n Point," "what's normal anyway," "face the sun," and "Sure Thing" moronic?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 6 July 2015 23:04 (eight years ago) link

I don't mind nonsensical! Sex is nonsensical.

fyi i think the album version of coffee has 'fucking in the morning' in the last 30 second outro

also i think the version of the coffee single i bought is no longer on itunes?? lol (it's clean and also doesn't have wale)

, Monday, 6 July 2015 23:18 (eight years ago) link

thrilled that i apparently have a #rare #coffee

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 6 July 2015 23:21 (eight years ago) link

you're right. I wondered why that was marked as Explicit

rob, Monday, 6 July 2015 23:22 (eight years ago) link

actually there's a clean version of wildheart up on itunes too so you can probably just get it that way

, Monday, 6 July 2015 23:26 (eight years ago) link

might be alone in this but the way he projects his voice makes me think of jeff buckley a lot (use me from the last album was also very jeff buckley to me).

i immediately compared "flesh" to jeff buckley

i like his lyrics generally though. his bro-like aspects are v californian, but they're more place than personality, and/or the two are inextricable

anyway he often gets very precise details of dating/relationships/sex completely right in a kind of earnest dorky and charming way, this is everything i like about miguel

is miguel going to be like the male fka twigs? 'he gets sex EXACTLY right'

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 7 July 2015 09:19 (eight years ago) link

My only problem with that first verse of "Coffee" is it feels like a retread of "Do You" ("rock paper scissors WAIT best out of three" etc).

The Reverend, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 01:58 (eight years ago) link

yeah it always totally reminded me of that too. i like both a lot tho.

I have just learned from twitter that there are a lot of people who have it in for Miguel and I'm just like

The only lyrical thing that bums me out on the album is Kurupt's verse on NWA, because he makes 'hyenas' sound like 'anus' twice, and um Lee Iacocca

Your Ribs are My Ladder, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 09:32 (eight years ago) link

ha, I just figured out what the guitar on "goingtohell" reminds me of: "Sara Smile"

he's not as good as Frank Ocean, c'mon

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 11:42 (eight years ago) link

I didn't know Frank Ocean had stans like that

Hikikomori Povich (tsrobodo), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 12:18 (eight years ago) link

you have no idea

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 13:06 (eight years ago) link

Channel Orange sold about twice as much as Kaleidoscope Dream. Miguel is on the radio more but Frank has more diehards.

some dude, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 13:44 (eight years ago) link

and a percentage of those Ocean fans revere him because he's admitted to same sex feelings thus is a hero and different from other R&B artists.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 13:50 (eight years ago) link

It's such a boring and arbitrary "feud" since I wouldn't even imagine either of them occupying the same lane musically. It's like comparing Trey Songz to The Weeknd.

Greer, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 14:10 (eight years ago) link

this feud is infuriatingly reductive and everyone blaming miguel for stoking it should have an issue with the reporter who asked the question in the first place

maura, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:11 (eight years ago) link

(also i find frank ocean's thing pretty snoozy tbh.)

maura, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:11 (eight years ago) link

but like why does the media have to set up a FITE between two artists of color who are defying boundaries? it's almost as if their minds are B L O W N by the idea that two non-cishet white bros can balance artistic and commercial success without canceling each other out!

(also as meaghan garvey pointed out this whole thing leaves out dawn richard, who is also on their level, but maybe these unimaginative writers can only engage in one othering act at a time)

maura, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:19 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, way too many outlets reporting on this feud whose R&B music coverage is otherwise lacking or nonexistent.

Greer, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 15:29 (eight years ago) link

i am glad my reading doesn't take me to any place where such a "feud" is happening

dawn put out a better album than either of these guys tbh

― like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu)

yeah

Well, and once again, it doesn't occur to critics that they can compare male artists to female ones.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:34 (eight years ago) link

Despite numerous efforts and liking a few songs on various EPs of hers, I still find Dawn largely impenetrable, but agree with the sentiment that there's plenty of other interesting things going on in the genre that don't get talked about whole folks bicker back and forth about Miguel versus Frank.

Greer, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:41 (eight years ago) link

But maybe this is all more suited to the general R&B thread.

Greer, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 16:42 (eight years ago) link

after "what's normal anyway" this album is perfect

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 8 July 2015 17:05 (eight years ago) link

to me the big separator b/w this and KD is that KD kinda loses its plot halfway through. the songs individually are pretty good but there's nothing really unifying them, and the album kinda just peters out

this one ends so strongly that when i'm done w/ it i'm just like "damn"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 8 July 2015 17:07 (eight years ago) link

I like the quiet no frills opener but "DEAL" and "The Valley" are still slogs. "NWA" is OK. The rest is gravy. "face the sun" makes me feel happy all over.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 17:11 (eight years ago) link

yeah i'd agree with that - i relistened to KD the other day and had completely forgotten how front-loaded it is (but, as you say, not because the songs in the back half are bad per se)

"what's normal anyway" seems anomalous but i'm thinking it might be the heart of the album in some ways? if the first half of the album is the roleplay to the back half's pure feeling (obv only in a rough sense, not song-by-song accurate)

xp

lex pretend, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 17:12 (eight years ago) link

I was surprised to learn that "what's normal anyway" wasn't a solo composition.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 July 2015 17:15 (eight years ago) link

damn i hadn't even looked at the credits yet -- are the wikipedia ones right? benny blanco & cashmere cat worked on "...goingtohell" ??? so random

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 8 July 2015 17:32 (eight years ago) link

also, "flesh" is miguel, raphael saadiq and.... jai paul's brother?
