Was wondering how many episodes it will be until he doesn't mention the President in one.

Have some trepidation about the Laura Jane Grace interview, because Maron is historically contemptuous or flippant about things that confuse him, often with no ill will intended, but it's still uncomfortable. Hope I'm proven wrong.

It's a really good interview until he gets to the topic of transgender/transphobia/etc. Laura Jane Grace is a better person than I am to put up with Marc's creepy idiocy.

Tbh Maron handled it a lot better than I expected after that terrible intro.

He just fixates on the stupidest minutiae, in a way where he acts like he's brave for bringing it up but instead it's like "dude dont say that out loud, its dumb"
That stuff undermines his intentions, which I think *are* mostly good,. If he stuck to the emotional conversation, trusted the curiosity ... if wishes were horses etc

Fixating on the clothing was like dude whyyyyyyy stop no argh

And Laura was considerably more patient than she had any right to be, hats off to her for real

But then again maybe someone like Maron *trying* to have the conversation and half-succeeding is better than not at all...and who knows, he may get a portion of his listeners to think about trans issues differently, even if it's not an ideal conversation

Maron is, effectively, a dad or the uncle you avoid talking to. Well-meaning but totally bumblefuck when he opens his mouth.

Also, I know his TV show is almost unwatched in here so I'll just point out that last episode had him screwing a college girl and several characters reiterating statements along the lines of "Marc, what you're doing is AMAZING, man, no one's ever done what you're doing."

An edgy but also worshipful college girl.

I was never a fan of his show but I think Season 3 is a big improvement. The episode about making a baby for a lesbian couple was hilarious. I haven't seen the episode that Gott Punch is referring to tho. Yeesh.

it was like a weird Maron fantasy

this season has been great until the last two eps

college girl didn't seem to be too sincere about her admiration tbh

College student character just seemed like a weird plot device wrapped in some half-remembered "college chick" from Maron's distant past to me.

Waste of Adam Goldberg in this episode, too.

yeah this was good, prob the best episode of the show I've seen (and I can't bring myself to watch all that many of them)

I liked the Ian McKellan interview, too! Can you imagine having an actor of his ability and gravitas breaking that Shakespeare out three feet from your face? Holy shit!

I don't think he's told the Jon Stewart story before, because it would've been bigger news. Now it's going to be in 3...2...

I enjoyed the McKellan interview. I'm listening to his Nerdist one now where hes a bit pissed off, probably cos Hardwick arrived late and never apologized.

the Wyatt Cenac episode is great so far, but his recounting of his family stuff is exactly the same as on The Champs (which, of course). he's still a hero to me in a 'cutting people completely out of your life' way.

yeah, the first half is very similar to his Champs interview, but the second half is why there are hundreds of articles about him online today.

kind of crazy that this came out on the same day the Daily Show had the actual Chuck Schumer on to play a stereotype, and TNC (who gets weirdly disappeared at the end of the show)

Finally getting to the Wyatt Cenac episode, and it's great and kind of heartbreaking to hear about the stuff with his dad and mom. And Jon Stewart.

Sinbad episode is one of the worst ever, what a total punisher

an hour and a half of breathless run-on monologuing about he was the funniest guy ever, and famous people telling him how funny he was, and how much smarter he was than everyone, except for some people telling him to tone it down occasionally because not everything is all about him, because they were JEALOUS FOOLS with HUGE EGOS, and he was the funniest thing ever on that stage or show or movie or that other guy's career

and Maron getting swept up and affirming him, once every 12 minutes, when he could get a syllable in

all without ever saying one thing funny in the whole interview iirc

I actually felt bad for Wyatt Cenac's Mom listening to that episode - it seemed like a lot of what she was doing that bothered her son was a reaction to losing her ex so tragically. What a sad story.

Yeah, I kind of agree. also it seemed she has been making bungled attempts to reach out to him, but he isn't interested in meeting her even half-way anymore. I'm not in his shoes of course, so what do I know. It's sad all over.

She sounds disturbed, and if half of what he says is true he should keep away from her

Harmony Korine interview was nice. He mentioned being sick of Americana denim-and-banjos.

xp I've learned not to project my own experience onto people who talk about less than perfect relationships with parents. My family might as well be the Cleavers, but I know that's not true for everyone. If Wyatt says he wants his mom out of his life, he has his reasons.

If I had to choose between beards, denim and banjos or Harmony Korine I think I'd just walk away and find better things to do.

I think Harmony has some compelling idea and Marc not getting him at all was hilarious

finally listened to the Cenac interview, the Stewart stuff was interesting, esp Maron gently counselling *him* to release a little of the resentment & go to the finale.
