holy shit @ "Metallica Moore"

lil urbane (Jordan), Thursday, 25 June 2015 18:23 (eight years ago) link

Keep in mind that's the mother's name.

pplains, Thursday, 25 June 2015 18:34 (eight years ago) link

Hahahahah, she should name the boy Jaymz then.

I think there'll be two post-Justice songs on mine, three if I go with nostalgia rather than reason.

i ended up with more on mine that i expected, for sure.

big surprise from assembling my ballot is that i think justice is my favorite of the classic albums now

It's been hilarious reading old Usenet posts from Metallica newsgroups circa 1996 around the time of Load's release. Loads of snarky posts about how the band have "lost it" and have "sold out" ... the main gist is that the fans felt that Metallica were deliberately trying to fit in with the alternative music scene of the time rather than stay true to themselves. Thing is, I reckon that Metallica were staying true to themselves... I think that Load and Reload were genuinely the albums they wanted to make at that time.

Brad, your Loady playlist is remarkably similar to the Unloaded mix I made for myself ages ago.

Except I loathe "Hero of the Day."

Falconetti Pot (Leee), Thursday, 25 June 2015 20:26 (eight years ago) link

i've mentioned this before, but the first music file i ever downloaded was an mp2 (!!!) of a live performance of "2x4", well before Load came out. it sounded horrible but also kinda awesome & exciting because of how distorted & lo-fi it was.

lil urbane (Jordan), Thursday, 25 June 2015 20:29 (eight years ago) link

Man, I'm listening to the black album and really wishing I could go back and hammer a couple of those songs into my ballot. Do you accept resubmissions, pp?

how's life, Thursday, 25 June 2015 20:38 (eight years ago) link

'Sad But True' has a deeper groove than any of the groove-based tunes on Load/Reload.

lil urbane (Jordan), Thursday, 25 June 2015 20:43 (eight years ago) link

I just randomly Googled "crap drummer", and the first webpage result is about Lars Ulrich. LOL!

what this poll has confirmed is how much i love certain lars phrases, for instance the tom stuff in "and justice for all"

I read an old interview the other day (for Playboy I think) which has Lars and Kirk making fun of Lars' bad drumming skills.

Siegbran, Friday, 26 June 2015 07:54 (eight years ago) link

James & Kirk.

anyway i relistened to st. anger last night bc i was like "certainly i like one of these songs right" and it turns out i might vote for "dirty window"

Anyone looking for a Black Album deep cut to vote for I would ask you to consider The God That Failed.

I'll be submitting my ballot shortly. Turns out just twenty is quite difficult.

for me "of wolf and man" >>>>>>

but "the god that failed" has a great bass line

It's a beautifully crafted tune all round IMO, so many hooks.

God that failed, wolf and man, and through the never are the highlights of that album.

how's life, Friday, 26 June 2015 10:40 (eight years ago) link

Just sent. Ordered fairly arbitrarily, threw up a couple of surprises. Never would've thought I'd put what I did at number three, for example.

Still shifting things up and down, but my ballot will be in by tonight.

YOUR MOM'S OF WOLF AND MAN

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 26 June 2015 12:20 (eight years ago) link

songs on st. anger that succeed despite themselves:

frantic (sorta)
dirty window
the unnamed feeling (until "i rage i glaze i hurt i hate")
purify

ok, when i suggested listening to the later stuff, i thought it was implied that stanger was complete garbage and should never be included in a proclamation like that.

Ha, I don't think I'll be voting for anything from St. Anger somehow.

fine! i'll start my own poll!

god parts of death magnetic are so invigorating and other parts are so boring

There are some really excellent instrumental passages on DM and a couple of great choruses. Only one actually fully rounded great song though, which just missed my ballot.

the thrashy part of "the day that never comes" is so fun, shame about the rest of the song

Every single criticism about the mastering of that album is fucking OTM.

oh yeah it sounds fucking hideous, there are parts of "that was just your life" that are just pure distortion

If pplains felt compelled to mention "Breadfan," then I might as well mention "Free Speech for the Dumb" and "So What?".

I do double-takes each time I see one of those Garage Inc. pix -- Lars does not look like Lars.

it's like they got Peter Gabriel Jr. to pose with them or something.

pplains, Sunday, 28 June 2015 02:23 (eight years ago) link

Can I vote for "Ecstasy of Gold"?

just discovered that they covered it in studio in 2007 so: yes

Just now realized that the title of Garage Inc is a pun on Damage Inc and wow, that's a stinker.

I own the CD, but I don't think I've ever actually listened to it, because I downloaded the Guitar Hero version, which is much cleaner.

oh there are some really sweet jason bass runs in this old live version of "justice" i'm listening to

I must have heard 'Blackened' hundreds upon hundreds of times, and I'm still not bored of it. It's one of those tracks that for some reason has always felt as potent to me as the first time I ever heard it.

i also listened to no life til leather for the first time today and idk how accurate this is bc they were contemporaneous but 1982 hetfield seems to be really going for a king diamond effect

Hey what happened to Pushead?

Until It Sleeps is probably Hetfield's best attempt at singing. mind you, he should never have attempted singing.
