Making A Name For Myself (1979)

here i am in the land of large breakfasts (Doctor Casino), Friday, 19 June 2015 20:43 (eight years ago) link

Wow... that is... I'm speechless... they don't come much better...

I've sort of specialized in abysmal UK nonentities of the 70s on this thread but I think I might have run out of them :( someone prove me wrong please.

The Manner of Crawly (Tom D.), Friday, 19 June 2015 21:06 (eight years ago) link

lol at the making a name for myself cover... dog looks super embarrassed. A+

tylerw, Friday, 19 June 2015 21:16 (eight years ago) link

Oh Tom I thought you'd found an inexhaustible motherlode of abysmal UK nonentities, don't say the supply has ended.

Tim, Friday, 19 June 2015 21:32 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, Making A Name For Myself is so good that it seems anticlimactic to post this one (don't think it's been done yet?)

'Hard Labor' by Three Dog Night

The title and basic concept make it seem like something that should fit here, but it comes out a little too disturbing and ends up looking more like it should Devo album cover or something? apparently this version was quickly pulled in favour of a censored edition with a large sticking plaster over the centre of the image

soref, Friday, 19 June 2015 21:45 (eight years ago) link

not sure if it entirely fits -- the title is just swarbrick 2 -- but I've always found the cover of this one kind of hilarious and halfassed

haha yeah, i love swarbrick

the swarb is awesome, but...

note the miniscule hands attempting to indeed lift the lid

Given Roger Millers sort of goofy sense of humor I suppose he really took to this type of album titling

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 19 June 2015 23:28 (eight years ago) link

Not to pat myself on the back but I kind of want to just retire from the thread after "Making A Name For Myself." I really don't think I can top that one. Nonetheless, a few of today's finds coming up...

That does seem to be the clear winner, way ahead of the back.

This genre just keeps on giving, like film noir or something, pretty much every newly rediscovered example has something to offer.

This is, in fact, a self-titled album - but I would like special dispensation, based on the cover design, to enter it as Valdy and the Hometown Band - Folksinger Deluxe With Side of Fries (1976)

Christopher Milk ‎– Some People Will Drink Anything!

i am hoping against hope that this is not supposed to be a gag about his name being "milk"

ugh

here i am in the land of large breakfasts (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 21 June 2015 03:10 (eight years ago) link

Christopher Milk wasn't a person--it was LA Glam band led by Rock Critic John Mendelsohn (whom you might remember his liner notes to Kinks albums and/or his vicious pans of early Led Zeppelin albums in Rolling Stone), his hyping of which diminished much of his journalistic cred rather quickly.

The Rolling "Top of the Pops" BBC4 Revival thread prompted me to do a wiki on B.A. Robertson, where I found out about his debut album, credited to Brian Alexander Robertson, "Wringing Applause":

https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2701/4123428172_162db0324b.jpg

Bizarrely this was released on Ardent Records, and seems to have been at least partly recorded at Ardent Studios, hence the involvement of Terry Manning... yet it was produced by Georg Kajanus, later frontman of Sailor! I want to hear it now!

Thread has generally been great lately but "Tromboneliness" is one for the ages. I can only imagine it's a whole album of sad-trombone.

was going to mention that the cover of 'Wringing Applause' = the only picture of B.A. Robertson I've ever seen where he looks sort of hot
