The front half of Blackheart is maybe the best music she's ever made on her own.

I know that the main reason I like "Calypso" so much is because of the rampant Twin Peaks sampling but still, I really really REALLY like it.

we're almost halfway in and it's still in my top four albums of the year

it's highly possible that blackheart will end up being my favorite album of the year

Goldenheart is perfect songs throughout, but is mixed and mastered like a Bon Iver record, all space and no pressure. Blackheart is all pressure and bop but has such a weak front-half that I'm amazed that people even compare the two.

None or this is true at all! In what way does Pretty Wicked Things have more space than Swim Free? The main problem with Goldenheart is sequencing, its pace is just wearying.

One of the reasons I dislike Blow is that it feels about a third slower than it should be, it hits that laboured trudging pace that Dawn employs for so much of Goldenheart.

Not that the album form needed saving for me but "Blackheart" is the strongest statement on its behalf I've heard in a few years.

Dance is expected to be the lead single from the artist’s upcoming third solo studio album RedemptionHeart as well as the kick off track from Richard’s proclaimed ‘red era’. RedemptionHeart will be released early next year through her own label, Our Dawn. It will mark the third and final album in a trilogy centered around love, loss and redemption as a progressing narrative. Said trilogy began with the release of 2013’s Goldenheart.
“Dance” will be released on digital retailers and streaming platforms globally on Monday, September 28th. Check out a snippet below.

"hollywould" is really great...love the way, at this stage, she has the confidence to release a straightforward songcraft-focused track like that

also "james dean" and "dance" have been such slow burners - nice, impressive etc on first listen, but only months later you realise how they've sunk themselves into you

she has been very good at avoiding some of the pitfalls that could have loomed post-blackheart

My mixed take from 2015--

I saw Dawn before a smallish 100 or so person crowd at the Howard Theatre. Dawn was full of energy, dancing and projecting her voice and chatting in between songs about Fat Tuesday (she is from New Orleans) her album and how she makes each gig different (NY had dancers). Some younger NY singer Alan Michael was down in DC & jumped onstage to duet with her on "86" and "Physical." One of her 3 keyboardists got jazzy at times, while the drummer was going for a Big eaasyish polyrhythmic funky thing. At times her model poses and tv reality show belting was a tad too much, and some rough sound at the beginning hurt a few cuts. She did most of the new album in her 1 hr & 15 minute set
