Well, did anyone see them on Jools Holland last night?

A very wonky version of AGAP, but still magnificent to see them again. Vocals were VERY dodgy, both Perrett's and Perry and Mair's backing vocals. The performance was pretty energetic though. Great tone from John's magnificently battered olympic white Strat, although he simplified the middle solo a bit (to accomodate for aging fingers?) He's still pretty much my favourite guitarist anyway. Perrett was playing a horrible PRS (ugh!) instead of his Tele and Mair was playing a very unusual Les Paul bass. Mike Kellie looked exactly the same, and as you'd expect, played like a God.

They'll be on Saturday's show doing 2 songs I should expect.

Man, I would love to see that. I guess it'll show up over on the Ovation channel in a few years.

I saw them live last year. Good. Not loud enough though.

Tom D., Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Classic, if only : for Years they would say "he doesn't look forty" in a good way. Now he looks like a biltong.

I suspected as much as on that old VHS video documentary he was interviewed with a backing light...

Kind of annoying that you can't find this thread using the "Thread Search" option.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah but google came up trumps.

Biltong - yes, sadly.

There's supposed to be a new album out later in the year according to Mojo.

He is the portrait of Keith Richards in Keith Richards loft.

OK, I'll stop now.

I listened to the Special View comp recently and still prefer the Peel Sessions by a wide margin.

peel sessions CD is definitely my fave by them.

Dud. Can't stand them, and I don't want to hear 'Another Girl Another Planet' ever a-fucking-gain, tbh.

Was on an TV advert for a while. It's fairly well known, I suppose.

Man, there are lots of covers of "Another Girl, Another Planet" on YouTube. Including one by the Libertines with Peter Perrett himself singing.

I guess a bunch of them probably were inspired by a Blink 182 version.

Reading 'Squeeze: Song by Song' at the moment and discovered that Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze was also in an early incarnation of The Only Ones and even lived with Perrett. Perrett hooked them up with Miles Copeland got them their first deal.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 20 March 2017 09:52 (seven years ago) link

He plays on some songs on "Remains".

Ongar Is An Energy (Tom D.), Monday, 20 March 2017 10:02 (seven years ago) link

Did not know any of that, interesting. Was that early version actually known as Peter and the Pets?

Got Your Money Changes Everything (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 20 March 2017 10:18 (seven years ago) link

I recently acquired a good copy of England's Glory, which is Perret's 1973 album with Harry Kakoulli of Squeeze, including the aforementioned "Peter And The Pets" song. An interesting mix of glam and pre-punk!

Giving an ear to a full advance now -- it's very enjoyable, and pretty much is what to expect sonically. But given how few actual albums he's done, I can't begrudge him.

Friend Andy was at the London show by Perrett the other night and had this to say:

Ferocious, post-VU-sounding band. Set included all of the (incredible) new album; seven or eight as-yet-unrecorded new songs that were just as good—he told us that he wasn’t even going to play his best new ones because he doesn’t want them on YouTube; and half a dozen Only Ones songs. “I’m not a fuckin’ oldies act!” he said, correctly; it was all about the new stuff, and it was great. Buy your tickets for the American tour now.

The only thing I ever had was Special View, which is not a good place to start, I've been told on ilm, but his sheepy whiney voice was what turned me off, don't know how much another producer or better songs could do to fix that (songs might've been ok, but voice v. distracting)
