i get grossed out by the frozen coffee drinks -- like, how's that morning milkshake treating you, fatty?

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Surprised i didn't mention this up thread but the best iced coffee treat is the granita al caffe you get by the parthenon in rome. Little dark crystals of sweetened espresso ice with whipped cream. (Next best iced coffee was one I had in Shimla, the cream was so thick and lumpy)

Ed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

heh, kevin, maybe it's has to do with my maturation as a coffee drinker more than the general availability of the iced stuff

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:45 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, a couple of shots of espresso does make an excellent addition to a milkshake though! also back in coffee shop days i would make my friends come in and drink my liquid ice cream experiments.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:48 (fifteen years ago) link

as far as milkshakes go, where coffee is great, kahluha is greater.

Ed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:49 (fifteen years ago) link

no reason you can't have both.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:51 (fifteen years ago) link

that does sound really tasty, linds. there's a big difference to drinking frozen coffee drinks as if they were milkshakes than drinking them as if they were coffee, tho. it's the people who do the former, who i get enraged at (as proxies of my former fatty self, usually)

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:51 (fifteen years ago) link

er, i mean the latter

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:51 (fifteen years ago) link

now i want coffee ice cream...

Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Dunkin' Donuts French Vanilla iced coffee, with a little bit of sugar and a touch of cream... heaven. DD also has some seriously questionable iced coffee flavors tho... coconut, berry... feh.

miryam, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:54 (fifteen years ago) link

DD's can be very questionable. i feel like their iced coffee can sometimes taste like meat.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Meat? I've never had that experience... I have had really horrible coffee from them in the past though, to the point where I've brought it back into the store.

miryam, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:00 (fifteen years ago) link

LOL meat, ew. i just feel like my experience with their iced coffee has been that it's watered-down, but i've only had it once or twice

Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:01 (fifteen years ago) link

i try not to go to DD anymore as they've changed a lot since they were bought by Baskin Robbins or whatever, they used to have flavored roasts but now they only use flavor shots, have scary microwaved neuvo cuisine, etc

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:07 (fifteen years ago) link

honestly i would not be surprised if there was HFCS in DD straight-up black coffee

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:09 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe it's just me with the meat thing. but for some reason a lot of not-so-fresh iced coffee tastes meat-like to me. i can't explain it.

dean & deluca's is never meaty. so that's my favorite to get on the way to work.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:09 (fifteen years ago) link

I can't remember a time when DD wasn't hella gross, like way too gross to eat or drink anything from.

suzy, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:09 (fifteen years ago) link

i think DD was always kinda gross but they've gotten more gross for sure

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:10 (fifteen years ago) link

i will eat a bunch of munchkins if someone brings them into work, but that's about it.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:12 (fifteen years ago) link

it's a fucking donut store people. they sell fried dough.

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:12 (fifteen years ago) link

hehe

Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:13 (fifteen years ago) link

i love donuts, but i don't pretend they are not gross

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:13 (fifteen years ago) link

freegans dumpster-diving at DD for day-old donuts: it happens

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:14 (fifteen years ago) link

cinammon donut = not gross
cruellers = not gross
chocolate glazed = not gross
the powdered one that is filled with frosting = omg how did i used to eat these?

bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Our HS had a bakery (mom/pop, est. 1935) with the best doughnuts and blueberry muffins in Minneapolis right next door, so DD a real non-starter for me on that level; also I drink tea or cappuccinos but never, ever normal Americano coffee.

Dean and DeLuca used to do hot white chocolate, or white hot chocolate.

I would be super-pleased if they still sold this. The sachets were like $10 a pack in 1990.

suzy, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:15 (fifteen years ago) link

i always loved bostom creme. and chocolate glazed are VERY not gross

Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:16 (fifteen years ago) link

how did i used to eat these??

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:16 (fifteen years ago) link

they're not gross in the sense of "eww, gross caviar," they're gross in the sense that you're eating fried dough and lard, and it's best not to think about that part of the dount experience

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link

donut

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link

totally. anytime someone points out lard as an ingredient in anything i can't eat it for months.

eww caviar

Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I enjoy both lard and caviar.

Ed, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't think there's a better iced coffee in the world than instant bustelo, ice, sugar, and milk shaken to within an inch of its life

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:20 (fifteen years ago) link

lard wishes and caviar dreams

bell_labs, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i've been making cold-brewed iced coffee at home all summer, it is awesome.

Jordan, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I had a DD iced coffee the other day. It tasted like coffee flavored water.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link

It tasted like coffee flavored water.

isn't that what it is?

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean, if it tasted like beef stew i'd be worried.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link

It didn't taste like anything.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link

oh. i thought it tasted like coffee flavored water.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:35 (fifteen years ago) link

it's like water with a liiiittle shot of coffee

Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Not even that much of coffee.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:37 (fifteen years ago) link

what do you expect from a company that shits itself in terror when michelle malkin calls their spokeswoman a jihadist supporter

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I misread that as macully culkin.

jel --, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 16:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I actually like the McDonalds white trash sugar free vanilla ice coffee.

Ed you can get those granita type ice coffees at the place of the Graham L stop.

felicity, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 19:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Not one of the nasty ones out of a can? Would be wise to get a proper one before you write it off entirely?

It was a "proper" one. Of course you have to take into account I'm not a big coffee drinker. :-)
