I loled at this response to Jezebel's call for celebrities being dicks stories:

I critiqued Marc Maron’s interviewing style on a message board I didn’t know he read. This was during the first year or so of WTF and it seemed to me like every time his guest was a woman or some kind of ethnic/sexual minority, he’d focus so squarely on that aspect of them and ignore everything else. He wasn’t being a bigot, per se, but it made me, and seemingly some of his guests, uncomfortable. It felt like he was on a cultural safari of sorts. I pointed this out, perhaps in an aggressively trying-too-hard-to-be-funny manner. And holy shit did he get payback.

Maron puts on his detective hat and doxes me essentially, not replying on the messageboard, but figuring out my real name and harassing me on facebook. We went back and forth for MONTHS. Dozens of long unhinged messages. Then, not being famous for boundaries, he makes me part of his act, mentioning the exchange on multiple podcasts, making his stalking seem quaint and quirky, and recasts me as some stereotypical mean troll-type, which wasn’t true at all, but I guess others disagreed because I started getting hatemail from a bunch of his creepy super-fans. And that’s how I left Facebook.

THEN like three fucking years later the event becomes the basis for the first episode of his dumb tv show. The whole thing turned me off to comedy nerd-dom, cost me some real-life friends, self-esteem, dignity, etc... That said, I learned a lot and the fiasco prompted a lot of self-reflection/growth and a few years later I’m in a much better place. The story already feels very dated: SOOO 2011, amiright?

But yes, don’t piss off Maron, he’s out of his gourd.

Haha! I'm inclined to believe Marc was probably overreacting (especially since he's admitted he made this a personal project for a while), but there's no way this guy is the angel he's pretending to be.

THURSDAY: TERRY GROSS
lol

rip van wanko, Friday, 22 May 2015 17:38 (eight years ago) link

That was better than I expected!

EZ Snappin, Friday, 22 May 2015 17:39 (eight years ago) link

Terry aired an edited version on Fresh Air this Wednesday and then Marc aired the uncut version on WTF yesterday. Good interview imo.

Did he ask Terry how she got so famous despite being an awful interviewer?

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 22 May 2015 18:56 (eight years ago) link

Terry probably asked Marc first

Οὖτις, Friday, 22 May 2015 18:59 (eight years ago) link

yeah
i remember thinking his j mascis interview was a weird vindication of his sorta hard-to-hear slightly vulturic interview style, like the parts where he indelicately pursued stuff actually paid off. & the TG stuff about her first marriage, which totally seemed like it was out of her comfort zone, was so interesting. like it just had the sound of being in a fresh, considerate, honest zone for her.

it was kind of funny to me, since I used to see Terry Gross walking around Philly all the time, that Maron had this exalted ghostly idea of her

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Friday, 22 May 2015 19:17 (eight years ago) link

I don't think it's a stretch to think someone might have a different impression of Terry Gross in person than they would having only listened to Fresh Air for a couple decades.

kevin corrigan ep had some good scorsese stories before descending precipitously into six-and-a-half years of middle-aged guys talking about rockin'

this was kinda infuriating to me; kevin corrigan's so great, his scorsese stories were so beautiful, & he's so engaged in the kind of anecdotable spread of his field, but maron's just so lazy & ill-informed that he left everything unexplored. even glimpsing at his filmography could have meant hours of cool seymour cassel or ben gazzara stories & instead it was just mid-life crisis vinylmania. really bad. super frustrating.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 June 2015 16:06 (eight years ago) link

Maron should just start a second podcast called "Talkin' Rockin' with the Boys" where all the guests have to bring ten records over to the garage

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 1 June 2015 16:07 (eight years ago) link

Pitch that to him on twitter.

Maron doesn't do so well with character actors with large bodies of work. His angle is usually "You probably wish you were a big star."

i hear you - like there was the claire danes interview where he kinda swum around looking for some sorta comfort-zone discomfort-zone they could chew on - but i do think the music thing is its own dull, pathological spin off, just a rogue neuron pathway in his brain that spills oil over everything, shuts down his hearing to accommodate a guy-working-his-self-aggrandising-self-deprecating-#vinyl-routine in a loud voice thing.

Finally got to see his standup for the first time this weekend (filmed for an upcoming special) and he was phenomenal. Totally in his element even at his most uncomfortable. Goldthwait was directing, was bummed that I couldn't figure out where the eff he was in the theater.

Tarkus Aurelius (Old Lunch), Monday, 8 June 2015 16:14 (eight years ago) link

I was at the show too (the 10 p.m. taping)) and thought the same. Really comfortable and in control of what he's doing, even when he lost the thread of where he was going. When Bobcat made a voice-over staging comment ("move the mic stand back to that spot" or something), Maron got him to say something in the old Bobcat voice. Interesting to see Maron in public in front of hundreds, versus having public conversations in private rooms.

... (Eazy), Monday, 8 June 2015 16:18 (eight years ago) link

We were at the same show! Maron said at one point they'd probably use the earlier show for the special and that he'd just let the show we were at be the weird one. And he made some comment later about how something didn't matter because they'd probably scrap the taping and Bobcat came on-mic and told him that that was his self-loathing talking because ours was the better show. I kinda hope they release it as-is, broken glasses and all.

Haha, disclaimer for gross out stuff? Sounds like a Watt interview alright.

circa1916, Thursday, 11 June 2015 15:52 (eight years ago) link

and I just love that Watt is this incredible freight-train storyteller, to the point where Maron basically just hitches himself to the back as it's going by

the different dynamic makes it p enjoyable

wow, the grossout warning was not overstated

vg otm - amazing and endearing how much energy and enthusiasm watt has, even when discussing his septic taint. was it just me or did he seem to get briefly choked up when talking about d. boon and the crash?
