house of lannister def teetering at the brink

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 16:21 (nine years ago) link

My wife was saying Stannis' character was more than just a buzzkill stoic in the books than he's been presented thus far and this season is trying to change that perception a bit.

house of lannister def teetering at the brink

In terms of the game of thrones, yes. In terms of the larger story, I doubt it. Cersei, Jaime, and the Imp aren't done anytime soon, I'd reckon. Cersei's Frankenmountain isn't even running yet.

nah i hope that roose & ramsay get creamed

They will. They're regional meanies at best and they will suffer and it will be enjoyable, but their suffering will come at some horrifying monkey's paw-like cost a la Joffrey imo

polyphonic, Monday, 11 May 2015 19:22 (nine years ago) link

feel like cersei is way over playing her hand, alienating potential allies, setting herself up for a fall, if she and her son-king go down its over for the house they have no money, jamie and tyrion are out in the wilderness

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 19:32 (nine years ago) link

comes back to how tywin was saying shes not as smart as she thinks and is too impulsive

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 19:32 (nine years ago) link

stannis seems like a good guy who's been hardened by rough shit, hence the odd relation to jon snow where he seems to respect and admire him for the same qualities that he thinks make him a foolhardy chump.

ramsay is the worst, i don't think i'll be able to see that actor in anything else without immediately thinking of him as an utter douchebag.

how about as an indie folksinger (which he is)

slothroprhymes, Monday, 11 May 2015 19:38 (nine years ago) link

I thought this was going to be a real cost-cutting episode - apart from one brief bit of cg dragon, it was just lots of gloomy interiors. Then came the scene on the boat.

"Long sullen silences and the occasional punch in the face."

I think she's playing her (currently poor) hand very well. She's allied herself with the a malevolent religious army, will eventually be protected by a great warrior monster, and has a bitchin castle built on top of a gold mine.

polyphonic, Monday, 11 May 2015 19:58 (nine years ago) link

if her castle is on top of a gold mine, why are they borrowing so much money from their allies and Braavos?

DJP, Monday, 11 May 2015 20:01 (nine years ago) link

the gold mine is empty yo! and shes got on her side is some unstable otherwise powerless religious extremists, those scheming ass tyrells gonna eat her for lunch

DJP, Monday, 11 May 2015 20:03 (nine years ago) link

thrones arguing better than most currently prominent fictional works why aligning yourself closely with any religion generally leads to things not being a good time

slothroprhymes, Monday, 11 May 2015 20:05 (nine years ago) link

like instead of building alliances amongst the small council she just sent them all away, shes hella arrogant, noones gonna stand with her

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 20:05 (nine years ago) link

Is the gold mine really empty? I thought it was just almost empty.

polyphonic, Monday, 11 May 2015 20:07 (nine years ago) link

The crown's debt is the Tyrells' problem now imo.

polyphonic, Monday, 11 May 2015 20:08 (nine years ago) link

iirc its empty tywin told cersei last season

lag∞n, Monday, 11 May 2015 20:10 (nine years ago) link

it's empty and has been for some time, which may have been tywin's only weakness (aside from not understanding that his dwarf son was his only decent thing) - he was always scrambling to make alliances and keep the lannister financial instability hidden

slothroprhymes, Monday, 11 May 2015 20:10 (nine years ago) link

I guess my point is that when winter comes having a bunch of cash won't matter that much.

polyphonic, Monday, 11 May 2015 20:13 (nine years ago) link

yup youd rather have food like the tyrells

secretly hoping that cersei ends up getting hers stark style, i.e. immediately after watching what she assumes is her last living child get murdered by somebody insignificant like frey

that would be p sweet

really enjoyed this ep - agree with everyone saying stannis is a lot more likeable this year.

btw is jorah's arm the same condition that stannis's daughter has?

cis-het shitlord (Merdeyeux), Monday, 11 May 2015 22:54 (nine years ago) link

feel like they haven't talked much about this, though iirc gilly said something about her sisters having it?

stannis's grammar frustration was a great moment - they are definitely pushing quite hard to make him more charismatic this season.

xpost jorah prob thinking: "what if she likes stone men? she doesn't, that's ridiculous. but what if she does?"

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 12 May 2015 01:21 (nine years ago) link

Interesting to see that Roose is a fucking psycho. He always seemed more dispassionate than sick.

Ramsay is such a great looking guy.

Jon Snow itching to tell that boy that he killed his girlfriend Ygritte?

I presume being touched by stone men on your clothes is okay. From the debate I've seen, apparently Jorah is already able to infect other people. Hope they were wrong. Even in a cruel fantasy world I like some little bit of fairness and fighting chances.

I do prefer it when you get episodes focusing more time on less characters.

it, how you say, draws the eye

I have to figure the only reason Jorah isn't chopping off his own arm is that he needs it for the trip ahead

I'm not sure why Stannis did nothing while Jon decided to let the wildlings loose -- didn't he just kill their leader for wanting to do that? Won't they want his head?

good episode btw
