May this thread never die. Best thing ILX ever came up with, I think.

It's true - where else can you find interesting discussion about DBG? Nowhere.

Hahahha we are the only one who owned the records, us! Oh my god we so exclusive & obscure.

We threw parties with a DJ downstairs, you know, in the basement. This dude played Dreamboat Gorilla all night long. And he was their manager, see, so sometimes the band would come in and play, and they'd have their tour rider as 275 bananas.

You know, in a way, "Monkey Pod (Able)" kinda makes Long Way To The Top, even though it's so unpolished compared to the rest of the stuff on side B.

If Your Face or Mine? doesn't walk this I will lose all respect for ILM.

I'm afraid lurkers are going to push the Best of over the top. Back in the day, I got pretty sick of seeing college dorm rooms festooned with that rainbow-colored Tower of Pisa poster insert that Milton Glaser did for the Best of. These guys were an album band if there ever was an album band. Putting the delicate "Honey Eyes" next to a monster like "Kong Schlong Phooey" is wrong wrong wrongy.

I will bring your attention back to Mr. Crutis' post:

That's a motherfucking upset!

Okay, yeah, the keyboard sound on No Direction Home was like Sub-Journey at times, but how can you fuck with a run like the one from "Sheltered" to "New Wave Tango". I don't think we'd have half of the Stereolab sound without it. I don't think it should have won, but deserved more than 1 vote imho.

How the fuck can a live album where Howie Bozack doesn't even play on it be voted the best DG album? I call bullshit.

Death to False Meta (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 00:42 (3 years ago) Permalink

How? The song selection. It essentially functions as The Best of Dreamboat Gorilla with a bit more energy to offset the crowd noise. The version of "Lowland Girl" destroys the original 7", to use just one example.

Mark, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:28 (3 years ago) Permalink

RONG

The 7" "Lowland Girl" slays pretty much anything else. Of course I may be biased because the B-side is still one of the most glorious 5 minutes of recorded music ever. I'm still convinced the engineer snuck Fripp in late one night to overdub the solo.

I choose to view this thread as about an entirely invented band. The comments are funnier that way.

guess what

jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 11:56 (3 years ago) Permalink

Please tell me that you people who voted for Lw/oB know that it's mostly scratch takes from the studio with crowd noise mixed in. That's why it leaves off some of the more obvious road songs from the early records- "Hard Highway Joker" and "We're Lost (Kathy)". Granted, Boatgorilla's overdubs are the last thing he did in a DBG context, and his anger comes out in those solos for sure.

LOL I had no idea this had become such a meme, ILX text search provides much amusement!

Heh. Gawd, I even commented in that thread. A YEAR IS TOO LONG.

Loved their split with the Latents.

holy shit, did anyone else hear the rumor that Doug Boatgorilla died this week?

Dan Crust (frontman of Krusteez, who toured with DG for a few years) is tweeting about it like crazy right now. even he doesn't know if it's true or not. Dan is a notorious prankster (few people realize that he was the one behind the lobster boat incident) but other people close to Doug are wondering about his whereabouts, so this could be serious...

Man, I got Coachella tickets because of a surprise reunion rumor.

bendy, Friday, 1 April 2011 19:16 (2 years ago) Permalink

Wow. I hope that's just a rumor. : ( My cousin saw him play a private houseboat show on Lake Shasta just last month.

kkvgz, Friday, 1 April 2011 19:26 (2 years ago) Permalink

well shit, Dan Crust and others have confirmed that Doug and his brother Rubius had been in the Yukon together (!). this past Monday, Rubius got homesick and headed back to the States in a tiny prop plane, but it crashed and killed everyone aboard. word got out that Doug was also a passenger, but he was actually safe and sound in the Yukon, and he hadn't even heard about the crash until Dan managed to contact him this morning.

I honestly thought Doug and Rubius were estranged, but I guess not. Rubius was the one who sold out stadiums in the late '90s with his unauthorized tribute band Dream Goat Barilla. and a few years ago he sold thousands of bootleg editions of the DC Tapes just months before they were due for an official release. good fucking riddance.

the only bad thing about this is that the Coachella thing will probably never happen :(

Comment spammers are ruthlessly capitalizing on the news about Doug Boatgorilla's adderall addiction, which is why it's been years since his last record. Hopefully he makes it through this rough patch. Kids, Doug is great musician, but just because you love his music doesn't mean you should follow his example.

^ just pre-ordered the double vinyl. Tho' I think they'd have to mess up the running order to split it across four sides.

bendy, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 17:09 (1 year ago) Permalink

Funny how "Renegade" is the shortest track on here. I have three different DougBG bootlegs (all from '02-'03) that end with a track called "Renegade." They're all about 40 minutes long and they're all chilled-out neo-hippie jams (Doug sarcastically introduces one version with, "This is our tribute to Phish"). Other than that, they may as well be three completely different songs, and I thought "Renegade" was just a made-up fan title. Maybe this 5-minute "Renegade" has nothing to do with what's on the boots.

Re: the double vinyl — apparently the first LP includes all 5 of these tracks. The second LP is a bonus disc of "sketches, interviews, dreamscapes, and field hollers". I wonder what that's about.
