Bit nervous to know which version is going to make the album. The version without Wale is just about perfect.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 3 May 2015 21:17 (eight years ago) link

Maybe he'll do with-AND-without Wale versions on the album like "How Many Drinks."

I've been holding off buying the frigging GIRLS Season 2 soundtrack because I want Simple Things so much but I'm not sure if it will be on the next album.

Idk it's good but I'm not in love with it. (The cover, otoh)

The Reverend, Monday, 4 May 2015 18:38 (eight years ago) link

yeah i feel the same way. there's a certain effervescence that is missing i think. i like it less than "the thrill"

J0rdan S., Monday, 4 May 2015 18:46 (eight years ago) link

yeah it's not the very top shelf but i want to hear how it sounds on the radio. especially because the "coffee in the morning" version >>>>> the "fucking in the morning" one.

some dude, Monday, 4 May 2015 18:52 (eight years ago) link

I thought "Adorn" was just OK when it appeared on the EP, so I'll wait for (and if) radio lifts this.

It's the #Beautiful I thought people were falling in love with

, Monday, 4 May 2015 18:56 (eight years ago) link

Love this guy, but everything he's done post-Kaleidoscope feels very one note to me

Evan R, Monday, 4 May 2015 19:02 (eight years ago) link

'the thrill' seems a comparison designed to arbitrarily cardinalize that song's qualities, i reject it

'use me' x 'arch & point', if anything, otoh

r|t|c, Monday, 4 May 2015 19:14 (eight years ago) link

if i was gonna make a favorable comparison, i would say that the layering of vocals on "coffee" reminds me of the sort of static dreaminess of "kaleidoscope dream," a song that seems slight at first but really reveals itself over time

J0rdan S., Monday, 4 May 2015 20:10 (eight years ago) link

i.e. an album track?

praise going up to miguel for making the solo version free - even aside from wale the clean version is a lot better

i meant official not free

solo version is spectacular, "fucking" is terrible

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 5 May 2015 17:33 (eight years ago) link

having a prominent curse word to conspicuously edit seems like something radio actively gravitates to these days, would be terrible if not surprising if stations opt to play "f___in' in the morning" over "coffee in the morning."

some dude, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 18:02 (eight years ago) link

Adding 'fucking' + putting Wale on both seem like total studio moves to me, the original was just called 'Coffee' after all

, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 18:43 (eight years ago) link

The motorik slowburn of the arrangement (which carries over to miguel's performance) is so captivating, I think this works better for not going for the pop jugular, it just hangs there suspended and teasing.

Tim F, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 18:59 (eight years ago) link

I might actually prefer the youtube rip to the iTunes store version, there's something Wall-of-Soundish about the final two minutes that benefits from a mussing of the edges

miguel is kind of like a cartoon version of a sexy dude while also being a really sexy dude

cis-het shitlord (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 5 May 2015 22:04 (eight years ago) link

that's why "Coffee" works -- the "turns into" verse mirrors what happens when after a few drinks the guy become steadily sexier (he could have also titled it "How Many Drinks").

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 May 2015 22:14 (eight years ago) link

I have only listened to the Pure Miguel version of this and I'm kind of scared of the other version TBH, but wow, I didn't realise how much I needed this until it was here.

miguel is kind of like a cartoon version of a sexy dude while also being a really sexy dude

This is exactly why it works? The level of metatextuality and knowingness to his performance of ~Male Sexuality~ which only serves to heighten his actual sexiness.

f.u. I called "Adorn" right away

The Reverend, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 07:08 (eight years ago) link

You know it was a Certain ILX0r on social media getting all annoyed about the promo image and the hole in Miguel's jeans that even alerted me to the fact of this single's existence. (Which is really annoying because hot damn, that is Spotify Hipster Boyfriend's job to alert me to this kind of thing, but I think he's jealous because he thinks I fancy Miguel.) The kind of frothing "for gods sake, lad, put some pants on" reaction just made me realise that he knows exactly who his target market is, and how to hit us.

Sigh.

Salacious, salty and sweet.

The Hauntology of Celebrity (Branwell with an N), Wednesday, 6 May 2015 07:25 (eight years ago) link

how the hell could anyone get annoyed at the promo image

lex pretend, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 07:39 (eight years ago) link

miguel's performance of male sexuality really magnifies how rare it is in current pop; even the boy band types don't do it like this

lex pretend, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 07:40 (eight years ago) link

To be fair, I don't think he was entirely serious!

The Hauntology of Celebrity (Branwell with an N), Wednesday, 6 May 2015 07:58 (eight years ago) link

ha i have no idea who it was, i was off twitter

lex pretend, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 08:27 (eight years ago) link

I posted it on social media. I wasn't annoyed. I thought it was funny.

Unsettled defender (ithappens), Wednesday, 6 May 2015 09:00 (eight years ago) link

It would be nice to know when the album is actually coming out. I can't wait much longer.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 13:45 (eight years ago) link

this song reminds me of that 1975 album

tpp, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 17:11 (eight years ago) link

"miguel is kind of like a cartoon version of a sexy dude while also being a really sexy dude" Ha ha. Yes.

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 6 May 2015 17:50 (eight years ago) link

Oh no, looking like Lenny Kravitz. What a terrible thing.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 18:20 (eight years ago) link

oh come on lex: dude is a model. it ain't super compelling for me.

I'm not lex and also I personally feel very ummm.... "compelled" when I look at Lenny Kravitz.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 18:42 (eight years ago) link

It's increasingly rare to have a pop star who can actually pull it off without coming across as sleazy, creepy or just trying way too hard, you need a certain twinkle in your eye, one that comes across on record as well. Miguel definitely has it.
