xp ive never been clear if the anecdote refers to that scene (in s2, during the riot in king's landing) or this upcoming new scene but i'm guessing the latter

slothroprhymes, Monday, 27 April 2015 19:55 (eight years ago) link

either the people coming to the house in order to die are willing to go through a lot of hassle in order to die quickly and peacefully, or arya was using the wrong door or something

You don't understand this process at all. Those people enter through "shipping and receiving" side door.

Evan, Monday, 27 April 2015 19:56 (eight years ago) link

oooooh, and Arya had to use the "emerging acolytes" door

Right, just look like you want to die and mosey through the open loading bay and nobody will bother you.

im finding it interesting that the other fantasy show that's on rn, outlander, appears to be showing similarly disturbing content of that specific nature and not attracting as much attention

Evan, Monday, 27 April 2015 21:10 (eight years ago) link

negative attention, that is. as yet. then again perhaps the director of an episode of that show did not do something as stupid as say to a critic that the obvious and highly disturbing rape depicted on his show was not a rape, leading to his not being a director on the show anymore

Outlander is more soft-core porn-y than OTT violent...

All the promo shots for Outlander make it look like The Notebook or something, is there more to it than that?

yes, but i had a hard time getting into it past the first ep

Rila Fukushima will be a proper character?

Tyrion was really dumb boasting out loud like that. I assumed Jorah was taking was taking him to Cersei but others are saying Danaerys.

I had to be reminded that Janos betrayed the Starks but I thought Jon beheaded him because he'd be either useless or a traitor.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 00:43 (eight years ago) link

After hearing Neil Marshall speak of the HBO pervert audience representative, I've been amused by the idea of this one guy creeping around the sets of many of the HBO shows, with cast and crew trying to get rid of him like Mario trying to get rid of Lakitu the cloud driving annoyance.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 00:51 (eight years ago) link

Some people do seem to get impatient when there aren't Big Shocking Events happening. I mean, this episode had a wedding and no-one even got murdered during it. But I enjoyed this ep quite a bit, actually.

Yeah, Tryion was getting a little loose-tongued (who was that woman who spotted him?), and I also think Jorah is whisking him off to Daenerys - he's obviously still got her on his mind, what with drinking away his sorrows in close proximity to Dany cosplay prostitutes. Whether or not she's becoming less popular as a ruler; they clearly still think she's hott.
Margaery is also starting to be less careful about what she says in front of Cersei when she's with her giggling handmaidens. I did like "we'll get some wine for you - it's a little early for us".

Arya in a dress. I liked the girl assisting her, in the House of Black & White; hope she becomes a recurring character.

Well, Rila Fukushima (famous fashion model turned actress, I know her best from second Wolverine film but she's been in other tv shows too) is obviously a red priestess but I don't know if there's enough to suggest she'll be in it much as anything other than a sign of the spreading of that religion.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 13:40 (eight years ago) link

i don't think GoT takes a well known face and gives it a speech and a closeup and a meaningful exchange of looks with a lead character without having the payoff of more of the same, especially when it's a young beautiful woman

apparently an alfie allen interview has confirmed that the ramsay scene i am most terrified of in the books is indeed going to be in the show

oh sweet christ...

if sansa is filling the role of a character from the books who marries ramsay snow, it will be very unpleasant indeed

haha distant screams of humans falling miles to their death or a nearby cat's meow? I guess that's pretty accurate.

Evan, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 03:33 (eight years ago) link

right okay, i've seen the third episode now and things are slowly starting to move forward BUT -- I'm still a bit confused as to what a lot of the characters are up to. It's probably because the last season feels like so long ago and I've forgotten a few details but what exactly is Arya up to? Why did she go all the way to the house of black and white just to hang out and do nothing? What was that token she threw in the river? I don't remember how she got it. Why does she want to become 'no one'? Who are all the people there? Am I right in thinking the guy in the cloak is the same assassin who granted her three kills in previous series, or is he someone else? Is Arya merely interested in revenge at this stage or something bigger? What's all the mumbo jumbo about the 7 gods or archetypes or something, and when did she learn all this?

but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 April 2015 08:39 (eight years ago) link

she has nowhere else to go and is sick of not having control of her own destiny; a coin given to her by jaqen h'ghar signifying that she is a friend of the faceless men; she got it from jaqen h'ghar in season 2; yes, that is jaqen h'ghar; arya is interested in revenge, yes sure, but also in having agency of some kind; she learned exactly as you did, the idea is that single throughline through all the religions in the world of GoT (or here on Earth) is that the one god worshiped by all people is the god of death, and that is who we ultimately serve. that's the faith of the faceless men, with whom arya is currently chilling.

Clay, Wednesday, 29 April 2015 09:20 (eight years ago) link

cheers!

but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 April 2015 09:43 (eight years ago) link

i must say, a lot of that doesn't feel very explicit in this season. despite the much-heralded divergences from the books, this season feels increasingly like an adaptation where certain plot-points are breezed over and character arcs don't feel particularly clear. I'm sure it's clearer in the bookes, but for those just watching as a series, it's testament to this season's rocky start that Arya would travel to a house in the middle of nowhere because she doesn't appear to have anything better to do. And as mentioned upthread, being refused access and then being granted it for no apparent reason a day or two later seems like a willfully gnomic move.

but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 April 2015 09:58 (eight years ago) link

I'm not getting any of this confusion, tbh. I mean, for Arya's reasons for going, at least. Now we are experiencing things through her eyes, as a stranger in a strange land, and the mystery is deliberate. And that's fine.

painfully alive in a drugged and dying culture (DavidM), Wednesday, 29 April 2015 10:16 (eight years ago) link

But if Arya's hell-bent on avenging her relatives, why has she set sail to Braavos so she can hang around a dank labyrinth trying to forget who she is?

but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 April 2015 11:44 (eight years ago) link

She knows she needs the skills first. She's pretty patient is Arya.

she has wanted to be a killer since p much the start, and they did spend several episodes showing how shit hot at killing people that jaqen guy was.

I was wondering whether deciding not to throw Needle away was due to sentimentalism, or just that she was thinking, 'this Faceless Men thing may turn out to be bs, I need a back-up plan'. Or a bit of both.

painfully alive in a drugged and dying culture (DavidM), Wednesday, 29 April 2015 12:04 (eight years ago) link

I thought Ned gave it to her - didn't he find she was trying to learn to fight, get annoyed, then change heart and give her the sword?
