"I'll Remember" >>>>> anything on Ray of Light

Eric H., Tuesday, 21 April 2015 13:05 (nine years ago) link

It's as good a song as any of its Patrick Leonard co-compositions but w/out his gewgaws.

his = William Orbit's

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 13:21 (nine years ago) link

Is there a Spotify playlist for this?

Evan R, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 14:58 (nine years ago) link

I didn't have time to make one yesterday, but anyone who wants to attempt it can do.

Small Town Pizza Lawyer (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 15:10 (nine years ago) link

Random thoughts...Lol someone had a top 40 hit with a reggae cover of Peter Frampton...wait it gets worse, that General Public song is reggae-fied cover of the Staple Singers song...you know your Top 40 years is in trouble when Michael Bolton isn't even the worst song that year...the white guy in the All-4-One video looks like Edward Snowden...Gin And Juice is going to win this, but 2nd best hip-hop has some real contenders with Ice Cube, Outkast, and Masta Ace.

Loser/Gin And Juice should dominate this, so throwing my vote away on Stan Lynch's last top 40 appearance.

it would be fun to do these for bottom 40 lists too

I wish I had access to those. I've been using this site.

Small Town Pizza Lawyer (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 15:48 (nine years ago) link

I found a treasure trove of weekly top 100 .txt files a while back but only up through the mid-'90s or so, IIRC.

I feel like the people discounting the "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" should hear the vastly superior album version

It's much, much better than everything on Diamonds and Pearls which I pretty much hate aside from "Gett Off"

DJP, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 16:12 (nine years ago) link

it would be fun to do these for bottom 40 lists too

"Money Don't Matter 2 Night" is much better MOR Prince than "TMBGITW," but I actually kinda like both of them.

Au Jus On My Dungarees (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 16:59 (nine years ago) link

i remember these polls that matos used to do: Billboard Hot 100 New Entries, December 2003

he polled new hot 100 entries for every month from jan 2000 to dec 2003, it was p fun

dyl, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 17:04 (nine years ago) link

Wow, I totally missed all that.

Small Town Pizza Lawyer (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 17:13 (nine years ago) link

Voted "Whatta Man," but big love to "I'll Remember" and "Gin & Juice." Of the many terrible covers, I'll take the 10,000 Maniacs one, even though Natalie Merchant could drain the sexiness out of a sex swamp. I had happily forgotten that Richard Marx and Michael Bolton were still charting into the mid-'90s. I respect the Bruce song more than I love it, "Bump n Grind" suffers from knowing too much about R. Kelly.

I think in my mind I had fused the Big Mountain version of "Baby I Love Your Way" with the Will to Power version, to the extent that I remembered them as the same song.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 18:35 (nine years ago) link

lol I didn't even notice it was the Big Mountain version. I just glanced and thought it was Will to Power and briefly thought "wasn't that from earlier than 1994?"

Small Town Pizza Lawyer (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 18:38 (nine years ago) link

Hint: Will To Power is way, way better.

I'm surprised by all of the positive mentions of "I'll Remember" because, personally, I'll remember "I'll Remember" as the second blandest hit Madonna had had at that point (after the drippy "This Used To Be My Playground").

Honey Mustard On My Tunic (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 18:43 (nine years ago) link

lol 1994...I'll Remember is on a soundtrack with Mudhoney's Run Shithead Run.

Small Town Pizza Lawyer (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 18:45 (nine years ago) link

"Playground" does nothing for me, but I love the melodic turns in "I'll Remember" (basically, I love most Patrick Leonard-Madonna compositions).

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 18:46 (nine years ago) link

that'll be the With Honors soundtrack, also home to Kristen Hersh's "Your Ghost"

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 18:46 (nine years ago) link

The keyboard bedrock of I'll Remember is absolutely lovely.

Small Town Pizza Lawyer (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 18:47 (nine years ago) link

I saw With Honors at least a couple times, but never really looked at the soundtrack. It's absurd and great at the same time.

Small Town Pizza Lawyer (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 21 April 2015 18:48 (nine years ago) link

I love that the bassline starts below the root on each repetition. I love those backwards strings in the bridge. I love the patient undulations of the synths. It's perfect balladry.

Eric H., Tuesday, 21 April 2015 19:02 (nine years ago) link

How many fucking versions of Baby I Love Your Way can there be?

pplains, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 20:13 (nine years ago) link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby,_I_Love_Your_Way

3, apparently?

DJP, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 20:15 (nine years ago) link

Had to have been a UB40 version in there somewhere. Had to have been.

pplains, Tuesday, 21 April 2015 20:33 (nine years ago) link

Lol Alfred I was talking about the song, my bad

Really stoked about the love for I'll Remember after its somewhat lackluster performance on the Madonna poll; it was def top 5 on my ballot though. Def in the running for me, tho Snoop Dogg, Crash Test Dummies, "Dunkie Butt" and "All that She Wants" are also huge for me. And I dont remember Player's Ball making top 40
