I have dropped my current 3GS on more rocks than I can count. It refuses to die.

it felt a little scary but i was proud of myself after, im not like super mr fixit or anything fwiw

lag∞n, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 15:36 (nine years ago) link

just take a systematic approach go slow and u shd be fine, make sure you have a good container to hold the screws etc, theres prob like a 5% chance u will break ur phone

lag∞n, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 15:37 (nine years ago) link

I took the case off of my 6 yesterday for the first time in a year and remembered why I use one - no grip on all those smooth, rounded edges. It felt like it was trying to get free of my hands. And the case I use has a soft inside w/ a hard shell, so it absorbs shock when I manage to drop the phone anyway.

I think it's prob in this thread or the other one, but I dropped my 6 face down on a rock, took it to an Apple store, and they had the whole thing replaced and ready in 45 minutes.

I had applecare and had to pay the accidental damage deductible, but I think w/o that it was like $100

The apple care deductible for replacing my cracked screen was $80. Still pretty expensive, IMO.

Je55e, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 15:38 (nine years ago) link

NEW iPhone 6 Screen Replacement done in 5 minutes is a really misleading title!

Je55e, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 15:43 (nine years ago) link

my 6 case has almost nothin to do with pro (i've trained myself to assume if i drop it, even in the case, it's breaking- to lessen future psychological agony when i drop it and it breaks), it's all about grip. i fumbled the naked 6 like 3 times, and always managed to save it. i really like the feel of the super sleek rubber apple cases, but they are almost too sticky in some pockets.

men without hat tips (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 15:44 (nine years ago) link

$80 is indeed expensive but I am willing to believe Je55e and I are particularly skilled at breaking things

mh, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 16:44 (nine years ago) link

I never broke a phone until the 5. I've broken both the 5 and the 6. I drop my phone at the same rate that I always have.

DJP, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 17:54 (nine years ago) link

I have never broken a phone.

Jeff, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 18:42 (nine years ago) link

I've ruined a number of phones with water but never broke one until the screen on my iPhone 6 broke. And that wasn't from dropping but (I'm pretty sure) from squeezing myself around a badly parked car with the phone in my pocket.

If you care about Apple’s media players, 8.4’s promising. Music.app was re-written. A few photos:

http://9to5mac.com/2015/04/13/hands-on-ios-music-app

Maybe an OS X version will appear and they deprecate iTunes?

Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:28 (nine years ago) link

I am scared to click on that in case you are trolling me and they didn't really touch the Music app

mh, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:28 (nine years ago) link

One of my favorite features in the iOS 8.4 Music app is the ability to manage your queue of songs. Apple has offered this in iTunes on the Mac for a while now, but never on iOS. With iOS 8.4, however, you can now choose to play a song next, or add it to your full queue.
sigh pathetic

Nhex, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:48 (nine years ago) link

Wow.

schwantz, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:58 (nine years ago) link

"Hey, Jim?"
"Yeah, LIsa?"
"Do, uh, well, have we talked about maybe adding a queue to the music player on iPhone?"
"I beg your pardon?"
"Well, y'know, like a list of songs that you want to play next."
"You mean like shuffle?"
"No, more like a, well, like you tap on a song, but instead of playing it, you put it on the end of a list."
"Like a playlist?"
"Sort of, except you aren't saving it for later, just playing it later."
"Later like when?"
"Like after the other songs in the queue."
"Which other songs?"
"The ones you add to the queue."
"Oh, well, um, that sounds complex. I think that functionality would confuse our users."

you used to be able to modify an "on the fly" playlist way more easily and then they somehow got rid of that accidentally in one of their redesigns.

Took off my case to clean out the sand. Walked to the convenience store minutes later and it slipped out of my hand like a fish, sending the fucker spectacularly - sending it flying all the way across an intersection of cobble stones. Screen shattered. Brhrjdjdjdksjdkss

My favorite unknown feature was the Apple Activity app informing me halfway into a movie with a forceful haptic jolt and message demanding I needed to stand for one minute out of every hour to remain healthy and I should do so right now because I hadn’t stopped sitting since the movie began.

You must understand, I love my brother, he was ok growing up with, though he was an older hit-you-on-the-arm-for-flinching kind of brother, and I mostly filter all family stuff through him since I’m estranged from my disabled father that he lives near and gives me updates on. My father is estranged because he orchestrated a secret wedding between him and his nurse in the weeks after my mom died and this is now three years later and I’ve never met her and I don’t really intend to and last week my dad referred to her as “your stepmother” in an email to me even though she’s closer to my age than his. Why does every new piece of software and hardware remind me that my mom passed away quickly and unexpectedly a few years ago, leaving everything in her wake in chaos? Developers: please stop doing that. I have already had to remind Facebook about it and it’s starting to get tedious.

Think that paragraph was written with humor... Much like he wasn't listing all the prices of his workout equipment to be all Patrick Bateman, but to describe the lunacy it is of jogging with $1000 worth of metal strapped to one's body.

got a new 6 phone yesterday - off button on my 5 went kaput

i dont mind the larger size but it is weird to hold in yr hand somehow. a bit too slim and lightweight and weirdly rounded, feels too slippery idk

3 was def best handshape, but i quite liked the 5 after i got used to it
