Yeah where's the discussion.

Does this show have a bigger budget now or was it all wasted on the dragon scene and the statue sliding down the pyramid scene?

Evan, Monday, 13 April 2015 15:20 (nine years ago) link

the budget afaik has increased steadily every year. in the seasons where theyve had big battles or other major sequences (blackwater, red wedding, purple wedding, wildling battle), theyve also shorted other episode budgets - mostly by engineering said episodes to not need as many effects/locations/etc. - to pour extra into battle episodes.

slothroprhymes, Monday, 13 April 2015 15:31 (nine years ago) link

like the wildling battle episode cost like 12 million on its own according to the director neil marshall in an interview, iirc

slothroprhymes, Monday, 13 April 2015 15:32 (nine years ago) link

That still sounds fairly cheap actually, a movie looking as good as that episode would only be twice as long, and cost maybe ten times as much.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Monday, 13 April 2015 15:37 (nine years ago) link

the little girl playing young cersei did a great job - you could clock who she was supposed to be almost immediately from the tone in her voice

Felt pretty bummed about losing Ciaran Hinds tbh.

stannis is such a cunt, i'd burn before kneeling to that prannet too

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 13 April 2015 16:01 (nine years ago) link

One of the most concise ways I've ever seen of character establishment was that comment, "we all know what Stannis is." from the first season, before we had ever seen him or really know anything about him.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Monday, 13 April 2015 16:12 (nine years ago) link

i kind of dig stannis and his moral absolutism less psyched abt his crazy religious fanaticism tho it is understandable in the context. was hoping for some assassin school arya (assuming that's where she's headed at least) but perhaps in subsequent eps.

also totally unsure where the plot is headed right now, feels like this season could go in any direction and im not sure if that's a good thing yet

Interesting how they've made Sansa look more like her mother (or Littlefinger has).

Is this the first time they've ever used flashbacks? I didn't think they'd ever do that because there's been so much talk of past events that other makers would have used flashbacks for.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 00:58 (nine years ago) link

Yes, Ciaran Hinds was good in the episode.

Really puzzled as to how exactly anyone could control dragons like that unless you had wargs working in shifts on them.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 01:05 (nine years ago) link

Annoying that the witch in the flashback was a rumpled hottie instead of the horrible old crone of the books, does every little thing have to be sexy in this fuckin thing?

demonic mnevice (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 01:06 (nine years ago) link

Kinda annoyed me that I never got to see Tyrion wash his hands clean.

SUBTEXT, RAG!

Caved and watched all 4. Sort of wish the whole show had been paced like this.

Pretty good opening episode, even without any Arya scenes. One thing I noticed was that Winterfell is no longer a smoking ruin in the opening credits. Also, it's interesting to see that Daenerys is losing control of her dragons, and her role as the great white saviour is beginning to fall apart. This season, though, I'm mainly looking forward to the continuing adventures of Tyrion and Varys, and also them eventually meeting - and riding - the dragons.
Can't wait 'till next week... but I will.

they're really driving the King's Landing and Sansa plots pretty damn fast this season!

demonic mnevice (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 14:35 (nine years ago) link

so everyone's talking about the first 4 episodes now i guess

NO

resulting post (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 14:42 (nine years ago) link

we kind of can't and shouldn't. lol i guess there needs to be a new 'spoilers but only insofar as season 5 episode 4" thread.

demonic mnevice (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 14:43 (nine years ago) link

(i've only seen the first episode, fwiw)

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 14:45 (nine years ago) link

i have seen all four and i like the part when half-man adopts the smallest dragon

xpost fine to discuss S5 E1-4 in spoiler thread imo

resulting post (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 14:48 (nine years ago) link

Reckon I'm just going to stay away from all GoT threads from now on until I've caught up with the first four (which could be in the next few days if the GF has her way).

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 14:52 (nine years ago) link

i watched all four immediately and now find myself without anyone to chat with about them (aside from the gf, but she doesn't enjoy this kind of stuff on the same level as me).

i'm being good and not spoiling anything for anyone.

I'm naively hoping that Danerys can still control her dragons - mr veg wonders if third MIA dragon is the key ie her communicating through it to them when/if it ever returns

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 17:52 (nine years ago) link

feel like its something about her just having confidence and accepting her role as leader and mother of dragons like shes afraid of them so they dont trust her and so forth, she will no doubt have some sort of breakthrough prob via riding around on them

lag∞n, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 18:12 (nine years ago) link

would be kinda funny if the dragons just took off and never came back. like the whole thing with the dragons was just a shaggy dog story.

ryan, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 18:16 (nine years ago) link

I just assumed that the dragons have reached their teen years.

A-Hanisi Coates (Leee), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 18:21 (nine years ago) link

they're going to steal the family car and then crash it.

Not to mention their appetites at this age.

Tyrion will turn out to be a dragon whisperer.

the third dragon flew off to star in the concluding chapter of the hobbit trilogy iirc

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 18:35 (nine years ago) link

With all that wine in his belly, his breath will ignite a fire ball when a lit match come to close to his face, winning the dragon's trust.

Despite the leak, the first episode apparently had 1.4 million more viewers than last year's opener(!?).

If there isn't a scene with Daenerys riding on the back of Drogon, slicing heads off and roasting knights alive, I'm going to be very sad.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:41 (nine years ago) link

Drogon is such a terrible name for a dragon.

Here's my cat, Cot.

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:44 (nine years ago) link

it's in reference to khal drogo, her catatonia-ridden and then mercy-smothered dothraki husband

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:45 (nine years ago) link

which is why "drogo" would do just fine.

dying at "cot"

Evan, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:48 (nine years ago) link

ya, i had to explain to my coworkers why I was laughing. not as funny out loud.

AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:52 (nine years ago) link

basically because it would be impossible to yell at the cat without sounding like Sean Connery

Evan, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:53 (nine years ago) link

xxp there have to be Ns at the end of almost every targaryen name, esp. if there isn't an -ys at the end, it's like a valryian law idk i don't make the rules man

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:54 (nine years ago) link

one of the only immediate exceptions i can think of is rhaegal, one of her other dragons
