my marquee moon highlights:

1) getting the 12" single and playing it at Bri's house
2) getting the cd version and discovering it now has a full ending
3) getting the remaster and now there's an alternate version with a different solo

Would not pick one of these over the others...

I once heard "Marquee Moon" on an AM station while driving through western Ohio (this was maybe 5-6 years ago). Being unexpectedly hit with this song on the radio is one thing; hearing it on AM heightened the mystery of the song considerably.

If I'd known two other people would actually vote for that Polvo song, I'd've put it higher on my ballot. That song is a monster.

tbh my favourite Fairport epic is "Sloth" but just too short to qualify for this poll.

there is a richard thompson version of it on "the life and music of rt" - where he duets with linda - and it is 12:21. you are right it is quite lovely.

I think if you're listening to MM for the first time circa 2015, a lot of what's it's doing has been finally digested in the last decade of pop, post-Strokes, post-Franz Ferdinand, post-Phoenix - the way the tone of the different guitars trade off, the little filigree licks, the lack of blues in a non-thrashy way. Marquee Moon didn't really have guiding effect on overall presentation of dual-guitar bands between 78 and 98. While it's always been well adored, those that adored it were adding more noise or digital delay or compressed dynamics. It paved the way for U2 and Sonic Youth and MBV, but those bands took bits of the approach. Around 2000 is when I really started hearing Television borrowings wholesale, just like Gang of Four.

This poll got me to listen closely to Hendrix again, but Stevie Ray Vaughn really killed Voodoo Chile dead for me. I just cant hear Hendrix with an open mind. Something similar has happened to Television. Would likely have been on my list 10 years ago! But I didn't even feel like listening.

juggulo for the complete klvtz (bendy), Friday, 10 April 2015 17:38 (nine years ago) link

wonder how many of these were fairly 'tactical' e.g. 'The Crown' isn't really my favourite long song ever (top 50 sure) but nbd I knew it wouldn't get much love so...

well for me Mei by Echolyn had to be #1 because it's one of my favorite albums ever and I think it's in the spirit of the ballot to value things that are long and epic (compared to say, Autechre's "Rsdio", which I also voted for, but it's one that would've worked at say, 7 minutes)

my one big mistake on this was not nominating "USA" by Dan Deacon. cuz I think that would've been a top 3 pick for me.

The Crown was one of the last tunes I had to cut from my shortlist to trim it down to 50, now I feel bad for leaving it out, because it is awesome.

Tuomas, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:22 (nine years ago) link

But my vote for Biotrip wasn't tactical, I just wanted my #1 to be over 20 minutes so it's truly epic, and that's the best 20+ minute tune I know.

Tuomas, Friday, 10 April 2015 19:24 (nine years ago) link

I would have voted for The Crown if I'd noticed it on the list!

Great track - never heard it in its entirety.

I wonder what it was like happening upon that gig, probably having no idea who this guy was or that there was even somebody playing - let alone that he was about to drop the best epic of alltime.

listening to this now & i really, really want to flag post you

Jeff loads of good stuff on that ballot but what is Close to the Edge doing at no1? ;-)

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 11 April 2015 10:32 (nine years ago) link

yeah I listened to the Berio on that highest unplaced playlist & it were wonderful, need to chase down more

PORC EPIC SAVVAGE (imago), Saturday, 11 April 2015 10:33 (nine years ago) link

Actually giving it another go now. I like these as a pair:

18T. Yes - Close To The Edge - 8600 points | 9 votes | 2 #1 votes
18T. Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea - 8600 points | 11 votes

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 11 April 2015 10:33 (nine years ago) link

Actually Close to the Edge is much better than I remember, especially the organ break in the middle. The birds twittering at the end is clearly an acknowledgement of the up and coming green politics of the 1970s. "so progressiva" indeed!

this Dissidenten track is very great, whoever voted for it!

I'm loving Don Ellis Orchestra's "Turkish Bath". Why didn't I know about this record before?

Jeff W, Saturday, 11 April 2015 12:08 (nine years ago) link

^yeah this is great too, Spottie got me listening to Don Lewis a while back and I was similarly rapt back then

It was me who nommed the Dissidenten track, and I'm glad that someone else likes it. It's a Berlin-goes-to-Morocco fusion thing from 1984, which sounds ahead of its time to me.

mike t-diva, Saturday, 11 April 2015 12:28 (nine years ago) link

It sounded like New Order for about 3 seconds, then took flight, emitting more power than a substation - really wonderful, ty

My highest unplaced track (the live "Little Johnny Jewel") isn't on spotify, but "Meet me at the Jailhouse" is.

Mark G, Saturday, 11 April 2015 20:03 (nine years ago) link

i discovered the phantastic cortney tidwell track via the poll, her voice reminds me a lot of carolyn crawley (shelleyan orphan, this mortal coil), so pure and direct. "don't let stars keep us tangled up" is one of those comfort giving songs, almost like many neil young songs but in a completely different, more shining way.

the dissidenten were an offspring of embryo one of the early jazzy krautrock bands founded 1969 in munich (two years after amon düül). embryo had already been travellng a lot, they were probably the first world music band, the dissidenten which were called embryo's dissidenten in the beginning tried to appeal to a wider public and merged arab and indian music with dance pop. they were great but in the end they didn't have the success they should have had.

eleven months pass...

I've been listening to this this mix-CD I made for the car:

1. "Slipping (Into Something)," Feelies (6:00)
2. "When," Grachan Moncur III (12:08)
3. "Spiegel Im Spiegel," Arvo Pärt (10:38)
4. "Fur Immer (Forever)," Neu! (11:17)
5. "Quiet Nervousness," Manuel Göttsching (13:00)
6. "How Some Jellyfish Are Born, Yo La Tengo (8:22)
7. "Field of Stars," Oliver Schroer (8:15)
8. "Find a Way," Feelies (7:05)

Assembled in the spirit of this poll, basically, although no strict 10-minute rule. I've never cared about streaming; I rarely listen to music when I'm sitting at the computer. Music in a car, though, life would be considerably less interesting without it--especially long songs, especially driving out in the country.

Gawd, this thread is a goddamn treasure trove! My next few days (weeks) will be all about zoning out to long tracks.
(And listening to short tracks for Karl's poll, obvs.)

Very surprised that Blue Train is above All Blues, which I figured was a shoe-in for the top jazz track. Very surprised Deep Purple on there at all, didn't think they'd maintained a following comparable to Floyd or the Doors.
