so is he really just ignoring everything that happened at the end of last season? haven't checked but bringing the title music back suggests yes as much as anything

funny bits but too predictable an outcome with the pregnant woman and the lazy cartoon angry lesbian thing wasn't cool

are you really asking about plot continuity on Louie, in its 5th season?

i just don't think there's ever gonna be anything on the show that he's not willing to shake the etch-a-sketch on and just move on to the next unrelated story.

lazy cartoon angry lesbian seems more fair a characterisation if we accept that louie really is an asshole, which isn't so hard to do

only catching up with s4 now after binge-watching the whole thing but the whole pot-smoke flashback two-parter was a tour-de-force in comedy/not comedy writing. great acting too.

Ugh loathe adlon's character so much

it's partly the fact that she inspires so much loathing that I enjoy her character so much. their relationship means a lot to me, and I like that Pamela/Louie episodes tend to have a collaborative feel (bolstered by Adlon's story credits).

I feel like she brings the show to a dead halt. Once she appears everything more or less becomes an exercise in frustration (both for louie and the viewer) and that's p much all ya get.

the show has always done one-off episodes that don't call back to anything else or even exist in the same universe, but it was still weird to make that one the premiere

liked the Michael Rappaport episode a lot, best one of the season so far imo

the cop one was like the archetypal louie episode.

starts out in farcical mode, shifts to the comedy of embarrassment with an added element of social satire, but then becomes something much darker and weirder, and makes the most contemptible character a figure of pathos.

also, michael rappaport has let himself go :(

making a show where we're supposed to feel sorry for an ignorant, violent cop was more than a little ngggggggggghh
counterpoint that with the almost casual understanding-as-a-given the sheer incompetence of nypd.... the scene with a vanload of cops getting out in front of louis who all ignore the pistol on the ground in front of him seemed like it could be taken as serious thumb in the eye
but rappaport was convincing and the situation was compelling all the same

i don't know if we're supposed to feel sorry for him as much as be aware that he's trying to make us feel sorry for him.

i think the rappaport characters eventualy freak-out and howl of despair was anything but a plea for sympathy (even if the character was clearly intensely self-pitying). and louis ck depicted it almost clinically. i response with a mix of empathy and revulsion.

With respect to Rappaport's character, I'd say 'this is a character you're meant to see as a human being with layers' most definitely did not equate to 'this is a character you're meant to sympathize with'. Because that guy was like the archetype of people I go out of my way to avoid.

I laughed a lot at Louie's brother being convinced he was the older brother. I think he's quite funny in general.

Pamela is trying to be more realistic about their relationship, although her fears (about both of them being just barely still fuckable in mid-40s, "retarded tits" etc) come through very clearly---nevertheless, her hectoring zings etc.(as delivered, anyway) tend to make her seem like a hip variant on the standard sitcom buzzkill hottie wife-mom to the feckless underdog male.
