I was about to ask.

jesus fuck
welp now i know about sad puppies
i spose it makes sense so much of gaming's troublesome politics are pretty much handed down from sci-fi/fantasy/comic books anyway

i think forks is saying it's not "handed down" so much as they're on the same level, the sf/f and vg chuds are kinda pooping back & forth forever

Oh I didn't mean now I mean the larger "nerd culture" from which video games evolved out of has always has problematic elements historically

i basically think they're basically the same guy but one has a wizard cloak, one has a 1/64 scale lego deathstar and one has a realdoll

tbh I think it's just any culture that is or has become male-dominated
I think I had a long ranty bit on this thread or another about how, as a medium becomes more mainstream or interesting or profitable it becomes more colonized by men who consciously push women out. Like these pissbabies try to pretend video games have always been misogynistic shitfests but there are obvious counterexamples they don't want to acknowledge because it was before their hegemony came into play
― mh, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 14:54 (nine years ago) link
Blaming the "mainstream" feels like a way of letting a whole bunch of ppl off the hook, also the core of gamergate isn't CoD fans it's like pissed chronotrigger dudes w anime twitpics.
― kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 8 April 2015 14:59 (nine years ago) link
that's a good that was lost on me before; the fratty guys who play CoD are gonna largely end up with women in stable relationships, but the pissed chronotrigger dudes, who knows
― droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 8 April 2015 15:04 (nine years ago) link
Did those dudes exist when Chrono Trigger came out, though? Maybe they were just as misogynist and shitty, but they didn't have a social platform to pretend their views were the same as the people creating games.
I guess what I mean is that their personal views were irrelevant because there wasn't a community. I guess by "mainstream" I mean "public dialogue" where they could assert their supposed norms.
― mh, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 15:05 (nine years ago) link
tbf the fps dudes are still spewing the most toxic shit imaginable at each other in their shooters
― mh, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 15:07 (nine years ago) link
i don't understand people over the age of twentyone who still play FPS games and CoD especially
― Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 8 April 2015 15:10 (nine years ago) link
They absolutely existed in some capacity when CT came out. I probably fit the bill at the time (to an extent, I don't think I could be cruel like these types but bear w/ me). The difference is, I wasn't weaponized. I was just a dumb awkward teen who "didn't understand girls" or whatever. But I was perfectly polite to them on the fanfic website I wrote on & on IRC & etc. because (a) nobody was telling me feminists wanted to take it away, (b) people weren't as easy to internet stalk, (c) there wasn't a constant feedback loop of drama and information like twitter which virtually emulates obsession & trains it into people i think
xxp

it's easier on the hands to do so on console than PC
everyone I know who's an old complains about playing fps games on pc
― mh, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 15:11 (nine years ago) link
Will is right, I thought myself fairly even-handed but I definitely thought of women as incomprehensible at some level and believed a lot of weird misogynist thing just for the fact of not having a very diverse friend group and being pretty insulated

i realized yesterday that when i was 17, the internet was glowing green CRT monitors and IRC and it wasn't until I was 19 that Netscape and "the information superhighway" became a real thing so i may be the absolute last generation to escape the influence of the web on my teens. Old enough to have ducked a bullet, young enough to understand what came after

do we need a chrono trigger warning itt?
― bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 15:31 (nine years ago) link
I think I managed to dodge that bullet too, even though by the time we had a PC w/ web capabilities Netscape was already available... but it wasn't until I was 15 or so that the forced moderation of 30 hrs/month for the whole family of internet was no longer a thing. my brother is 8y my junior & while I think he's an ok guy (prob closer to the tumblr team than the 4chan team in the coming internet civil war) he absolutely grew up with infinite internet & easy-access cultural microculture & it shows kinda in the way he acts.
xp chrono trigger is not a cause, merely a milestone
xxp ha

my first exposure to using the internet was my freshman year of college on b+w monitors in the "computer lab" which was thirty pcs in a basementi did light flirting with a stranger from australia and it BLEW MY MINDi cannot imagine what growing up with the contemporary web must do to the mind of the average teenager. i would've gone completely insane.

tbh for my teenage kids the "contemporary web" just means minecraft videos on youtube and email to friends. also maybe naked people but that's not really for me to know
― droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 8 April 2015 16:08 (nine years ago) link
For kids younger than a certain age, the internet is completely obscured by applications and there's no real web access, yeah
― mh, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 16:27 (nine years ago) link
Did those dudes exist when Chrono Trigger came out, though?
Probably not to the same degree tbh, but I feel like Chrono Trigger as a "thing"/classic is as much due to its enshrinement since emulation and widespread Internet. I mean most of the people with Chrono Trigger icons presumably did not play it on a physical SNES/Super Famicom, right? Not that I blame Chrono Trigger or emulators for anything, but there's definitely some "board culture" thing for which avatars taken from emulated 16-bit classix is about as appropriate a shorthand as any other.
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 17:35 (nine years ago) link
if my implied point wasn't clear above, whatever else the internet did it also gave agency to shared bad behavior framed around games/sci-fi/sharpies/whatevs
― Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 8 April 2015 17:49 (nine years ago) link
Not even just 'bad behavior' but anti-social behavior in general. Add to that schizophrenic and hormonally influenced teenage mood swings and now having an outlet for when you get home after you've been bullied. I remember being bullied and just sitting in my room thinking about it and not being able to do anything but just contemplate that this is now my life. I have to go to school tomorrow and see this person. If I had the internet at the time I probably would have been flinging shit right back at them.

the internet has certainly birthed a whole genre of trolling-as-entertainment. i mean, i came across this guy's one tweet:
https://twitter.com/PhilSandifer/status/585613555631837184
and look at the responses
and if you check the guy's mentions, they're still going:
https://twitter.com/search?q=philsandifer&src=typd&vertical=default&f=tweets
this is one of the biggest cognitive dissonances between gg/"these people" and normall-ass people who use the internet (overlaid, but not the same as, the basic left-right diffs) -- a whole lot of people on the internet/in games/in tech just have a basic experience of it as a place where you are constantly fucking around and messing with people. like, that's just what you do. it's what the environment is for. if you take it seriously, you've "lost," but in another way, you've just misunderstood what this place is
you see this all the time when GG people half-blame all the bad shit that's happened (even to some of them!) as the work of "3rd party trolls," and then half-justify it all by saying, hey, it's the internet, what do you expect? as if the greater chan universe is just what the internet is.
but for your average person, or your average woman more accurately, to get on twitter and suddenly get these people's attention and deal with a good hateblast of violent creepery, it's, well, it's the whole issue we're dealing with
― goole, Wednesday, 8 April 2015 18:36 (nine years ago) link
tbh "a place where you are constantly fucking around and messing with people" is how a lot of posters treat this place, or used to treat this place before they left
I sorta thought/think that those were people who just didn't have much to say, mixed with self-loathing, but w/e, it's just (to me a mostly shitty) part of posting here

the other weekend i escorted a friend to an anime convention and won an unreal tournament tournament against a bunch of kids who obviously wanted to be playing something else
