7.8 - Captures the end of the season

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 1 April 2015 07:10 (nine years ago) link

A WOC - and an electronic musician, no less (is this a first?) - gets a BNM today. http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/20450-dark-energy/

bae sremmurd (monotony), Thursday, 2 April 2015 05:32 (nine years ago) link

no capt-save-a-fork here but just flipping idly through the BNM reviews it seems like females, electronic musicians and female electronic musicians are pretty well-represented in BNM. women of color who are electronic musicians less so, last one i saw was FKA twigs back in august. but they only bestow BNM like every other week or something?

I still want to know why the Vampire Weekend guy was cut out of the piece.

I assume because Batmanglij is of Iranian heritage and the others are South Asian?

jaymc, Thursday, 2 April 2015 06:42 (nine years ago) link

oh cool I've basically spent the last week raving about that album to anyone who will listen

The Reverend, Thursday, 2 April 2015 06:58 (nine years ago) link

That will have been known by the author. The line was too easily misinterpreted as throwing shade at Batmanglij and Khan, i think.

Yeah any indie track there is a dud; you've gotta go for something the crowd can sing along to. It's sports, a time for us to drop pretensions and share collective emotions. If you feel the need to be standoffish in that context you're beyond repair. Might as well give up and write for Pitchfork.

I'd go for "Friday" myself.

There's 2 "indie" bands on there, Led Savy Fav and Oh Sees which both rock and are catchy as hell

yes, I'm sure a Decemberists show evokes the same level of hysteria as a One Direction show.

for realz, just lemme know when ilx-centric reviews pop up, cuz i swear they are the best to read. and they usually aren't 4000 dreary words on the new album by some dreary thing i don't want to hear. this is a really good rock review!

The band's singer was about as happy about that writeup as you might expect. From Twitter:

"i don't speak spanish so idk what's happening and i don't I like it" - Pitchfork + most major music publications on songs w/ spanish lyrics

"My Spanish is shot, but I figure Victoria Ruiz is meant to be understood better through her energy than her words anyway" seriously guys?

Gonna put in our next press release that our songs are actually in a made up language mix of Elvish + Icelandic I bet they'll translate that

"we could have easily looked up what these Spanish words meant ANYWHERE but we don't care enough to do so because English is better"

yeah wow, that's not a well written review.

A moratorium, please, on comparing synthy indie records to John Hughes soundtracks, especially as most of them don't actually sound like John Hughes soundtracks.
