post you had fecund thoughts about (darraghmac), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 14:33 (nine years ago) link

I never got into twitter cause I had no idea what to write, ever. I admire writers in general because a blank canvas is really daunting to me.

Evan, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 14:38 (nine years ago) link

use the standard joke templates

lag∞n, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 14:38 (nine years ago) link

is there a wiki for that?

Evan, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 14:42 (nine years ago) link

ha prob

lag∞n, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 14:43 (nine years ago) link

you can start opinionating about things in the news but be careful to never explicitly note what you're talking about. this keeps some mystery alive for your followers who aren't reading the same things you are.

ryan, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 14:43 (nine years ago) link

opinionating through standard joke format is also acceptable.

ryan, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 14:44 (nine years ago) link

Just imagine you're in your forties, father of two, consistently behind one month on mortgage payments…

then suddenly, tweets like "Why didn't they call rotary phones 'digital phones' since your finger did the most work with those?" will suddenly spring to life.

pplains, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 14:48 (nine years ago) link

i used to not get twitter but then i realized its function is finding random nerds with similar interests to you and outsourcing your opinions/scraping of the internet to them. i even have twitter "friends" that DM me about economics and math stuff now. weird twitter is ok but gets old, the whole (music)critic nexus of savvy young ppl making flip cultural observations is pretty horrifying, there's way too much "media criticism" in general and even a master of the form like heer jest can get annoying with that shit. the social justice stuff can be good but a lot of the star feeds are way too high frequency. following ppl who post a lot of graphs and charts is cool, like that demography guy. same for like, wildlife or nature photos. i follow a few hardline communists for some reason, one of whom is a former ilxor and mtl hipster LOL

flopson, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 15:19 (nine years ago) link

The mute function is key I find

You gotta take your feed by the reins and curate the heck out of it

, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 15:22 (nine years ago) link

my feed has evolved to something that really suits me: handful of sports guys/gals who aren't annoying, handful of movie guys/gals who aren't annoying, academic presses, smaller record labels, musicians. good way to be exposed to *content* that may interest me.

ryan, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 15:23 (nine years ago) link

Feel like the weird Twitter krew just treat Twitter like an irc chat room now

It's like meeting everyday at the Seinfeld cafe they're a bunch of Twitter olds now lol

flopson, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 15:23 (nine years ago) link

Been on it for a week - twitter feed is a mix: from old ilx/Live Journal to following a lot of arts and lit based stuff that means I don't need my bookmarks/subscribe to emails anymore.

Have bought Finnegans Wake on the basis of its account - which extracts a line from it every few mins. Fools you into thinking its an easy read.

lag∞n, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 15:49 (nine years ago) link

I thought it would take away my energies from ilx-ing but at the moment I am still posting on here. xp

there's also something about the smug way "intellectualism" is performed on twitter that really puts me off...like that seemingly patient, here let me break it down for you 140 characters at a time kind of thing.

ryan, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 16:19 (nine years ago) link

worst part might be people "discovering" political thought and opining about it in the most vapid ways and then getting retweeted by people who find them visionary

mh, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 16:21 (nine years ago) link

i like twitter essays more stuff shld be written in bullet pt form imo

flopson, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 16:21 (nine years ago) link

also i really like the thing phil elverum said about twitter, that just the mechanics of reading it mean you can say “Here, think this thought really quick”, can super directly convey something abstract in this really open context, space, people's attention span so wide & then specific. like the language part of it is really lovely, i think, to have access to this fragmentary branch of somebody's thoughts.

tender is the late-night daypart (schlump), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 16:22 (nine years ago) link

what the form really needs is someone really gifted at this genre: A Thread for Posting Brutally Pessimistic Quotes by Anguished Philosophers

ryan, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 16:23 (nine years ago) link

ryan - def feel you but those ppl would be smug in any format tbrr
