(and the one i voted for was voted very high)

Voted for DJ Sprinkles, I'm glad it made the top 100. Nice to see Mingus here too, though "Black Saint" is not my favourite, I voted for a different track. And I was similarly confused as Charlie H on why it was nominated as a whole album, since it's clearly a multi-part suite.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 11:25 (nine years ago) link

Really annoyed with myself I didn't manage to vote. Just so ridiculously busy right now. You guys had better've voted for lots of kraut.

emil.y, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 11:47 (nine years ago) link

lol I even forgot Hallogallo let alone all the other kraut, hopefully others have picked up the slack (I have a sorta-kraut at number 2 tho)

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 12:00 (nine years ago) link

2 Neu! and 2 Faust on my ballot. You're welcome.

Gimme Gimme Pop Secret (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 13:01 (nine years ago) link

Good stuff so far! Didn't vote for 'Impact' but I love the live version from the 'Satan Live' CD single.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 13:37 (nine years ago) link

"my generation" was much better than i thought it'd be, and although i'm not well-disposed to live versions of shorter songs making it into this poll, this is clearly something very different to the original

It was my #1, and yeah, it's just a completely different animal to the studio recording.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 13:53 (nine years ago) link

So far three of mine -- Who, Mingus, Scott Walker -- have made the list.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 13:53 (nine years ago) link

Pfff...if you can sit through that Scott Walker song, you are a better man than I am.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 14:45 (nine years ago) link

I'd be surprised if there was a funnier epic than "Zercon" on this poll.

Laaaabor Daaay!

rock (Jack White, Coldplay) (imago), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 15:20 (nine years ago) link

. and no dinner!

Mark G, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 15:27 (nine years ago) link

a bit of confusion there with the Mingus: were people who voted for it voting for the entire album or the side-long suite, Trio and Group Dancers? i couldn't tell when i saw it on the song list, which is why i left it alone.

Yeah I was kind of panicked about this one when I was compiling results, decided that maybe ilxors knew what they were doing and just picked a single track with qualifying time.

A-Hanisi Coates (Leee), Tuesday, 31 March 2015 16:37 (nine years ago) link

ugh, dislike that Les Rallizes Dénudés intensely. A dull, lo-fi guitar jam is all I hear. An epic should, you know, DO something with it's running time. Hope there's not too much more like that in the countdown.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 31 March 2015 18:47 (nine years ago) link

Argh forgot to vote in this. Pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of the Fiery Furnaces.

Water Get No Enemy and Krautrock are my second and third to show up. Frankie is one of my big regrettable oversights (along w Starla) (though I might post a quick rundown of shit I forgot to nominate in the campaigning thread when this is done)

yeah I listened to the Berio on that highest unplaced playlist & it were wonderful, need to chase down more

18T. Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea - 8600 points | 11 votes

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 11 April 2015 10:33 (nine years ago) link

Actually Close to the Edge is much better than I remember, especially the organ break in the middle. The birds twittering at the end is clearly an acknowledgement of the up and coming green politics of the 1970s. "so progressiva" indeed!

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 11 April 2015 10:47 (nine years ago) link

this Dissidenten track is very great, whoever voted for it!

I'm loving Don Ellis Orchestra's "Turkish Bath". Why didn't I know about this record before?

Jeff W, Saturday, 11 April 2015 12:08 (nine years ago) link

^yeah this is great too, Spottie got me listening to Don Lewis a while back and I was similarly rapt back then

PORC EPIC SAVVAGE (imago), Saturday, 11 April 2015 12:11 (nine years ago) link

It was me who nommed the Dissidenten track, and I'm glad that someone else likes it. It's a Berlin-goes-to-Morocco fusion thing from 1984, which sounds ahead of its time to me.

mike t-diva, Saturday, 11 April 2015 12:28 (nine years ago) link

My highest unplaced track (the live "Little Johnny Jewel") isn't on spotify, but "Meet me at the Jailhouse" is.

Mark G, Saturday, 11 April 2015 20:03 (nine years ago) link

i discovered the phantastic cortney tidwell track via the poll, her voice reminds me a lot of carolyn crawley (shelleyan orphan, this mortal coil), so pure and direct. "don't let stars keep us tangled up" is one of those comfort giving songs, almost like many neil young songs but in a completely different, more shining way.

the dissidenten were an offspring of embryo one of the early jazzy krautrock bands founded 1969 in munich (two years after amon düül). embryo had already been travellng a lot, they were probably the first world music band, the dissidenten which were called embryo's dissidenten in the beginning tried to appeal to a wider public and merged arab and indian music with dance pop. they were great but in the end they didn't have the success they should have had.

eleven months pass...

I've been listening to this this mix-CD I made for the car:

1. "Slipping (Into Something)," Feelies (6:00)
2. "When," Grachan Moncur III (12:08)
3. "Spiegel Im Spiegel," Arvo Pärt (10:38)
4. "Fur Immer (Forever)," Neu! (11:17)
5. "Quiet Nervousness," Manuel Göttsching (13:00)
6. "How Some Jellyfish Are Born, Yo La Tengo (8:22)
7. "Field of Stars," Oliver Schroer (8:15)
8. "Find a Way," Feelies (7:05)

Assembled in the spirit of this poll, basically, although no strict 10-minute rule. I've never cared about streaming; I rarely listen to music when I'm sitting at the computer. Music in a car, though, life would be considerably less interesting without it--especially long songs, especially driving out in the country.

Very surprised that Blue Train is above All Blues, which I figured was a shoe-in for the top jazz track. Very surprised Deep Purple on there at all, didn't think they'd maintained a following comparable to Floyd or the Doors.
