i feel like a lot of pop albums have been preceded by "this is my most personal/timeless to date" talk only for the lead single to be something like this, i assume it's trolling and am amused accordingly

lex pretend, Thursday, 26 March 2015 19:08 (nine years ago) link

anything that sounds dated now will be a nostalgic banger in ten years

nose, Thursday, 26 March 2015 20:15 (nine years ago) link

just want to say this is better than 'all day' and 'worst behavior'

I will co-sign on it being better than "all day" at least

will also co-sign on it being trolling

Her green fur coat and boots were impressive, but "money" still hasn't won me over. Perez Hilton loves it though...

curmudgeon, Monday, 30 March 2015 18:08 (nine years ago) link

bravo for alluding to a slightly forgotten early nineties rumpshaker that I heard a million times a day in Miami

btw ILM knows what I think of Rihanna generally but the use of "Diamonds" in this scene is so ideal that I love the tune now:

Well, "This is my most personal" sells better to the public and your fanbase than "this is a collection of radio bangers and whatever StarGate and Dr. Luke had lying around their studio floor when I stopped by"

Greer, Monday, 30 March 2015 18:36 (nine years ago) link

Pop singers who specialize in thumpers use "personal" as a disinfectant to wipe the supposed impersonality of the machines or something (Madonna sued to say this shit all the time).

i like Rihanna right now. she sounds fresh. i don't have many problems with Bitch Better Have My Money, American Oxygen or FourFiveSeconds. BBHMM and American Oxygen are tops.

surm, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 13:46 (nine years ago) link

Pour It Up sounds very different to me, i wouldn't put it in the same bucket as Bitch Better Have My Money

surm, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 13:48 (nine years ago) link

Bitch Better Have My Money has grown on me 100%

American Oxygen is turgid trash, where is the Rihanna who slyly cheered against the US in every World Cup match

Still better than fourfiveseconds obv

lex pretend, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 16:49 (nine years ago) link

american oxygen isn't a real rihanna song

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 7 April 2015 17:17 (nine years ago) link

who slyly cheered against the US

somehow i don't think that was exactly biting political commentary on her part, more like a troll (which, for the record, is fine as far as i'm concerned)

i wouldn't go far as to call "oxygen" trash but it's def not her lane.

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 17:34 (nine years ago) link

*go so far

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 17:37 (nine years ago) link

wow i just heard it and it's pretty bad, the production in particular is awful

dyl, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 18:59 (nine years ago) link

it reminded me of ny state of mind but you know abt ALL OF AMERICA

gotta say I like 4,5 seconds tho

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 19:16 (nine years ago) link

bitch better have my money is like, dope. that's pretty much all i have to say about it. it's v Caribbean. and i think most people will be grateful that i have something to listen to besides Tinashe now.

i dunno, i'm a sucker for American Oxygen. i like her in front of that flag.

my new British intern asked that i play "Unfaithful" yesterday, i think we're going to get along just fine.

i'm hitting a bit of a wall when it comes to recommending songs to my nephew-in-law. He's 9, and gay, and out to his parents (awesome kid.) so he emails me song recommendations and vice versa, but i don't know where the line is. on the one hand, i don't want to recommend that he listen to "bitch better have my money," because he's like, 9. on the other hand, at our last Thanksgiving, he started singing Lana del Rey's "i fucked my way up to the top" in the middle of dinner. so. hard call.

surm, Thursday, 9 April 2015 13:41 (nine years ago) link

wow

what does he recommend to you? if he keeps up w/ music Rihanna is most likely already very on his radar so he may know it anyway?

johnny crunch, Thursday, 9 April 2015 13:48 (nine years ago) link

yeah i bet he does - he does listen to Rihanna. and his mom already told me that she really doesn't care about it. currently he's been into Marina and like, random Calvin Harris feature songs. so i'm trying to steer him in the right direction. but he's recommended some good shit in the past. finally got him to listen to Cassie Cassie.

eheh, reminds me of my girl cousins who were around that age a few years ago and during a family gathering were singing a very famous song in France at the time "Parle à ma main", including the disturbing line : "Les mecs ils sont tous nuls ils pensent qu'à nous mettre des doigts" (guys all suck, they only want to finger us") !

i listened to this song 3 times this morning before 9am and 1 of them included wake 'n bake and fresh coffee and it was like breakfast

surm, Friday, 24 April 2015 06:26 (nine years ago) link

i have yet to hear it in the wild, and can only faintly remember the couple times i listened to it on the internet when it was new.

frogteasip (some dude), Friday, 24 April 2015 09:36 (nine years ago) link

if the charts are anything to go by then the public is really not taking to "american oxygen" at all, in which case public otm

dyl, Friday, 24 April 2015 12:13 (nine years ago) link

Is that one even being promoted to radio? That and "James Joint" didn't seem like an official part of the singles campaign along with "Seconds" and "Bitch"

frogteasip (some dude), Friday, 24 April 2015 14:32 (nine years ago) link

she released "american oxygen" for the ncaa tournament

J0rdan S., Friday, 24 April 2015 15:01 (nine years ago) link

the only part that turns me off really is "WE sweat for a nickel and a dime"

rly?

surm, Friday, 24 April 2015 15:55 (nine years ago) link

dyl, Friday, 24 April 2015 16:52 (nine years ago) link

i still haven't found bitch bhmm in the wild yet either

ps i haven't heard this james joint

surm, Friday, 24 April 2015 16:59 (nine years ago) link

luv bbhm$ now, feel like it shd be a total summer jam or at least it will be for me personally

johnny crunch, Friday, 24 April 2015 17:10 (nine years ago) link

on three occasions diff acquaintances of mine have sung the bbhm$ hook while idling and when i asked them if they like the song they all shrugged lol nah not really tbh

in conclusion it's like a very effective vine preview appetizer, in my world of ambiguously annuated people at least

r|t|c, Friday, 24 April 2015 17:29 (nine years ago) link

tbh i don't think I've heard it for more than a vine's loop of time since the very first time i listened

deej loaf (D-40), Friday, 24 April 2015 17:36 (nine years ago) link

He's 9, and gay, and out to his parents (awesome kid.)

sorry but I don't think it's possible for a kid of 9 to know what their sexuality is

well no one asked you, friend

brosario nawson (m bison), Friday, 24 April 2015 18:24 (nine years ago) link

James Joint is amazing and p gorgeous, which bodes well considering it's an "interlude". Thinking abt going out hunting for Bbhmm in the wild

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Saturday, 25 April 2015 02:15 (nine years ago) link

Oh and American Oxygen is good, esp for one of those bombastic "meaningful" cinematic (ws it consciously written for that Empire show?) pop tracks. Love the bizarre production. P puzzled by 45Seconds tbh, "unfinished" sounds right and Kanye's verse abt going to jail is just silly

can confirm this bangs at house parties

lex pretend, Tuesday, 14 July 2015 19:21 (eight years ago) link

she's had some pretty ropey hits, even if you're not into "umbrella" i can't imagine it being one of her, say, 5 worst surely

lex pretend, Tuesday, 14 July 2015 19:22 (eight years ago) link

eh yeah more middling i guess

some dude, Tuesday, 14 July 2015 19:27 (eight years ago) link

radio here cuts out the instrumental part toward the end and the song is very lacking w/o it

dyl, Tuesday, 14 July 2015 22:02 (eight years ago) link

I've been playing the Joey Labeija remix (which seems to have been disappeared from soundcloud, so I can't link) out instead of the original

The Reverend, Wednesday, 15 July 2015 06:50 (eight years ago) link

if "umbrella" isn't her best song what is? this live soundboard i've had for 7 years of her covering "is this love" doesn't count.

lol I didn't realize she released albums almost exactly a year apart for 4 years in a row, like mid-to-late November of 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and then nothing in 3 years

Ina-Garten-Da-Vida (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 04:23 (eight years ago) link

Yep, she was almost up there with Electric 6 in her ability to put out a new album every year.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 04:27 (eight years ago) link

If you count the re-release of Good Girl Gone Bad in '08, she technically put something out every year for 8 years

anyway it looks like this album might be coming out on friday
