"I'm gonna give the gold one to Harris since he's been on the force for 30 years, but Nelson should get this athletic one after that case he solved last year."

"Oh, you're always watching the detectives, aren't you?"

I had a spilled coffee scare yesterday that made me realize that someday I'm going to have to replace my 2011 Macbook pro but going through Apple's configurator for laptops is kind of bumming me out.

I've got a 128gb SSD for the OS and a 500gb HDD for storage in this thing, with 16gb of ram. But getting anything close to this starts getting astronomically expensive and you basically have to max stuff out at purchase time now because every single thing is permanently soldered in, right? Can you replace stuff in the standard, non-retina Macbook Pro? I don't want to pay an extra $600 for a 1TB SSD from apple if I can wait a year and buy one for $200 elsewhere.

i'm in the same boat. it almost makes me want to get a PC so i can do basic modifications by myself.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 2 April 2015 15:07 (nine years ago) link

no the SSD drive in new macbooks is not a drive in the standard sense (i.e. it's not a standard form factor). it's chips soldered on the motherboard.

kind of impressed they just bypassed serial ATA completely and it's straight PCI express bus

I got the last of the 15" non-retinas, and was able to drop a TB SSD into it for a couple hundred bucks.

schwantz, Thursday, 2 April 2015 17:01 (nine years ago) link

Basically I'm mad because I can't get a Macbook Air with a 1TB SSD, 16GB of ram, and a retina display for $1000

joygoat, Thursday, 2 April 2015 17:02 (nine years ago) link

a faster processor/graphics card wouldn't hurt, either

mh, Thursday, 2 April 2015 18:05 (nine years ago) link

Picked up one of those bluetooth Logitech keyboards for my iPad mini and it's... a shockingly respectable ultra-portable? Was getting worked up about the weight of the 15" MBP that's been home base, but this setup just might do it.

Spent about 30 mins with a few of the watches today. MI REVIEW:

* It's really light and tiny. The small one is way too small (and I don't have big wrists). Compared to my G-Shock it's much smaller and feels much lighter. They could have had a bigger-batteried and heavier one without worrying, I think
* It's a bit uncomfortable: to feel the taptic engine or for it to pick it your heartrate it needs to be tightly strapped to you, but that feels awkward to me; I wear my watches quite loose.
* It's pretty slow and laggy at quite a lot of things. Anything that talks to the phone brings up a spinner
* It's quite hard to tap the right things on the screen
* It really doesn't know what it wants to be - they've flung all the possible uses they can think of at it, and it really does feel a bit unfocused as a result. * There's also six different interaction models, and none feels quite right.
* Siri seems *way* better than it is on the phone, dictation worked pretty well.
* The rubber strap is pretty cheap feeling
* The Milanese loop is nice but thinner and lighter than you expect
* The leather loop is lovely
* Having used it, I'm not at left with the "NEED IT NOW" sense you get with the other big hits. I could wait a while for this, poss even v2. The idea of getting one of the very expensive ones seems risible.

I know it's SOP for apple stuff but I always lol that these pieces start out with the writer establishing their cred like "I have have owned over 50 iPhones. I own a pair of New Balances that Steve Jobs wore that I got off of eBay"

Can you get the beach ball to spin exactly once per minute? Make it functional while it's not working right.

mh, Monday, 13 April 2015 16:38 (nine years ago) link

did it ever occur to anyone that he plans to fashion these tweets into a new bracelet that he can wear as a studied reminder that he does not want to ever be a publicly whining baby on twitter again?

That's not very Punk Rock.

Actually it kinda is.
