That's an element of that, but what he's doing goes so far beyond simple maintenance. He's on track for 12-15 mixtapes in a year

Evan R, Thursday, 19 March 2015 20:34 (nine years ago) link

I think he has 9 new ones out this year already.

longneck, Thursday, 19 March 2015 21:14 (nine years ago) link

Some brave soul should compile a year-end best of in December

i haven't listened to a new gucci mane mixtape since... 2012?

flopson, Thursday, 19 March 2015 21:27 (nine years ago) link

i listened to 'zone 6 to duval' today. his new stuff doesn't come even in the same ballpark at that era

deej loaf (D-40), Thursday, 19 March 2015 21:27 (nine years ago) link

i have a personal boycott against this new stuff for a number of reasons i suggest you all join me

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 March 2015 21:40 (nine years ago) link

The slew of mixtapes seems more like a ridiculously transparent attempt to maintain some relevance whilst incarcerated, not sure it's working though and as I read somewhere recently he could perhaps learn from Lil Boosie in that respect.

i wouldn't assume that much or any of this is happening with his full consent

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 March 2015 21:41 (nine years ago) link

There was an article maybe half a year ago that explained how these tapes are made. The gist, if I recall, was that the producers compile the songs, but Gucci still calls the shots and essentially has final edit, even from behind bars—that he suggests themes, points out which verses go with which choruses, where guests belong, etc. I'm guessing that account overstated how active Gucci is in the whole process; he's probably not quite as hands on as all that, but at the very least this is all happening with his consent

Evan R, Thursday, 19 March 2015 21:45 (nine years ago) link

i have trouble believing gucci was putting together projects with raury and andy milonakis but idk maybe he needs teh $

deej loaf (D-40), Thursday, 19 March 2015 21:48 (nine years ago) link

gucci has no involment in all this new stuff.

ANU (sisilafami), Thursday, 19 March 2015 21:51 (nine years ago) link

Even if he doesn't sweat the artistic details, I think he's still very much in the loop about the business details. His mixtape empire is a machine that he built, and it's in his best interest to keep it running.

There's also a great anecdote in some article about Young Thug about how one of the labels courting Thug just assumed they could pluck him, since there was no way 1017 had all its legal contracts in order, but sure enough, 1017 did. It's a more orderly operation than it sometimes seems on the surface

Burn One: Gucci had like this childlike wonderment with his music. This enthusiasm and energy. Just giddy. When he would write a line that he thought was clever or something he would just start laughing, like a little kid if they just cracked a little joke or something, you know? He got off on his own stuff. Not in an egotistical way, but like, “Man, that was cool. Look at what I did with that right there,” or whatever. He was amused by himself. He would say stuff to get a rise out of himself and other people. I was inspired just seeing his inspiration in it.

good

lag∞n, Sunday, 24 July 2016 03:02 (seven years ago) link

I'd say it's better than most of what he has released since 2010. It's far from perfect, though. It lacks burrrrr and everyone (including the producers) meet in the middle, so it's rarely exciting, just focused. Guwop Home has got to be his best single in a while though. Before he went in, he and Thug mainly co-existed on tracks. Now there's a sort of magic happening, even though it's mainly because thug found his voice while gucci was away.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Sunday, 24 July 2016 07:38 (seven years ago) link

i'm kinda disappointed for the most part he's not rapping as good as on his features for dreezy and kodak black...

ANU (sisilafami), Sunday, 24 July 2016 09:02 (seven years ago) link

His rapping is fine imo - it's just in a declarative mode for the most part. My main problem with it is that too
many of the songs are trying to do the same thing sonically. When Thug shows up he pushes everything towards the edges. This album could need a bit more of that.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Sunday, 24 July 2016 10:09 (seven years ago) link

rapping is fine but not up to '09 gucci level.
this on the other hand...

was there anything of note in those dozen mixtapes of leftovers that 1017 Records released in 2015?

Nothing essential, but most of those tapes were way better than you'd expect given the circumstances. Save a total bomb or two most were about on par with Brick Factory. Trap House 5 was good.

Evan R, Sunday, 24 July 2016 14:38 (seven years ago) link

I was hoping for a return akin to his 2012 Trap Back/Trap God second renaissance, but little here is anywhere near that caliber. There's an emotional immediacy to the album that I like, though. I'm excited to hear him rap more about sobriety and self-actualization and the difficulties of sustaining both.

And he does sound happy on the tracks he wrote after prison, so I see why so many people are connecting with the album. It puts me in a good mood, why hasn't been the case with most of his stuff since 2014.
