uh, maybe it's just that the singles are so so great

it's got classic singles, sure.

i'm amazed that "The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill" didn't get a single vote. how i love that song!

i mean srsly wtf tho.
When I was like ten I thought that Lauryn Hill had like the most comprehensively beautiful voice and that everyone else should just quit now; consolidated.

I edited out all the schoolkid bits in iTunes and have a version without them as a result, but short of that, not really.

"Ex-Factor" still is, in point of fact, one of the greatest songs ever.

this entire album is amazing. only ones that i don't listen to consistently are When It Hurts So Bad and Final Hour
― Alex in Montreal, Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:27 (2 years ago) Permalink
I kinda don't enjoy the middle of the album at all but the beginning and end are totally sublime

i love "final hour" - love the mystic, visionary tinge to her righteousness on it

Never quite got the love for "Ex Factor," possibly because of the strain she puts her voice through.

What does it for me personally is when she starts repeating "care for me, care for me" etc. - emotional lyrical repetition always gets to me.

and "it's funny how money change a situation" one of the best opening lines ever, especially delivered like that

or lol indeed:
"Lost One." Even though I loved the Fugees album, I was unprepared by how fierce this song was. What a great first track.

i know right - the no-nonsense beat and then that cold, contemptuous "it's funny how money change a situation" BAM.

i love love love this album. if i had voted for this poll i don't even know what i would have voted for. and yes, lost ones is an amazing opening track. once i misheard the line as "you just lost won."

I really think "Superstar" could have been an 'incredible' song instead of just a 'good' one if they had replaced the Doors-interpolation chorus with something a lot better. the verses are so much better.

"Without you I go through withdrawal, 'cause nothing even matters... at all."
-- still one of my favorite love songs. Nihilism as bliss-out and vice versa.
― Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:03 (2 years ago) Permalink
it's a shame that a lot of the neo-soul that came out the decade after paled in comparison to this album.

How you gon' win when you ain't right within?
I never really gave this any proper attention back in the day, other than the singles, but now I am and feeling I should have done so sooner. Although I'm annoyed the version I'm listening to seems to be quite censored, I don't think I've ever actually heard an explicit version of any of the singles? (Featuring "fuck" and "niggas", I mean)
― ha ha ha ha jack my swag (boxedjoy), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 22:31 (2 years ago) Permalink
it's censored on the album too
(there are several key r. kelly singles that never seem to have had explicit versions released, too)
