No, but it makes it easier for certain people to.

Cousin Slappy, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 07:04 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, get off cloud cuckoo land. It has nothing to do with her being black, people don't like her because she's a mean-spirited bitch that likes annoying people on twitter.

she is tremendously unlikeable but FOH with that kind of shit, her haters are bad enough to make you sympathize w/ her which is saying something

deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 17 March 2015 08:41 (nine years ago) link

Moka, if you're not one of those people, then why the harsh reaction for me stating a simple fact? I was only pointing out that there is a sub-set of people who would check for Iggy Azelea before they check for Azealia Banks, based on the fact that one is white and easier to digest/empathise with. Are you really going to deny that?

Cousin Slappy, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 08:55 (nine years ago) link

Of course race is relevant but the Lorde comparison is weak.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 09:50 (nine years ago) link

I'm sorry, slappy. I was actually mad at Banks not at you.

I don't understand what Iggy Azelea's popularity vs Banks based on race has anything to do in here right now, or think I didn't understand your question. The question she was being asked is if people reading her Twitter account wouldn't like her because she's black. She says yes, it's all about race. I think it's bullshit. People don't like her because she likes posting mean-spirited tweets and confronting anyone that dares engage her. She thinks people perceives her as angrier than Lorde? No shit, I doubt Lorde (or Iggy Azalea for the matter) spends half her day beefing with people on twitter. Race has nothing to do with her likability, at least on twitter.

It's a stupid answer but it's also a weird question to bring up. I'm sure the interviewers did their research and knew how easy it would be to just throw that bait in there for her.

Front of House with that kinda shit, inDEED.

toucan orca ink (how's life), Tuesday, 17 March 2015 12:07 (nine years ago) link

Lorde is a terrible example because unlike Azealia she pretty much stopped talking shit as soon as her comments got reported as "news".

"Misgynoir" is a great word, thanks for the vocab Azealia.

Her album is (still) brilliant.

That is all.

loving the new interview.

her avowed hatred for "fat white people" who "live on farms" and "work at k-mart" who may or my not be racist but have "racist grandmothers" reminded me of the ideology behind borat.

there's really nowhere to go with this line of thinking, but i think her quixotic devotion to "never compromising" constitutes, i think, a kind of integrity

no need to ever see her naked, really, just wanna listen to the music. 15 year old me may have felt differently.

two months pass...

Between the starring film role, Playboy cover, her (sorta?)good behavior, and slayage of her live performances, she seems to be having the last laugh. Iggy is battling yet another petition last I heard.

http://www.tmz.com/2015/09/22/azealia-banks-flight-homophobic-slur-delta-video/

Azealia Banks went insane on a flight from New York to LAX Monday night, calling the flight attendant a "f***ing f***ot" ... and it's all on video.
A passenger sitting next to Banks tells TMZ, when the Delta flight landed just before 1:00 AM Tuesday, Azealia made a beeline for the front door. She had been sitting in seat 6A but a French couple in the 3rd row was blocking her exit as they pulled their luggage from the overhead bin.
The eyewitness says Azealia tried to squeeze by the couple when the French man put his hand out. Azealia, we're told, went nuts. The eyewitness says she spit in the man's face, punched him in the face and clawed at his shirt.
At that point we're told the flight attendant grabbed Azealia's bag and told her to calm down. She lost her balance, fell to the seat, stood up and then a tug-of-war over the luggage ensued. This is where the video begins.
Azealia demands to take her bag and leave, and eventually calls the flight attendant a "f***ing f***ot" -- a homophobic slur.
We're told the co-pilot came out and told Azealia the police were called. She then ran off the plane, dropping her cell phone.
Police caught up with Azealia at baggage claim and spoke with witnesses as well, but the French couple decided not to press charges because they were here on holiday and didn't want the hassle.
Azealia claims the French man actually hit her in the face. She adds, "I don't tolerate bitchassness and I don't tolerate men putting their hands on me."
Azealia has a history with the the word "f***ot" -- she uses it frequently on social media -- and earlier this year she explained why she gets a pass, in her mind.

“LGBT community (GGGG) are like the gay white KKK’s,” the rapper wrote in a since-deleted tweet screen grabbed by Billboard. “Get some pink hoods and unicorns and rally down rodeo drive.”

xp Dude no. She's commenting about how the LGBT community is dominated by gay (white) men - hence GGGG rather than LGBT. The tweet is about inter-queer community dynamics and power relations involve race and gender within it.

the thing is that even though white gay men dominating the LGBT movement are largely terrible, azealia banks never gives the slightest impression that she's bothered about the struggle of any QPOC other than herself

so i am actually listening to broke w/expensive taste right now and this is kinda awesome!

i kinda forgot about the album amid all her twitter controversies

it's an odd mix of dance/hip hop

i don't really know who this is supposed to be for, but it's good

i wonder how it would have been received if she wasn't always being such a loon on social media?

like it has a certain quality that's not a million miles away from the shamir album

She's a perennial on the queer party circuit. I feel like "Heavy Metal & Reflective" is the song from BWET (other than "212") I hear out the most at this point.

Hey (Extended Mix), Saturday, 27 February 2016 00:33 (eight years ago) link

fyi just got home from a gay club where they played "212"

I really need to never look at her Twitter again. She really is a major artist and yet so much of the shit she types is just so noxious. Now she responds to KKK members showing up at a Trump rally with a "theory" of white racism that's actually a rehash of the pseudoscientific form racism actually took in the 19th century ("We as animals have natural, intrinsic tendencies to mate and socialize with people of our own racial group" - these are her words). I suppose Ice Cube circa Death Certificate was on a similar wavelength, but he didn't have a Twitter page. In the face of an actual white supremacist movement actually going mainstream through the stupefying magnetism of an overgrown schoolyard bully I can understand why people are apt to throw up everything they got, but it's still distressing to hear yet more ignorant bullshit in response from a talent who you'd think would know better.

Futuristic Bow Wow (thewufs), Sunday, 28 February 2016 06:30 (eight years ago) link

a talent who you'd think would know better

Genuine question: why would you think she'd know better? "She's young and black and a clever lyricist, therefore she can't possibly also be a stupid bigot"?
